Mill Brook Railroad

Жыл бұрын

This storm was a lot of work to clean up after. It downed trees and power lines, closed roads and plunged more than half of Vermont into darkness. Meanwhile, there's work to do to get ahead of the freeze coming after the storm that will turn all this snow into cement like ice.
Will we get the railroad open so we can bring in more wood pellets? Watch to the end and find out.

You're probably tired of my suggestions by now,, but,, if you extend the nose piece of the the plow out forward,, and change the current 120* angle to a 65* angle,,, you will notice less resistance when cutting through the wet snow...

adjustable angle hitch mount plow coming soon? like with center hinge point and extra beefy brace bars interchangeable to resist the squeezing by left and right of the pusher? can work out your angles later just by different lengths of interchangeable pipe idk what benefits putting a 50lb spring say from a full suspension bicycle shock in the angle holer bar would be but i assume letting the hinge flex 💪 a bit when ramming snow could yeild effecincy benefits or none at all

I've had good luck with Pam cooking spray or silicone spray on my plow on my lawn tractor to help keep the snow moving off the blade it may work on the high gloss part of your plow, I saw a working model of a Union Pacific rotary plow but it was Brigs and Stratton instead of steam, threw the snow 20 feet, the engine pushing it though was a 7.25 gauge steam 4 cylinder Shay the plow had 100 pounds of lead on it and the Shay had 200 pounds of lead for ballast, he used bungi straps to hold his knees together so he could ride, nothing stopped it but the remote.

Hello Aaron: nice job cleaning the rails off from that wet snow. the shady pines plow does work well for the first pass, then your plow widens it so that the snow does not fall back on the tracks. the derailments were due to ice on the inside of the rails popping the wheels off. wet snow is the worse, it takes out trees and power lines like crazy. hope you have power again and are toasty warm. especially if you are on well, that makes it really a challenge! barry

@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
A rotary snow plow is the ancestor to the modern snow blower. You don't want to force them through snow, or they'll break the blades. You want to go slow and let the rotary eat the snow at its own pace. Modern snow blowers are faster, but they still need you to go slow enough for them to eat the snow. Push them too hard, and you start breaking things.

For the first plow that you used if you use something like that of what would look like a knife but not Sharp, good with working with the wet snow because it sticks together it becomes one big thing then the blade would make it easier for the plow to actually split the snow down the middle and be moved to the sides

Nice to have an extra battery for emergencies. I’m a weird sort. I love trains, but I could never think of having one that size unless it was to be put to work. I love the idea of being able to run a spur into a wooded area, load up flats and gondolas with firewood, and haul them back to the wood shed. At least the wife wouldn’t be able to complain about “that ridiculous train” in the back yard! Get a small generator to use for charging your batteries. I used my 1200 watt teeny guy to charge batteries with a charger set to ten amps to get some juice to heavy equipment that was parked a fair distance from the shop power. I also had the plan in mind that the tiny generator could charge several batteries that were all connected up. These batteries would be hooked to two 3000 watt inverters for heavier house power. A small inverter would power sensitive electronics, because that’s what they are built for. Intermittent loads, like refrigerators and furnaces would draw quite a bit, but the cycle time allows the battery bank to charge up for the next run. I recommend at least 4 commercial batteries, or even marine batteries, for a reasonable power bank. You have half of the battle already won, with having batteries for not just trains, but emergencies. I’ll bet the wife did a rethink when you were able to take power from your “toys” to keep her warm! Much love for both you and her for surviving by the World’s Greatest Hobby!

I couldn't build a railroad of this size without having a practical purpose, either. Here's the reason the railroad gets plowed: home heating fuel. We burn wood pellets to keep our house warm. Every three weeks or so, we bring in a ton of wood pellets to the storage building (train WP-1), and then every five days, I'll run a small load of 200-lbs to our daughter's house so she can stay warm (train WP-2) . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJOBhc6gxtbRpXk.html We also haul chicken manure (symbol freight CSX-1) , firewood, maple sap, building materials, compost, and anything else that needs to be moved around the property.

It makes more sense to install a whole house battery backup and a solar panel array on the lawn.

It is true, I don't have the most powerful locomotives. They're the equivalent of 50 ton industrial switchers. Gas won't be any more powerful, but bigger will do better. The locomotives are only single motor 500W electrics. That's about 3/4 horsepower. As far as the track goes: It took five or six years to build the mainline to its longest, 1024 feet. Due to house construction, it is currently 970 feet.

Wow, six years to build all that track. I'm not at all surprised. You're better off buying some amusement park engines running on gasoline having stronger engines, like the red and orange Skychief diesel or green locomotive styles you see in most amusement parks. The diesel style is my favorite being more modern looking.

You should consider getting an Eco Flo Delta power system. I don’t represent them at all. We no longer can depend on government (they control the power monopoly). They have done nothing to improve the power grid and won’t. It is amazing that they haven’t come to get your wood stoves (environmental reasons). Just saying stay warm and safe. Oh and by the way thanks for sending all those “snow” videos. They remind me why I left that crap.

Wow 3 days ! Worst than me. Never more on and off than 6 hours. I´ve heard that you think renaming Mill Brook Railroad as Mill Brook gym & athlehics. Some lift weights in their training. Others.... Have you ever think of a wing extension that can be added to clear the middle betwen main and siding at Sugar House ? The new plow cleans the rails better butt with more drag on rails. With uneven track, may be lift up front, reduce wheel adhesion and increase derailment ? She never derailed at that switch. It´s undecision from her betwen straight or right. She choose in the middle. And watching at 1/4 speed, she plunged at a more protypical speed. Hollywood would like to have it inserted in a train wreck movie. 😉

definitely need more weight for tracktion maybe a load of sand with engine drive wheels underneath and since bigger hammers carry more momentum storing up more energy with less effort to work and yeah i would've used the 2nd plow for original snow cut because steeper angle then later 2nd pass of circuit with wings full speed ahead warp 5 captian. surely you've mounted a used snowblower to an engine car? or made one to match original spiral plow models dual chutes or whatever. the 90° plow works but I'd favor the 45° or 22.5° for heavier wet stuff also some angle iron mounted on the wings at such slidey adjustable 2 🔩 bolt angles for lifting the snow up to fall again farther from tracks even adding like wind downforce snow downforce traction as long as chassis and axels designed to handle 3x weight loads ... do appreciate the snow ❄️🌨️/train vids though, keep em coming-toot toot :)

more about the manufacturers than anything i prefer excessive redundancies in engineering rather than riding the thin limits of what's the least an project can survive on without immediately breaking although for some processes lightweight and simple is the way to go by heavy weight and simple is good too... complicated is good but more to break/fail / diagnose and yes strong or weak for that too as parameters for invention
@MillBrookRailroad

More weight would be too much for the traction motor, so active cooling will be the approach. I'm pushing the traction motors to the edge of their capabilities when I use one locomotive at a time to clear wet snow. For that reason, I'm working on an active cooling system for the traction motors.
