I used to use tire chains. I have since switched to using atv tires with no chains. The atv tires work WAY better and don't leave marks on the blacktop.

I engine swapped an old simplicity 5216 with a honda 5hp pressure washer engine because the original engine was blown up. I made a homemade plow and it never bogs down in heavy snow but traction is an issue with the lighter engine

Back when we got that 3 foot I made a cars width path with a shovel and took chunks with the mower to make it big enough for 3 cars lol with my e110 been plowing 3 years woth it no issue need more weight in the back is all I don't have a bracket chains deffinetly needed

My 1990's jd garden tractor has a plow and chains, wheel weights on the back and it has plenty of power and traction. I've used it once with heavy wet snow. The problem is that with the blade at an angle, the front wheels got shoved to the side. It worked fine going straight, but then the snow piles up in front until it can't push the pile any more. I'm thinking about adding weight or tire chains on the front. The guy I bought. it from plowed snow with it for years, power train is fine so far. There's no mower deck, it's just for pushing and pulling things anymore

Your blade system is exactly what I as looking for. A much less expensive alternative to the JD hydraulic setup. Can you give me a name/business where I can call? Seriously, JD says, "no way, you can only go hydraulic." Thanks!

I picked up my blade used from Kijiji. Home Depot and Lowes carry universal and John Deere branded blades: www.homedepot.com/p/Agri-Fab-48-in-Universal-Snowblade-LBD48/205654348 . Crazy that John Deere won't sell you their blades.

Im considering the John deere 46 in blade for my D160 but I am concerned about the Transaxle. Can the D160 transaxle handle a plow, I live in Calgary where we get light dry snow.

It would only last a few seasons. You can rebuild them when they die, its not hard.

It will work until the tranny fails. Then it's big bucks. I'm considering using my D110 but it is very expensive for the plow, wheel weights and chains.

How do you control the blade angle? Or don't you???

On that plow there is a hand lever on the same lever that raises and lowers it when actuated allows you to move blade angle.

Is there a reason why you have the plow and not the snowblower attachment?

Snow blowers on tractors only want to go in straight lines until you get lots of room to turn. I tried it years ago with a Craftsman single stage.

how much weight dd you put on there?

Each suitcase weight is 25 lbs. Which would be 150 pounds plus the rack, so around 160 pounds total.

The power doesn’t even matter. All ride ons have plenty of power. It’s always tires spinning and the fact that they weigh so little. that’s the weakness

Traction is mentioned as the most important point "chains/weight". If you add enough weight to reduce the spinning of the tires then absolutely power matters. Add 150 pounds of weight and a 250 pound operator to an older 14-16 hp lawn tractor, then plow heavy snow. I've personally tried this and the engine is the limiting factor.

@@PROSDIY I push snow with a decades old worn out 12 hp John Deere stx38 the weakest model there is. With chains and weight on the back, it still spins the tires. These mowers should not bog down pushing snow period

You can put chains all around and wheel weights but in my experience it is the hydro transmissions that will not handle the stress. A very expensive fix and not worth the cost.

That’s why I use an older one with manual gearbox. No finicky hydro oil and pump. 15.5hp chains and weight drop it in 2 and it will move all the Minnesota snow I want.

They will plow snow, it's a question of how long before they fail.

That's the question for any vehicle with a plow... I can tell you from experience with the same model I've been plowing an 800 ft driveway 7 years now with nothing but a new blade replacement and tires
