Last fall, I made the mistake of switching our Language Arts program from Abeka to a different company. It was nothing short of a disaster and I ran back to Abeka. I'm going over the top 5 reasons why I'll be sticking with them for both of my kids at least through 8th grade.

This was exactly the encouragement that I needed! My husband and I decided (last night!) to yank our 11 yr old son out of public school and enroll him in homeschooling, and Abeka Academy is fitting the bill to a T! Subscribing and following like a shadow now!

So you "loved" Master Books in April 30th of 2019, and by June 2020 you love Abeka. ??? Folks, what works for one family may not work for yours. In the end, most home school curriculum will give your child a good education compared to any public school.

Thanks for posting this! We have had a wild ride for my first and I’m trying to smooth things out. Basically we did Abeka for language arts and math in kinder. (I hated the math because it went way too slow for my son). But he hated the workbook and drilling for reading. I learned a TON from teaching him but at the end of kinder he hated school (I think it was his personality because second son has been total opposite). So first grade we ditched Abeka and I just kind of filled in blanks and taught stuff I printed from Teachers Pay Teachers, and we just read a ton. Well now he’s in second grade and I’m realizing that I really need to fill in some blanks and soooo I’m looking back at Abeka again because I know it’s what he and I need. Structure, practice, a plan…Abeka is just amazingly well rounded. I think I’m just trying to figure out homeschooling since I’m still in the early years and trying to figure out my kids learning types. For my second son, I’ll definitely be buying Abeka again for first grade. (We also love Charlotte mason over here so it’s a blend of total opposite teaching styles 😂).

So funny!! I found out about Master Books through you and tried it last year. We absolutely love the science ,history and social studies from master books but I am definitely coming back to Abeka for all math ,language arts/ writing etc. We definitely lost a good year of progress in math and language/writing/penmanship this last year. It’s ok though! I’m glad we tried it. I just think it is so funny that I’m just going back to Abeka and I just happened upon this page to see you are too! 😆 We just want to get to the point and learn what we need to learn in math and writing. It’s easier for me to follow Abekas directions. Thank you for your videos

Agree, TOTALLY. We are first year homeschoolers and decided to give MB a try.....it was very Bible based, which we loved! We used History, Social Studies & Science from them..... absolutely well done. However, when we did the Math and Language Arts, they were almost "rushed" in their development. We found many spelling errors in both the Math and Language Arts books, speckled throughout the 3&4th levels. Both of the subjects also felt very disjointed. I mean, my son was the one catching concepts that were never taught, which were under the "review" sections. 🤦 It seemed it were a publishers mistake .....almost like the material was put out pretty quickly at once without detailed editing? Idk. My husband gave the same review to me, after helping our son with Math. I disliked the spelling words section waiting until Day 5 before its introduction. We purchased MB for the Godly focus, which we so appreciated, and the seemingly "all in one" and "grab and go" layouts. I personally loved the colorful syllabus and grading sheets in the front too! Thinking the Charlotte Mason flare would be fun and helpful, we ended up skipping the stories because the kids were getting bored and wanted to get right into things. We don't see our kids have learned anything obviously new that they can really recall or apply to their writings. We are looking at Abeka and IEW now. Thanks for your honest review, very helpful!!

We did some of the other curriculum you mentioned and ended up at Abeka too. My daughter and I both like the “get to the point” type of style. It’s perfect for us! We are also excited to use MFW for history this year and apologia in the next few years when everyone is just a bit older. Its funny to see someone using the same curriculum for the same subjects 😊. You mentioned your only about half way through the curriculum since you started mid-year. I’m in the same boat...we’re on lesson 130 of my 2nd grade LA but my daughter will be in 3rd grade in the fall. I want to hurry and finish so she can be on track but I don’t want to rush and miss stuff. Do you plan on “catching up” gradually over time with your boys?

For the most part it seems like A beka is no different than using the same ole textbook-style they have in school. My thirteen year old son LOVES reading "living books". They are much more interesting, and he learns the material on a much deeper level. This is especially true for history. I can't really vouch for any other subjects though because I haven't used A beka for anything other than history and science. My son did really like their science. I also like to cater my son's curricula specifically for him. I can't do this with full grade kits. Also A Beka is expensive!

