Speaking with reporters on the final day of the 2024 NATO summit in Washington, D.C., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces that the federal government intends to achieve the NATO defence spending target of two per cent of GDP by 2032. In his remarks, he highlights several recent defence spending commitments, including measures in the recently announced revamped defence plan. Canada has been facing mounting pressure from NATO allies to reach the two per cent benchmark.
The prime minister is joined at the news conference by ministers Mélanie Joly (foreign affairs) and Bill Blair (defence).
