Recently, my brother informed me that the star fruit tree near our ancestral house is brimming with sweet star fruits (Kamaranka). Later that day, I ventured to pluck some of these fruits. To my amazement, the tree was adorned with a mesmerising array of ripe yellowish star fruits(Carambola), exuding a delightful fruity scent, even though there was an unpleasant odor of overripe ones scattered on the ground. I harvested both ripe and partially ripe star fruits, as the tree bore an abundance, sufficient even for the entire village.
Having made star fruit jam before, I decided to craft another batch given the plentiful yield. Care must be taken when making jam from these fruits due to their high moisture content. My brother also took a few star fruits to prepare a mocktail. After making the jam, I also went to that side to take a peep. Upon sampling his juice, a delightful blend of star fruit, ginger beet(natural carbonated bottled ginger drink) and pomelo pulp, I was treated to a delightful tingling sensation in my mouth when biting the pomelo segments.
Knowing the perishable nature of star fruits, I decided to bake a semolina cake the following day, infusing it with the fruit's essence. Opting for the kitchen stove instead of a traditional oven, I ensured even heat distribution by placing a metal roti pan beneath the baking pan. The resulting cake, mixed with star fruits and dried blueberries, emerged perfectly baked and risen after an hour. To enhance its flavour, I soaked the cake in star fruit juice, adding richness with, already infused orange zest and juice of 6 oranges. Each bite offered a unique blend of flavours, especially with the star fruit jam filling I added for more richness. Witnessing my brother and grandmother relish the cake filled me with immense joy, a happiness beyond words compared to any other joyful moments in life.
