I just found a Axe Head at a job I was working at . The owner said I could have it . Must if sat out in weather for many years . I didn't know about using vinegar you used . I used a grinder with brush to remove the rust . I noticed brand name Plumb PARA EL CEDRO I sprayed clear finish over the short broke handle and axe head for a high gloss shine . I don't think I'll use it, but now I know how to put an edge like you showed. Thank you for sharing , yours looks excellent the way you restored .

@@aktoolco-austinkelley1803 One side of axe head is deep pitted but I think it could be worked over and restored . It has less mushroom then the one you have, but like I said pitted on one side that was exposed to Oklahoma weather for years . On the side it was pitted a thin slice of metal came off . But still has a lot of Character. Part of the wood handle is still attached. Broke at a weak spot . The wood is still really hard and even when I put grinder wire brush , it just polished up , the wood is so hard .

Two tips/ tricks I found, pour your bluing solution into a container and don't go bank into the original container. Stays "fresher"longer. And heat the axe up around 150ish or so, much darker and even. Great video sir!

Came from oldshovel video and you both paid homage to this ax's history. I think the remnants of its previous use and ownership are important, their are plenty of new ax heads out there, restoration is about honoring the piece not just renewing it. Subscribed! Nice style and great presentation of what you do and why.

I will tell you this: what you did with that axe head was amazing. It looks so good and all the grinds and lines are perfect. I will be honest, though, and say that I don't really like what the handle made by Old Shovel looks like :) That axe deserved a better wedged, simple wood handle.

Im really liking how that turned out. Old shovel inspired me to start restoring some old axes that i had. I used super blue also and really loved the result. Though i did discover that you need to read the directions before using it. Failing to neutralize the chemical will make things rust really fast

You are absolutely right! Bluing is oxidizing, and you have to stop the process before it goes too far and rusts your tool!

@@aktoolco-austinkelley1803 You did a great job with the longer format video. How old is the ax? Is the Plumb manufacturer the same Plumb that used to make hand tools?

Yessir, the same one. I would estimate this one is from the 40s-60s. There wasn't a lot of variation in the stamp or the design so it's a little tough to narrow it down any more.

Beautiful result! Loved watching your restoration; you do really nice work. While you use power tools, I didn't see you do anything to compromise the integrity of the steel. I'm an old school vintage hand tool restorer, that learned in my grandfather's garage, in the 50's & 60's. I often cringe, when I see wannabe restorers heating up the metal with die grinders. Waste of good vintage steel. Kudos, for keeping it pro. 👍Subbed... over from Rob's channel.

Found a Plumb autograf in a tree while cutting Firewood. A lot of surface rust and handle very weathered/cracked. I really like how the 2 tone looks, but I’m torn on if i should grind down the pole on mine... Great job, thanks for taking the time to post this!! Also, where did you get that awesome belt sander/buffer??

If you ever plan on restoring the ax again, use a wire cup rush on an angle grinder, it will leave the stamp in tact and will remove the rust perfectly but won't destroy the patina like the vinegar you used. Also much less time consuming. I run my own axe restoration business, When I 1st started restoring ax's about 11 years ago I used vinegar and evaporust but Quickly learned how it destroys the patina And takes far too much time.
