Welcome to episode seven of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives.
In this episode, hosts Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino were recorded in Thich Nhat Hanh’s former residence in Plum Village, the ‘Sitting Still Hut’.
Here, they talk about the yearly Rains Retreat - a 90-day retreat started by the Buddha - including the aspirations and other key concepts at the core of this gathering of practitioners. Brother Phap Huu explains in detail the origins of this ancient tradition, and how it unfolds in Plum Village, including some special insights from this year’s retreat.
Both then share their own aspirations, and discuss taking refuge in the sangha, the need to slow down, stillness, getting support from the community for our aspirations, and that even zen masters need constant reminders to practice. (Did Thay need help from the sangha? And is Phap Huu as busy as the others think?)
The conversation touches upon our (and their) relationship with ‘stuff’; a free yard sale in the monastery; how to know when we have enough; and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s jackets, and how he relates to his few material possessions.
Jo opens up about his youth and the burden of collective pain; letting go of possessions; and getting some of his best creative ideas while sitting still on a train.
You’ll also find out where the yellow-orange in our podcast’s logo comes from. And autumnal fruit trees make a cameo appearance.
Finally, Brother Phap Huu shares daily tips for beginners’ practice, and ends the episode with a guided meditation to find calm and solidity.

I think grace in my heart ❤️ introduced to plum village videos and recently started listening to these videos , what a beautiful inner journey conversations. So sad that the world is seeing Buddha pics and idols as an ornament in their homes instead if everyone can understand the heart ♥️ of Buddha and budhisatwa , as brother told in every video , as we are the enlightenment seeds how beautiful it will be to see a world with new eyes 🙏🏻 love to Thai master and love to mooji baba who spoke about Thai master . Wonderful wonderful wonderful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you. Very interesting talk and journey of getting to know life at plum village, being human, aspirations.. My aspiration is to deepen/renew my practice of stillness and concentration. Refresh it, nourish it, love it… it was never a characteristic I felt comfortable expressing because I wasn’t ‘doing anything’ or it made others uncomfortable because I wasn’t filling the silence. But I am inspired by the image of the reflection, the still lake. Very inspired by the energy that is held by the monks and nuns nourishing their joy. What a practice. It is not an easy practice and much easier for me to drop it quickly and nourish my anger so I renew my concentration to be still. I enjoyed the meditation very much. I just started to study the Full Awareness of Breathing and it deepened my understanding of that sutra. 🙏

May I ask a question--if you don't have bank accounts or money to speak of, where do you get the means to purchase 'stuff'?? Someone has to buy these items in the first place before you can swap them out at room changing day, no?? PS, love this podcast; so much better for my sanity than scrolling for and listening to the news hour after hour. Thank you for sharing your way of life with those of us who might like to be a monastic but don't have the ability to do so...

This may seem like a strange post but I'm hoping to find some help here.. I have had some kind of negative energy or being or entity in my life for the last 9 years or so. I don't know what to call it because I haven't seen it's shape with my eyes. For example, it sends thing flying in our house (especially my son's toy cars) and moves things around. I hired a medium and he said they are demons. That was 3 years ago. But I don't know how to get them to leave. Every time we move, they follow us. We moved clear across the country and the same things are still happening (right in front of us). Either we have some serious bad karma or these entities are just feeding off of our energy?? My son gets very scared and I never know how to explain why these bizarre things keep happening. Can anyone help me figure this out? I really need to get them to leave us. We have started using mindfulness and meditation, positive thinking, praying, being peaceful but nothing works.

approach the entities with politeness and friendliness--ask them what they want, wait. If they give no answer, tell them they are not welcome to stay. Burn some sage, open the windows and imagine the spirits leaving as the smoke exits through the windows. If this doesn't work at first, keep trying until it does.
