Plowing Snow on the Railroad at Night

After running the snow blower, it continued to snow, so I replaced the broken battery in the 71 and got to plowing with the coupler pocket plow. Then, as it got dark, it was time to push the banks back, so I coupled the 71 and the 70 together with the Russell plow and finished the job by the light of the headlight.

❤this video! Your 71 Engine got the job done! Congratulations! Amazing what ice does to those rails. Second run nice to see 71 pushing snow plow along. Glad you didn’t get dumped off on the ice first run! Keep up the great plowing!

was neat seeing the rails being scraped down to the clean surface, no snow or ice. it is hard to do it by train { metal agents metal , low traction } such a great job once done. sorry about all the snow fall. we had snow, then freezing rain on top which was a like a skating rink. if you stomped on it , it would brake up. then near night I found the mail box frozen to the ground! it never happens in the warm weather! oh well, we have all things to fix. have a great one!

Oh perhaps for your Engine sander design is you could cast up a "Sand domes" for THE 70 &71 ENGINES WITH COPPER PIPE DOWN TO THE FRONT OF EACH DRIVE WHEELS AND HAVE A PUSH -PULL LEVER TO APPLY SAND AND SHUT OFF SAND .AND USE A R/C BOAT SERVOS TO REMOTE CONTROL PUSH OR PULL THE SANDING LEVERS ON EACH SAND DOMES ON TOP OF EACH ENGINE..AND GO TO VERMONT RAILWAY TRACKS AND PICK UP PILES OF THEIR WHITE TRACKAGE SANDS ALL ALONG THEIR TRACKS WHILE FILMING MILLBROOK PRODUCTION VIDEOS FOR YOUR TRACK SIDE VIDEOS SHOWS 😅😮😢🎉😂❤

You definitely still have a traction problem with the two axil fixed frame power units. Is there no way to get some kind of rail sanding system on these units? Perhaps a separate unit attached to the plow itself could get some grit on the rails?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
They act more like single trucks than fixed frame units. Both locos have equalized, sprung axles. Sanders are still in the future. It takes time to design these things and money to execute the design. The biggest design challenge at the moment is designing a sander system that is simple, easy to maintain, and doesn't significantly alter the character of the locomotives.
@petercruikshank2618
@petercruikshank2618 Жыл бұрын
@@MillBrookRailroad I am sure you have thought about a modified gondola with a center opening that maybe only has two holes over the tracks? You need to be able to control the opening somehow. Where do you place the car? Up front means a plow and behind the locos seems wrong. Hmmm. Another thought... figure out a sand holder that fits in the plow. You may have some space there plus you add some weight to the plow? Again you probably have thought about that too.
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Жыл бұрын
@@petercruikshank2618 My thoughts have been around having the sander on the locomotive itself. I definitely need to do more research, but I have a few projects in front of it.

Have you tried using the "broken" battery(ies) inside the plow as ballast? (drain the acid) It always seems the plow is light. Every video is beautiful! Thank you.
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 11 ай бұрын
Old batteries are valuable. I get $25 to $40 each for them. Cement blocks weigh almost as much, and I've used them a lot in the plow, but the thing that puts it off the most is actually snow buildup on the wheels.

It only derailed once this time. That particular spot in the track needs some attention, so I'm inclined to say that this time, it was track conditions.

Looking straight down at the plow, the most interesting view of this video, NOT, this is why I don't watch your vids till there is nothing left in my feed, I need to add more, you've got one comment and it's mine, the only things wrong with this railroad is it's grade height and the owners inpatients, it may have taken a year longer to get it rolling but just a foot higher would have been an improvement, an elevated railway would be perfect, but would take too long and cost too much .Yeah I understand, that's why I watch mostly when you're on foreign rails.

Could you not plow with two units you would have more power what if you put sand on the rails like the the class 1 railroads do

I did use two units from 12:07 on. Sand would definitely be a good thing. I haven't figured out how I'm going to implement it yet. It's going to take some engineering. Then I'll have to use the sand carefully, so I don't wear holes in the rails.
