Dang, that game's music is really nice! I'll have to check that out. Nice vid. Also pretty sweet idea with the external enclosure for the GEM.

Right?! - The Ar Tonelico series has one of the best OSTs imo. Glad ya liked the vid and thanks :3 The STL for the external enclosure was updated to have a shroud to protect the flex cable.

Man i love PS2 itself and the community around ps2 all the possibilities all the things you can do with it, all the emulators working on smartphones, steam deck like a charm. I saw 500$ handheld PS2 on some chinese website, all the mods like one you showed its crazy. This is exactly what i love in tinkering with many things, i cant keep stuff stock, i bought car 1 year later swapped for stronger engine, got steam deck and modded it and later i got oled and i gifted modded lcd version to my bro, found ps2 in my old stuff and modded it with HDMI, i also had "fun" with flipper zero, the worst thing is company or producers can do is to block this possibilities for people, let us have fun.

The PS2 is a favorite of mine too! If someone develops an FPGA version of the PS2 just like Analog did for the GBC and SNES, I'd so be get in line for that. Modding's a blast!

when you compare the Retrotink 5x pro to all of the HDMI mods that people spend a ton of money on for each console then the 5x Pro is a no brainer. It is much better, plug and play and guaranteed to save a few consoles every year. Total up the cost of HDMI mods of all the various consoles and you will see the difference.

The RetroTink 5x Pro is amazing no doubt. cost wise, yeah its advantage to not care about analog inputs with its various profiles are the jam. My thing is about preference since there're so many ways to go about playing on a modern TV or capture. every which way has their pros and cons and there's no one size fits all for everyone - worst con is the cost like ya said and there's no one size fits all for everyone. Pure digital solutions are my preference despite the cost so I can have no video quality loss due to signal conversions. One thing I'm looking at now is the ElectronAnalog HDMI mod that works with analog signals not caring about the source. Be dope to compare that to the Retro Gem and RetroTink. For a 20 dollar solution it's extremely attractive for any situation.

Lots of stutters and breaks in video and audio? Is that your capture setup? 12:26 you did mention stutter. Once playing the sound test in Ar Tonelico there were also multiple sound pops. Is this due to faulty install or is the mod hardware itself still a bit janky?

For capture, I have the elgato HD60. I have seen where playing live on TV vs a capture card came up with different results; in case of the HD64 by gamebox for the N64. It's great on TV, but didn't play nice at all with the Elgato; unplayable via capture. going back to the vid though, yup I hear that same jitters and ran again on the capture as well as my tv. jitters are irregular like the vid from the capture, but jitter-free when straight to the TV. I'll easily say that my HD60 capture card is the one at fault, and not the mod itself. I wouldn't mind opening the box and reflow my connections to the soundchip and sides to the main block just to eliminate those in case my welds outside the color channels are bad. Def worth a solid follow up!

@@PedroPlatinumGaming I was also wondering if the deletion of the optic audio out was necessary. Is there a way to keep it with this mod?
@PedroPlatinumGaming
@PedroPlatinumGaming 8 ай бұрын
@@wolfgangpuff7030 unfortunately the HDMI out aspect was designed to replace the the optical out port in favor of the HDMI. The mounts the mod comes with are designed for that particular placement. With the default power supply SCHP-3900X series, I settled for externally housing before doing a power mod to internally house the output. that said, you can save the optical out port and relocate it to make use of it since its functionality isn't impacted. You could attempt to remove the analog out port and print custom mounting to install the HDMI port there as another line of thought. Otherwise, you'd have to get creative where you might be able to do the placement.

@@PedroPlatinumGaming well, there’s always an external audio extractor. I highly recommend the Orei HDA-912. Works extremely well only costs around $30.

I suppose so. That's pretty cool! While not something I will go for as I don't want external peripherals, I can see this for those who want to keep the optical out option for their audio set up 👌

Awesome question! It's something I'm not too familiar with, but here's what I've been able to find. Sorry if this is a bit of a read 😅 Most common mods are software ones where custom firmware is loaded to jailbreak the system to load up homebrew software to do a slew of things. Searching a while for hardware mods, I didn't see much in regards to hardware mods other than an instance of replacing the 16 blade fan with a 19 blade fan. There were a lot of questionable airflow mods like making holes in the chassis, but that ruins the vacuum design for air flow. I did run into a great video by RIP Felix that went through the history of the "Yellow Light of Death" which was something I didn't know about before, and I have a PS3 (not a bc one) as well so I learned a good bit there. Supposedly early PS3 models suffer from a manufacturing defect that causes the system to eventually fail which cannot essentially be fixed because of the dye for the GPU and how it was made. '06 - '08 models suffer from it while '09 models seem okay; and models from '10 and on aren't affected. That said, there seems to be a Frankenstein mod that an installer can do to replace the RSX 90nm GPU with a 65nm or 40nm one. Another interesting vid by Calyps0man who performed retrofitting the 40nm which replaces the Orbis mod that was developed by reverse engineering what sony did to replace the bad GPUs. I'd probably go about installing custom firmware on a later model to load custom software to play an ISO rather than a physical disk given eventual GPU failure of an older model or find an installer that offers a Frankenstein service to replace GPUs. I couldn't find much else on hardware mods currently available. Hope this helps!

There is ofc getting a slim PS3 that isn't bc and get a PS2, but wasn't sure if that'd be an option you'd want to explore so you can play any discs you have for either PS1-3.

IDK if you said this in the video or not but, did you use lead free solder?
@PedroPlatinumGaming

No, I did not say, but I only use lead free solder.
@HarukaMorishima
@HarukaMorishima 8 ай бұрын
Was it harder to use compared to leaded solder or about the same?
@PedroPlatinumGaming
@PedroPlatinumGaming 8 ай бұрын
I can't say for sure since I can't remember the last time I used; maybe highschool lol Lead is toxic which is primarily why I avoid it. I don't generally have an issue using it as long as I maintain good temps. From what I've read it's easier to work with leaded solder because of the lower melting temp, better flow, see with the sheen, and easier to weld with old solder. Lead free solder has increased durability, due to higher melting temps, but harder to use and weld with older solder so you'd more than likely need to use more flux compared to when using leaded.
@HarukaMorishima
@HarukaMorishima 8 ай бұрын
The reason I'm asking is because we're supposed to use lead free solder for this install since that's what the PS2 uses but modders like ModvilleUSA used leaded solder while Macho Nacho used lead free. I'm doing research and getting people's opinions before I do my install. Thank you for your time and replies.
@PedroPlatinumGaming

You're welcome. it's always good to do that kind of research. if ya do end up using leaded solder, then def make sure the area is well ventilated and have a mask so you don't breathe in the fumes.

Also all old tech and software like bios, iso (and other) files and even older systems should be legally free to obtain/download

I believe that there should be a statue limit to allow such a thing legally happen like 5 - 10 years after a platforms end of support when it comes to games since publishers would have reaped what they could and stopped distribution. Sure there's the digital market, but that's another world since you pay for a license to pay for that can be revoked any time without notice and have "indefinite" life span. However, it'd be harder for hardware and other software since a lot of code gets reused during a products lifespan regardless of version so I don't think that would necessarily happen. It's nice that reverse engineering is a thing that is protected for such things to allow preservation. so much cool stuff would otherwise be lost to time. Good convo topics for sure!

Hey, i am willing to PAY someone pretty well to let me ship my PS2 to them with a retro gem, and they can install it for me and ship it back. I love the PS2 so much, but i am so technologically inept I know I will mess up the installation process. If anyone reading this comment is interested lmk. Thank you :)
