HOTHEAD-But first of all, why "hotheaded"? Because the Super Landini, like its predecessors, was equipped with a Sabathé cycle engine, a very particular type of engine in which the ignition of the air/fuel mixture does not occur thanks to a spark (generated by a spark plug, as in petrol engines), nor by compression (as on diesel engines). On hotheads, combustion is triggered by the high temperatures maintained in the cap, a pre-chamber located inside the head in which the injector atomizes the fuel. If in full operation the operating temperature of the cap (from approximately 400 to 700 degrees) is able to self-maintain itself, starting requires a rather complex procedure: to start the engine it is in fact necessary to manually heat, using an external flame, the metal head. When the red-hot cap reaches a dark red color it is time to send the piston into compression, with an energetic push to the flywheels that awakens the gigantic monster.
ONE CYLINDER, 12 LITERS - We don't just casually talk about "piston" in the singular, and upon closer inspection not even the epithet "monster" is exaggerated when talking about the Super Landini. Its engine is in fact a two-stroke horizontal single-cylinder characterized by a stratospheric displacement of 12,200 cc, obtained thanks to bore and stroke measurements worthy of a naval unit (240 x 270 mm). To the great joy of the operators, who were called upon to endure vibrations that at minimum made the entire vehicle oscillate back and forth. In the latest versions the power reached around 50 horsepower at just over 600 rpm (in the first 40-45 HP), enough to allow the towing of very heavy tools and the static use of machines such as pumps or threshers, which can be used through a grip of strength. The three-speed mechanical gearbox plus rear, the engine and the differential performed a load-bearing function; another peculiarity was represented by the liquid cooling with radiator, which was introduced on the Super Landini in place of the previous evaporation system with tank.
