Part 2 of my series where we look at the PS2 and if it really is the ultimate SEGA console. Today we look at the Dreamcast and how many DC games made their way to SONY’s console. Be sure to check out part 1.

Quake 3 Arena on the Dreamcast was in fact the ACTUAL first cross-play game being compatible with the PC release. The PC Client had to download the simplified Dreamcast maps but otherwise was a true cross-play experience.

Yep, I remember my friends jumping onto DC servers and expecting an easy time only to realise that the DC gamers had keyboards and mice 😂😂😂

I always wanted 18 wheeler American pro trucker on my Dreamcast back in the day and recently I got an RG 353V and finally got to play it and realized… I wasn’t really missing much ..

Yeah it certainly isn’t the best game ever. 30 minutes of arcade fun.

18 wheel trucker is really fun with the racing wheel. I play it all the time.

@@robert5235 I hear ya, but if I'm going to use a racing wheel, I'm going to be playing something like Gran Turismo or Assetto Corsa... wish I had a PC so I could play all the high-end Sim racing games... that's what I've always been good at.. like really good.. beat everybody in the lobby and my first online race on a track. I've never even been on type good for everything on console... (or at least what happened in both project cars, one and project cars two, the very first time I played it in an online race race)

Rez coming so late in the Dreamcasts life ended up with a simultaneous development cycle. There is one major difference though, the Ps2 does run at twice the frame rate as the DC. Understandable as it was an ambitious title in some ways. But it does have a complete lack of de-flicker so the presentation can be a little rough. The video output of Dreamcast was just brilliant, definitely the best of the generation.

Yes I think both that and Space Channel 5 are fantastic conversions. I think many of the DC game conversions were a little rushed

I think Shenmue 1/2 could have been done on the Ps2. Of course it would have taken time and effort but even downgrading the textures is some places there is nothing in Shenmue that could not be handled by the Ps2. The US Ps2 version of Grandia 2 is bugged to hell, it was my first experience with a console game actually crashing on me during a boss fight, textures magically dissapearing, huge slowdowns in some towns, light sources barely working. I just can imagine the game testers reporting all this bugs back to the developing team: - Hey!, there are missing textures, filckering textures there and there, big slowdowns in some parts, and the game randomly may chash, is that normal? - The director: No problem the Ps2 is so inferior, that is normal, let´s just ship the game as there is nothing we can do to fix it. But they actually kind of "fixed it" or better said "improve it" for the japanese and european release as those versions have less slowdown, no flickering textures and hopefully no game crashing bugs. So if you really want to play the Ps2 version of Grandia 2 i recommend playing the european or japanese versions.

100% I agree with you on Shenmue, it may not have been identical but they got Resident Evil 4 on the PS2. They certainly could have got Shenmue. I think the exclusivity deal and the raw power of the original XBOX was preferable. Yu Suzuki was always about being cutting edge. Interesting about Grandia, I played the European version. I hate to think how bad the US version was!
@jsr7343 ай бұрын
@@thegamelounge659 It was really bad. It left a bad impression on me that i swear to not buy any other Grandia game that came after. So when i saw they released "Grandia Xtreme" i said, "no thank you". Is a shame, because i actually liked the game and managed to finished it, but the whole bunck of technicall problems made it harder to enjoy, then i played the Dreamcast version and saw how the game was actually supposed to look. 😀

I see Grandia III also came out on PS2. Reviews are not great so I have steered clear so far

Excellent topic, It's also possible that the PS2 could be considered not only a great console for SEGA fans, even though it stills sound strange to me, but it has a ton of arcade/older console games in the form of compilations and collections, many being Japan exclusives, such as the NeoGeo Online Collection, while some were made available outside of Japan, many remained exclusives there, ADK Collection, Darkstalkers Collection, the many Midway, Namco, Capcom, Psikyo compilations and more. PCSX2 has a widescreen option, which adjusts most games to the now standard 16:9 widescreen. I'm saying this because there are a few games shown in this video that are stretched, Ferrari, Virtua Tennis, being examples.
@thegamelounge6592 ай бұрын
Hey Roberto, as always great info. I know about the SEGA collections in Japan but didn’t know about the others. Need to look these up. Super interesting you mentioned PCSX2, both of these games were running with the widescreen hack. Not sure if I configured it correctly. As some PS2 games have native WS support. So generally like to turn it off and enable it in the game menu if I can.
@roberto15192 ай бұрын
That's true, I think Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness is one of those games which require the BIOS set to 16:9 as there's no in-game option for that, I think. Still, I know POCSX2 doesn't have widescreen codes for every game, but it does have for a lot of them. Yes, the PS2 is a classics collection monster as well, you could probably make a few more videos about those in the future.
@thegamelounge6592 ай бұрын
Yes great idea, there is still part 3 of this video but will certainly look at other collections in the future. I need to look these other collections up for sure

So not knowing much about these two consoles, having not seen a good enough reason to buy either one of them, i have one question... Is the Dreamcast actually more capable than the PS2??
@thegamelounge6593 ай бұрын
So the PS2 is certainly more powerful. I doubt games like God Of War 2 and San Andreas would have been possible on Dreamcast. That bringing said the DC had better cleaner video output and was a really easy to program for console. The PS2 architecture was notoriously difficult to program for.
@CaseTheCorvetteMan3 ай бұрын
@@thegamelounge659 thanks mate, i have both but i've never put more than a few hours into either one before i'd return to my Saturn or Mega Drive or the NEO•GEO, games just got too far from the quick fun they used to be.

Dreamcast was easy to program so at the start of the PS2's life games actually looked worse than dreamcast's despite Sony's marketing claims to the contrary. But later life PS2 games actually do look superior.

@@ruxcooking thanks mate, sure does seem the PS2 looks quite a bit more powerful on paper, but that certainly doesn't always mean much either.

I really hate the Dreamcast was the last console we ever seen from Sega!!! Some of my most beloved and favorite games of all time, came out on the Dreamcast! Shenmue one of my most favorite and memorable games of all time! I liked Metropolis Street racer way better than any project Gotham game that has came afterwards?! it seems like the car models got worse the newer games and in metropolis street racer the physics for the cars felt better and maybe this is because the fastest car was the R34 skyline? I don’t know? I know Metropolis racer was one of my favorite racing games and I completed everything in it! I struggled playing a Gotham game because I get bored rather quickly…
@thegamelounge6593 ай бұрын
Yes sad times indeed. I totally agree on MSR, actually PGR3 is the game that manages to capture some of the magic for me. PGR 1&2 just didn’t do it. And yes Shenmue was incredible. Ok controls haven’t aged well but the game itself is still fantastic. Consider the Japanese version released in 1998!!!