I did the same thing when my daughter went into the 7th grade. She did Abeka 4th-6th and did SO well, but I knew the format was changing for 7th. So, we switched to a mixed bag at the beginning of 7th and ended up ditching most of it and went right back to Abeka 😂 now that she is in 8th grade, we find it oppressive, BUT, we may just stick with it all the way through and deal with it. It’s what we are both familiar with, and it works, although it has gotten more intense. We have definitely left Abeka for math, though.
@kkelling9584
@kkelling9584 3 жыл бұрын
Reality is 7/8th grade makes many kids cry no matter the curriculum, homeschool, public school whatever…it’s high stress switching from elementary to high school level and PLUS puberty/hormones, etc, frontal lobe development going on, and starting finals/mid-terms whatever else, the intensity increases plus math switches from concrete to abstract with algebra and writing gets much more intense….sooooo I think the tears are unavoidable for some kids if you are at least trying to get to college one day, but it gets better when the hormones settle down and they get more used to the load and stamina increases 11th grade, hopefully.
@stephaniestone4737
@stephaniestone4737 3 жыл бұрын
@@kkelling9584 No, I am not steering mine towards college. I am steering mine into something that would require going to a two year technical school, so she doesn’t have to study the same information for the first two years of it that she has had crammed down her throat for the past 10 years, just so she can start her adulthood out shackled in debt and end up getting a job that can pay as well as something from a two year technical school. We just started the second half of 8th grade, since sticking with 7th grade Abeka messed everything up and put her behind half a grade level from all of the stress, drama, and burnout. I switched her to Masterbooks history 8th grade for the second half of the grade level, and she absolutely loves it. It is so much easier for her. There is a significant amount of pressure that is gone from our day and evenings 🙌🏻 I also found the winning ticket for her with math, and that is teaching textbooks. No more workbook work, that is drudge work that did not captivate her at all. She completed an entire math grade level in 2.5 months. I disagree with what you said about it is like this for all middle school curriculum, because it definitely has not been our experience at all since branching out and moving on from a curriculum that became very much a ball and chain. She will finish out the grade level with Abeka in Bible, Science, and most of their language arts course, but the more we branch out and find other curriculum, the better things have gotten for her and therefore for our whole family. I ditched Abeka literature and decided to just have her reading a novel of my choosing. I purchased the “teacher” (supplementary) book that goes with the novel(s). This is the equivalent of how Abeka assigns book reports, in addition to their 8-10 hours of the rest of their daily workload. It is working out beautifully so far. She is learning more this way, because she takes the time to look up words she doesn’t know. There was no time for that when she was doing all of the rest of their curriculum. Learning does not have to be drudge work and misery. She was bored to tears watching 45 minute long videos for each subject that are not interactive for her and doing anywhere from an hour to two hours of prep work before she watched them. That has a lot to do with why I don’t plan on funneling her into a college, just so she can spend the first two years of that having to take the same things she had to do in homeschool all over again. I want her to do something that is achievable in a couple of years that fits her personality. That’s just my opinion though, of course. I think college is pretty much a scam. Most jobs do not require a “college” education- they require specific skills and information about said career along with apprenticeship. Of course there are sophisticated careers that do require college, but most careers require skills that can be taught in a couple of years with some apprenticeship. We have some curriculum already for 9th grade. We chose to go with the Good & The Beautiful for Language Arts. Hopefully that will be a good fit for her. Math is for sure Teaching Textbooks. I am undecided on History and Science, still. It won’t be Masterbooks for history, based on the content of what is in the 9th grade books (based on reviews), which is too bad, because we love their gentle approach. I am off of my soapbox, and I have left the Abeka cult 👍

I am starting my 5 and 6 year old in k 5 and my preschooler in k4 abeka academy this month. I just got so burnt out trying to teach so many kids and having a 2 and almost 1 year old. I don't think my older ones could jump into abeka so I will just keep working with them. I think that this is going to be so helpful. If it works for my kids , I will keep them in the abeka academy until 12th grade.

I made a mistake in plane geometry in 11th grade. I have adhd and aspergers, so I sometimes lack common sense. During it, I gave my grades for her at once when I finish it all. She told me they wanted me to send them the tests, bit she could grade it. I assumed.that meant she graded it but they just wanted to look at it. However, today I realized that my grades where lower than what I texted her, and I finally realized that that was not the case. In my first year of abeka, since I was held back, I decided to Catch up and do it everyday to graduate on time. I was a a and occasionally b, but my first year there due to stress I got three b plus. I am going slow now, and am doing better, but I got rejected from my dream college. I am disappointed but have learned a lesson.

I've been looking to switch my kids to homeschool this year and my friend recommended Abeka. He used it years ago for his kids and also graduated from there. My issue is, I'm a single dad of 3 and can't be home for a bigger part of the day. I'm looking to set up a schedule with my kids focusing more on the videos and light work while I'm at work. When I get home, I'll have the opportunity to work with them through the evenings and on weekends. Figured I'd see what your thoughts may be on it. I know Abeka can be a little more demanding at times than some of these other online schools but it seems it's much more structured and the lessons are set up better for parents. Thoughts?

Benjamin Phillips I would say it depends on the age and maturity of the child. My 8th graded works pretty independently. I give him the assignments and he’s off on his own (and checks his own work). My 4th grader needs a little instruction and then he goes off on his own. Another alternative would be IEW streaming. They can do language arts via their steaming service on their own (depending on the age of course).

I love Gods design for life beginners for my soon to be second grader, we’ll be using the heaven and earth for beginners as soon as it comes out (in a few weeks). I like that it focuses on one area of science and simplifies it so beautifully in bite size chunks at this age. We are using Abeka for Language Arts. It depends on your child, my son loves science topics so Abeka goes through several different sciences and he prefers the God’s design book.

We have a 3 year-old, so I've been researching curricula like crazy to try to decide now what we may want to start with for Pre-K and K in the next few years. I was wary of Abeka at first because it seemed so much like regular school and lots of workbooks, but so many families seem to have great academic success with Abeka. I've appreciated your videos, and it was great to hear your confidence in Abeka's phonics/reading/language arts. I'm fairly new to your channel, but it sounds like your kids did their first few years of schooling primarily with Abeka. Was that Pre-K, K and 1st (or did you start homeschooling later in their school years)?
