I linked up the 7 separate videos and fixed the aspect ratio.

I think this is the fourth time I've listened to a variation of this lecture, but it's still enlightening every time.

I think he said "Donaldson" which I think refers to Stephen Donaldson. For the general record, Tolkien is the philosophical Tolkien. The fact that a lot of people read his work without realizing that it is full of philosophy is both a testament to his skill and a statement on the capacity of the average reader. I would hazard to say that Tolkien has more philosophical depth than any other fantasy author and any other fiction author of the 20th century, with the possible exception of C.S. Lewis.

I was going to state exactly this. I agree with almost everything you said - i diverge from you on C.S. Lewis (his 'philosophy' is too overt for my sensibilities, but then I've only read his Narnia books). Tolkein is great in so many ways. Your phrase 'Tolkein _is_ the philosophical Tolkein' is superb. Donaldson's stuff is good, but rather than 'philosophical Tolkein', he's more a modern deconstructed version of Tolkein.

It's funny how Brandon doesn't want to be known for what he _is_ known for; and what he considers the most important part of a novel, chatacterisation, is arguably the weakest part of his writing. I really enjoy his books, but mostly for the plot and the world building, not his characters or his prose. He doesn't seem to create the memorable characters of a Rothfuss or an Abercrombie. Maybe he's just too nice, and his niceness permeates all his characters making them seem a little two dimensional? I don't know. Regardless, i will always read his novels and listen to his lectures (especially on world building and story construction). He is a good storyteller and a fantastic teacher.
