The Turkish Mauser along with the swedish one are much longer, kinda like a WW1 style, and the German Mauser is a carbine or karabiner " in German hence the designation kar 98 98 is the year it was originally manufactured 1898 I believe, but the world war 1 German version was also much longer., They all function 100% identically. I have a Ugo Mauser that was(still is nearly 8 years later) just SOAKED in Cosmoline; it gets over 100⁰ quite regularly where I live in NorCal and some days I'll set it out in the garage and throughout the day go through a ridiculous amount of paper towels or rags wiping away all the cosmoline that's sweating out. First time I went out and shot it, after the 6th or so shot, my cheek was SO damn greasy. Don't shoot it too often because of the price for ammo, and after the 8th shot or so, that hard, steel buttplate just hammers my shoulder. Ive an m96 Gustav (sporterized and scoped) that has seen a Lot of rounds. Those bolts and recievers had a bit different metal that is realy hard. Mine has a groove where the extractor claw has worn into the bolt body. She's been cycled a hell of a lot of times. My as issued Husquevarna m38 was stamped 1st grade (minimal wear) at last armourers inspection. Shes a sweety in all respects. Fabulous rifles and calibre.
@cykeok352510 ай бұрын
Yeah, the extractor claw is hardened and tempered.. I think it might be case hardening (covered in high carbon material and "baked"). Metallurgically, it makes the surface layer harder but less flexible. The lack of flexibility is not an issue in its normal application, but the hardness means it it won't wear on contact with relatively much softer brass casings (the softer material will wear). Since it's a harder steel, it'll wear into the bolt too, but never enough to cause an issue I think.
@gunsforevery17 ай бұрын
Considering the m1903 has a magazine cut off, and they were trained (initially) to single load (saving the mag as a reserve), I’d say they anticipated overriding the controlled feed and it was safe to do so for the life of the rifle (at least with the 1903 and those with a cutoff)

I'd argue that these were designed with the idea that single feeding might happen and thus the creators of that design likely chose a flexing extractor like on the AR-15 bolt or similar to external extractors on pistol slides, and not a fixed/internal extractor like on a 1911.

According to the army manual, it is the right way of doing it. "The rifle can also be loaded with six cartridges. The sixth cartridge is then positioned on top and pushed down somewhat by the left hand fingers, so that the bolt slides over the cartridges in the magasine & bring the sixth cartridge into the chamber. Loading completed according to 5 & 6" Point 5 and 6 is the closing and locking of the bolt, followed be engaging the safety.

@nebiyuesayas56009 ай бұрын
For any gun with a magazine cutoff (so the Lee-Enfields, the Krags, the Turkish M93s, maybe something else I'm forgetting), an extra round is basically built in. Just load the mag all the way, flip the cutoff on, throw in a round and close, then flip it off. The mag's usually designed to allow this so it doesn't damage the gun.

Please don't do this, I've had an extractor damaged by single feeding like that. It started slipping over the rims of sticky cases and leaving the case stuck in the chamber, which would have to be removed with a cleaning rod. Literally all you have to do is slide the rim under the extractor and you can still get 5+1 anyways, it's not complicated, just use the rifle the way it's designed to work.

@spaxxor8 ай бұрын
It's only bad for the extractor if the extractor isn't beveled. Otherwise it's mostly fine. Most Mauser's have a Beveled extractor, and if memory serves, had a mag cutoff for single loading. So for this gun it's mostly fine.

@oloflarsson76297 ай бұрын
Largely thanks to norwegian input. They (the norwegians) were hell-bent on the union of Sweden-Norway getting the norwegian Krag as a common rifle, so they brought up every little detail that they thought was wrong with the Mauser. Mauser fixed allmost all issues (except for a few, that led to the Mauser M98), Sweden got the Mauser, but the norwegians still decided to stick with the inferior Krag. It was also the Norwegians that were responsible for the 6,5x55 SKAN being what it is. The norwegians wanted a rimless round, the swedes were stuck on the idea of a rimmed round. As a comprimise they decided on a semi-rimmed round, until Mauser demonstrated the superiority of the rimless round, and that the norwegians were right. So in the end, the norwegians got the cartridge they wanted from the start (with some minor dimensional changes)

You will put more wear and stress on the extractor and it will break sooner because of it, but it's big and beefy enough it should still last for a long ass time. I wouldn't do it with pistols as they have much less substantial extractors and are much more prone to breaking. If you're worried about damaging a numbers matching extractor on an old rifle, get a spare and put it in the gun for shooting to keep the matching wear items preserved.
