GENIUS Mikhail Pletnev gives us insight into the soul of the musician who produces the relationship the sounds that show the relationship between nature and the musician in these biography videos. The hard work and hours of practice that go into this calibre of musician always astound me! Giving a concert must be like working in a paper mill for a day!

Natalya Hennings 6 years ago 0:17 Pletnev: "In general, I don't contemplate much. The one who does usually have wrinkles, headaches, signs of aging like boldness etc. No, one needs to stop it- It's useless". 0:36 Pletnev plays the First Piano Concerto by Beethoven, rehearsal in Montre, Canada, 2006. Pletnev: "Indeed, I think that talents like Tchaikovsky and Beethoven could not possibly not understand their destination, their purpose. Only that can explain the fact, that when Beethoven was creating his Heiligenstadt Testament, and he wanted to end his life, he actually never committed that act even knowing what he would expect in the end." 1:47 Pletnev plays the Third Piano Concerto in the same year at the same place. 2:18 " A bit about Chopin" The host:" And did Chopin had similar situation?" Pletnev responds: " You see, Chopin was an ill man. Imagine, in the early age he was diagnosed with TB, the lung form which eventually put him in the grave. Majorca, persistent cough. Imagine, that one goes to Majorca with the one's family, and the whole population of Majorca are avoiding him as the source of "plague" with the utter sheer fear. Chopin was only 28 years old, when he coughed out the blood." 3:14 Pletnev plays Chopin Prelude in D minor. He says: " In Majorca, Chopin began abstracting to the world of the dead, another world. I was in Majorca, in his small, humid room (monastery abode) with heavy arches over the head." 3:45 Here is the video of that room. Pletnev continues: "When his family came back he was sitting at the grand piano. Chopin said to them: " As I thought, you all had died!" When he was writing these Preludes, he was getting physically ready to be there in heaven, after-death world. That's why this composition is not only romantic, but a tragic one." 5:21 The host: " But then Chopin had overcome that, right? ". Pletnev disagrees with the host:"To overcome, that was just impossible! The pain was always with Chopin, deep down. The time of the great Polonaises and merry dances had gone, all of that was left behind long time ago, back in his youth". 5:43 Chopin, Waltz in D minor, Moscow, 2006. 6:55 "the Wheel". Pletnev: " I look at everything from the point of a wheel which is going to run over something. It's like: Where have I gotten to? The dirt, the clay?!" the host:" Then, push on the brake!" Pletnev:"I couldn't and can't brake, the wheel goes to where it was turned to. I feel like a different force has been turning me. The "wheel" itself cannot turn even if it wants to. Probably, something is predetermined". 7:34 Pletnev's mother: "No, no! It is not he, who succumbs to his fate, but it is his fate." Pletnev believes that the wheel of fortune just has been wheeling him through the life. He thinks that it's not worth of effort to fight the fate, the destiny. He quotes the Native American proverb "The one does not commit a sin who follows his nature". Then he smiles and says: " But one needs to figure out his nature first!". 8:39 Again, Pletnev plays the Fifth Concerto by Beethoven. 10:16 Fragment from the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1978. He was receiving the 1st prize. Prior to that he gave an interview on TV. The young Michail Pletnev talked about his teacher at the Moscow Music Conservatory Yakov Vladimirovitch Flier with admiration and appreciation. Pletnev was the 4th year student at that time. 10:49The video shows the classroom of Pletnev's teacher Yakov V. Flier, who was a legendary pianist and revered teacher at the Moscow Conservatory. Pletnev's mother has been especially honored by being around him and witnessing him. 11:06 Documentary video fragment of Yakov Flier playing piano. Pletnev's mother kept this cutting from a newspaper, the portrait of Yakov Flier during all her life, then later she gave it to her son when he became a Laureate of the competition. 12:07 Young Pletnev during his speech after the competition: " At the last lesson with Yakov Flier, Y. Flier took out a very old music manuscript, which was written and binded by some antique book dealer. It turned out to be the Spanish Fantasia by F. Liszt. I looked inside and saw the music of incredible difficulty. Flier said dreamily that he used to play the piece with the great success in the past. Then he looked at me, and said:" Wouldn't it be nice if you try to play this "little piece"?" 12:40 Young Pletnev plays the Spanish Fantasia by Liszt. 13:45 Pletnev's mother says: " At the last round of the Tchaikovsky competition, Misha needed a tuxedo. So, we tried to find one, or order one, but Flier gave his old taxedo to Pletnev. It is Interesting that Misha looked very comfortable in this old tuxedo, as if he was wearing it all his life". 14:06 "At 10:15, number #38". These were the time slot and the number assigned to the young Pletnev for the Tchaikovsky competition. These are flashbacks. 14:20 The young Pletnev plays the last round of the competition. He plays the 1st Piano Concerto with an orchestra by Tchaikovsky in Moscow, 1978. 15:14 Pletnev's mother says:"It is interesting that during that Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, someone from Kazakhstan asked Misha (Michail Pletnev) to correct the score for Eugene Onegin, and he did that, and he also played soccer. To Misha the music always came so natural like would breathing. 16:00 Video of the festive Moscow, the Red Square, the Kremlin, then the end of his performance, ovations, flowers, the triumph.
