Hello! In today's episode, we will talk about soil mulching. You will also learn about the benefits of this type of cultivation, as well as what machines can be used for it. Mulching is a technique applied in agriculture, which consists in covering the soil surface with a variety of materials to optimize its properties. It brings numerous benefits to both plants and the entire ecosystem. This technique is becoming increasingly popular in agricultural practice, and its effectiveness has been repeatedly confirmed by research. The main advantage of mulching is to protect the soil from adverse environmental conditions. The mulch layer acts as a shield, protecting the soil from excessive drying out in hot weather and from erosion, which can result from the impact of raindrops. This ensures that water from rainfall is retained in the soil, rather than running off the surface, which minimises the risk of nutrient loss. The mulching process has a direct impact on the quality of the cultivated soil, regulates the quantity and quality of micro-organisms in the soil, as well as maintaining the biological balance of microorganisms. The main purpose of this practice is to protect the soil from negative external factors and improving its structure and fertility. One of the benefits of mulching is the reduction of water evaporation from the soil surface. The mulch layer acts as a barrier, that keeps moisture in the soil, contributing to more efficient management of water resources. This is particularly important during dry and hot periods, when the plants' need for water is greatest. Another important advantage of mulching is the reduction of weed growth. Thanks to the fact that the mulch layer restricts the access of light to the soil, it inhibits the germination and growth of weeds, which in turn reduces competition for crop resources and nutrients. As a result, farmers can decrease the amount of chemicals used to control weeds, which translates into a lower environmental burden and lower production costs. In addition, mulching contributes to protecting the soil against erosion. The mulch layer acts as a shield, which protects the soil from the effects of rain or wind preventing its degradation. Thanks to the fact that even during heavy rainfall or strong winds, soil structure remains intact, and nutrients remain in place. The effect of mulching on improving soil structure must not be overlooked, too. Organic materials used for mulching, such as straw or cut plants, provide valuable nutrients to the ground. In addition, under the influence of biological processes taking place in a layer of mulch, the activation of micro-organisms occurs, which contributes to further improvement of soil structure and its fertility. Mulching is becoming an increasingly valued practice in sustainable agriculture. It allows not only to improve productivity of soil and crop quality, but also to reduce the negative impact of agricultural activity on the natural environment. Therefore, in an increasing number of farms around the world, mulching becomes an integral part of the sustainable management strategy of land resources. In practice, mulching is often carried out using special agricultural machinery. One of the popular manufacturers of such equipment is Rolmako, which offers mulch harrows, knife rollers and disc harrows for ultra-shallow cultivation. Let's focus on mulch harrows, which are equipped with double working tines of appropriate thickness and length placed on solid pipes. The elements are hydraulically adjustable, which makes it possible to adjust the angle of their work to the needs of a specific task.
