Plein air oil painting the landscape in Cornwall, on a cold and very windy morning near Godolphin Hill.
I chose a barren landscape as my subject for this outdoor (en plein air) painting in oils. I love the emptiness of these landscapes - however, it proved difficult to paint in the conditions!
All good fun (and practice) though!

A great painting produced despite the very challenging conditions. I love your dedication to get out painting whatever the weather! I’m afraid I wasn’t tempted. Walking the dog was enough for me! Mind you I don’t think my lightweight pochade would have coped very well. Your Jullian easel is obviously more suited to adverse conditions. It definitely held up to all the buffeting wind. Look forward to your next video. Hopefully it will be more springlike for a change 🤞

I loved this painting, from the moment you put that wonderful hedge colour mix (which I wanna try mixing) pinky brown on, and it just got better and better from there. That's a darn good pochade easel, to stay standing in that, and you did good yourself, to not give up too early. Personally, I loved the sounds of the wind on the video, and thought this one had a lovely atmosphere, as well as a super painting and a hardy painter!

Full marks for braving Storm Kathleen - even over the east side fo the country we have been buffeted - I have lost to branches of a tree peony with his buds! There are occasions when artist skill makes up for the weather conditions and a harmonious composition has resulted. The restrained colours work well and the textures of the paint reflect the 'fabric' of the harvested field. I remember being surprised when I started painting years ago - when going outside you thought clouds were a uniform grey, tree trunks brown, leaves green and walls of churches or houses the red of brick or boring grey of stone. After a few hours and with later trips, I suddenly began to see that grey was not just grey - I began to see yellows, oranges, violets, reds and blues in what i had thought of as uniform skies. Lichen on walls can be yellow, green pink ... I suspect I was learning to observe more carefully but i wonder if optical responses were beginning to work. You begin to see the complementary colour - those opposite on the side of the colour wheel. It is a fascinating interaction, at first side the field is brown, straw and green and in the painting one can sense violet, pinks and reds even if the palette seems to be restricted and the colours muted! Interesting!

Man you're a real soldier. I won't get out of bed if its too cold. I live in Tucson Arizona and cold for me is probably different than cold for you. I get out as much as I can however. Soon I'll only be able to paint either real early, like 5am or late day around 7pm. The heat in summer is dangerously high.

The wind was an asset, blowing you hand creating loose natural marks. You fought it too much. Instead of embracing it. The cold is the biggest challenge though, brrrr...at least no rain. Well done persevering. Nice colour harmony. 👍
