This instalment marks the first time the two presenters have recorded separately, with Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu in Thay's Sitting Still Hut in Plum Village France, and journalist Jo Confino at the Garrison Institute, New York.
Speaking from two different continents, they explore fame and humility. What price do we pay for our fame-obsessed societies? Can humility become a great power? How do we show up in the world? What is it ‘to be enough’ in the world? And how did Thay handle fame and other famous people?
These dimensions are discussed with help from Buddhist teachings, Thich Nhat Hanh’s practices, and the presenters’ personal life stories, giving us a flavor of experiences of fame, but also the power of humility in service to life.
Brother Phap Huu further delves into inferiority, superiority, and equality complexes; openness and insight; unconditional presence; humility in learning and being; simplicity; curiosity; Thay’s bodhisattva energy; and honoring blood and spiritual ancestors. And how is Brother Phap Huu coping with… feline fame?
Jo Confino muses about humility in leadership; the power of leading from the middle; responsible journalism; ‘un-cultivating’ fame; looking inwards and outwards with humility; fame as another form of extraction; and more.
The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.

Thank you 🙏 to you all who produced this pod cast. I am so blessed to be able to hear your wisdom, compassion and true humility. I met Brother Phap Huu last year at Plum Village. I recognised his voice from hearing the pod casts. At 82 I still have many things to learn, hear and experience. Bless you 🙏

Thank you for this profound and vital teaching! So often the word "ego" comes up in the podcast as an obstacle to true humility. Years ago, I recall a wise young person telling me that the word EGO is really an acronym which means "easing goodness out." I've never forgotten this statement and, now at 78 with a beginner's mind, I continue to learn through this wonderful podcast the value and embodied necessity of humility----and I am grateful!👍

This podcast held particular resonance for me. I would not have expected that the Parkinson's disease that I deal with, and the anxiety that comes with that as a symptom, would call me to respond with a recognition that it is humility that I must cultivate in relation to both my physical and my spiritual well being. Thank you! I am so grateful for this podcast!

I have so much to learn and its such a pleasure! I hope I can listen to this podcast many times and commence to live true humility. I am enjoying so much this podcast and its main theme..! Thank you everyone for continuing this very useful and special podcast. You have managed to go deeper and more genuine every time. This is one of my favorite podcasts, and I will probably enjoy listening to it repeatedly until I can interiorize authentic humility. You are spreading seeds worldwide in such an “amene” way, easy and approachable, relatable. You accompany our paths as teachers walking right beside us. I really hope you can continue this proyect if there is that possibility! You brother Phap Huu and Jo are as close as ever. You are getting better and better with every podcast! Congratulations 😊🙏🏻 I am so grateful for all this. This is my favorite podcast ever!

Thank you so much for this podcast on humility in service to life. As always with these wonderful podcasts I was so taken by Brother Phap Huu's and Joe's openness and willingness to share their vulnerability. This podcast has particular resonance for me as I was recently at Plum Village where I was fortunate to meet Brother Huu a few times. The patience, kindness, and humility Brother Huu showed to me and the many others who were so keen to talk to him was beautiful. With deep bows of gratitude and respect.

Hello dear Jo and Brother Phap Huu, and all the people who bring us this podcast. This is my favourite podcast and I'm really enjoying it. I was wondering if we could please have an episode about self compassion. I have been going through a very stressful time in my life lately and I have been trying to be more compassionate with myself. I have realised that I'm very hard on myself and I would like to learn more about self compassion. Thank you 🙏❤
