Quarter panel repair that I did a few months back on my 1974 Plymouth Duster 360. This video shows all the main steps and my perspective on how it went. What went well and what I need to improve on.
I mention the Fitzee Patch Method, that can be found with this link:

Your Channel had been proposed by KZfaq to me. May be cause I watched Fitzees. You are happy with your result and it is much better than before. And that counts. Greetings from the Baltic Sea / Germany

@@DustorBust Ok, don't get mad at me, but I want to suggest something that is probably not an option. I'm kind of a 74 360 expert. If I were you (I know, "your not.") I would repaint the car the factory green, and put the factory stripe back on. The body work could be perfected by a body shop at a low cost since you have it all apart. It will be more valuable if you do it that way. It could be a numbers matching car. It would be amazing! It's so rare. With that being said, it is amazing the way you are doing it too, and I love it. Way more valuable in it's original state. You could still add some bolt on's. Ok, I won't bother you again with my opinion.

A couple things about welding and warping sheet metal. I'm sure you already know the bead holds a lot of heat which spreads to the surrounding metal. The thicker and longer it is the longer it stays hot. In my training/experience I found welding a bead about 1/2" long and immediately hitting it with a grinder to knock it down helps dissipate the heat. Use a *sharp* disc-I use 3M Green Corps 24 grit and replace it often. A dull grinding disc will actually create more heat and you want to cut off that excess weld ASAP so it cools faster. And spread the beads out. Keep skipping back and forth across the cut/weld line when you weld. I usually try to space mine at least a foot apart. Weld, grind, move. Also, they make a clay product you can use to help absorb the heat and keep it from spreading across the panel. Roll it up in a round snake and press it to the metal a couple inches from the weld area surrounding it on both sides. I was 25 years in the auto restoration biz before I left for more lucrative gigs and my perpetual project is a '72 Duster 340 (factory black/black 4 speed car). That one got the lower quarters replaced and while it turned out well enough I was never happy with the 'soft' way they were stamped-the body lines are rather vague and I had to do a lot of fiddly filler and primer to get them as sharp as I'd like. So much so that I'm now considering full replacement quarter panels from AMD as they're well regarded in the business and a full quarter has minimal filler work only in the roof pillar post. Pricey, but for the time saved I think they'll be worth it.

I was only one spot away lol the design of the trunk extension curving down into the inside of the rear quarter is what kills these things. That’s why I’m making my trunk floor myself and removing that aspect. Gotta move around when welding so you don’t warp the metal. Tack every few inches moving all around. Never forget a grinder and paint will make you the welder you ain’t. Bondo helps 😂

Interesting idea, welding it shut. I was leaning towards filling it with some foam or something, but not sure what would do the job and inhibit moisture also. Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I thought I was moving enough, but clearly not. Need more practice, going to have to get another beater when this is done 😁.

@Mopar 73Duster Hi, thanks for checking out the channel! Yeah, that rust spot seems to be super common. I didn't think the patch was too much work. I know some people opt to do the full quarter, but for a small section like that I think it is easier to just do a small custom patch. Good luck with yours! 😀

I love Dusters, but I'm no body man, not a welder, nothing. Just an admirer. May I ask a question that to others may seem too obvious? There are companies that sell the small panel you fabricated, and even larger sections of quarter panel. Why not just buy one already shaped right and cut/weld on the new piece? Is it cost? Pride in personal fabrication? Are such purchased pieces inferior quality? It just seems like a guy that can weld could just buy, cut out, weld, and be done, and finish with a perfect shaped piece with a lot less time invested??
@DustorBust
@DustorBust Жыл бұрын
Hi Danger, excellent questions. I am also no pro body man, but I can tell you what I have experienced. The cost is less of an issue. Even a full quarter is like 3-400, not ridiculous as far as classic car stuff goes. A small panel will need to be blended in the same way that I had to do this one. Fully welding the sheets together. To me that is the hard part. Making 2 pieces one and it not being noticeable is super tough for a beginner. If the damage is more extensive a full quarter saves on some of the body lines and shaping for sure. Blending to the roof line can be a challenge and getting the gaps to trunk and door need to be done with close attention. I'm general if it is a small simple patch I would just as easily make it myself. Anything complex or large it is worth getting a prefabricated panel. As far as I have seen the panel quality is not an issue. No matter what route you go it is just a lot of work, but I find it rewarding. I take pride in even my beginner patches, part of the journey. The more you do the better it gets. Good luck, you should definitely give it a try if you are interested. Thanks for the comment!

Nice job, however they make a full patch for the lower quarter. You could have shortened the repair time. Wet the floor before painting keeps dirt down and paint does not stick to the floor.
