This week's action tip: Plumbing grease
This week's action tip can save you time and aggravation when working with your plumbing. Work with the right products when installing gaskets and rubber products, in this case plumbing grease, a product designed to not degrade gaskets, giving years of sealing power!
Plumber's grease, also known as plumber's faucet grease or silicone plumber's grease, is a lubricant used in plumbing applications. It is a type of grease specifically formulated for use in and around plumbing fixtures, valves, and O-rings. Plumber's grease is typically made from silicone, which is a non-reactive and long-lasting material that can withstand exposure to water, heat, and chemicals commonly found in plumbing systems.
Here are some common uses for plumber's grease:
Faucet and Valve Lubrication: Plumber's grease is applied to the moving parts of faucets, valves, and other fixtures to reduce friction and make them easier to operate. It helps prevent sticking, leaking, and corrosion.
O-Ring Lubrication: O-rings are rubber gaskets used in many plumbing connections to create a watertight seal. Plumber's grease is used to lubricate O-rings, ensuring a proper seal and making it easier to assemble and disassemble parts.
Threaded Connections: Plumbers may apply a thin layer of grease to the threads of pipes and fittings to ease the assembly process and prevent leaks by ensuring a tight seal.
Preventing Corrosion: Plumber's grease can help protect metal parts from corrosion and rust, particularly in water-related applications.
It's important to note that plumber's grease is not a general-purpose lubricant and should only be used in plumbing-related applications. It is designed to be safe for contact with potable (drinkable) water and is usually non-toxic. When using plumber's grease, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions, and only use it in plumbing applications where it is recommended.
