Watch me use ChatGPT for the very first time to plot a new urban fantasy novel. Will it do the job?

You can lead ChatGPT to develop better stuff by telling it to do more specific stuff, like telling it to base a story on a certain plot, or make it follow the story circle.

Thank you! I'll give that a try.

The extent I’ve used it is to help with some sentence structure, edit an already written novella, and to suggest some descriptive language (because I’m bad at describing). I have also used it to help generate ideas if I’m stuck on a scene or in a certain act. I’m notorious for getting stuck in the second act. I know how to start a story and how to finish a story, however my middles tend to be a little lackluster. It has helped me to come up with ideas to keep the story going and build toward the conclusion I want

Excellent! It seems like the more one plays around with the software, the more uses one finds for it. It's a really useful tool.

I agree. I like to brainstorm with other writers, and if they're not available, ChatGPT will give me ideas. It's a good tool for writing a blurb and it will find and correct typos. You may have to ask your students to write their papers by hand. 🙂

Ooh, I didn't know it could be used for proofing. Thank you! Yeah, the whole department switched to an in-classroom writing model this year. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. 🤷‍♂️

Great video and conclusion. It's a useful tool to brainstorm ideas or if you're stuck at a particular point in your story and need a new perspective. Beyond that, it's pretty useless and gimmicky. That being said, I'm calling it now: in a few years we're going to start seeing lawsuits for plagiarism. People will use these tools to write novels and movies and unknowingly end up copying what someone else already wrote. It's going to be fun (kinda!) to see that unravel.

Exactly. That's one of many reasons why I'm recommending caution in using it as a writing tool. Same reason an intelligent fitness fanatic wouldn't replace his whole diet with steroids and supplements: No additive can eliminate the need for fundamentals.

I use ChatGBT mostly for worldbuilding brainstorming. But you missed something about it, one can tell ChatGBT to emulate writing styles and when doing so it might be capable to produce better prose.

I'll try that. Thanks!

The AI can definitely do a lot of the easier/time consuming stuff for you a lot of the time, which is really nice cause even if you aren't using it to plot out your story, you can use it to get some inspiration for what you want to be doing. Also a great tool for resourceful students to bypass all the annoying busywork that comes with highschool. Bit sad this thing came around after I finished lmao. I doubt my ego will let me use this to skip much writing-related stuff in college, especially since I'm majoring in Creative Writing, but who knows, maybe I'll have to pretend to analyze shakespeare again one of these days🤣

It's got limited value, that's for sure. And there's already technology out there to catch if something's been written by AI. Publishers, writing contests, and educational institutions are actively using that software to prevent plagiarism. And yeah... my ego wouldn't let me put my name on something a computer wrote.
