It'd be such a bummer when I inevitably hate the first few iterations of what I've made and throw away $500 worth of clay.

Fun stuff! I made wedding rings in 2002 from this and I had several arguments with jewelers/silversmiths telling me silver clay didn't even exist. It dries quick and the secret is to fire it fully. When I used it there was zero information in English on how to use it so I kinda winged it for the most part lol.

PMC is a very sticky clay so it's a good idea to use a barrier cream on your fingers and tools so you're not loosing expensive clay. It's also very difficult to sculpt. It shrinks a substantial amount when fired as you're burning out the organic material. You can fuse silver together but you run the risk of melting either part as the temperature to fuse is very close to melting point. With your silver surfer piece you could get a bit of silver solder and join them that way. Would love to see how you planned finish that off.

silver clay consists of silver particles and a binder that evaporates when heated, for anyone that was curious how it could be silver and a clay and hasn't used this stuff before.

The secret to a really smooth, shiny finish is to sand with super fine grit papers and then gently burnish *before* you fire. I did a workshop with silver clay ages ago back in 2005 and loved it. I made a few pieces and would have liked to experiment more but unfortunately the cost was too much at the time. I love the patina/colour effects you added to the pen. Maybe if you revisit the silver clay you could make some jewellery for Mrs Jazza :) It would be interesting to see you sculpt/form on that ultra tiny level. (You can even set gems in if you get lab created stones.) Oh.. the nose ring doesn't look terrible! ;)

Had such a blast looking at this!! I'm a goldsmith, and I always love it when someone picks up some of the trade. It is a price profession, but there is nothing more fun than seeing something looking like doodoo turning into a piece of glossy amazingness. If you ever want to do this again, I can help you out with some tips and tricks regarding getting a good high gloss polish and with soldering multiple clay pieces together. The clay works in the following way. It is a silver grain infused with a soldering type fluid that gives it that kneedability and makes sure when you heat it, it melts together. The reason you got fire it because you burn those fluids out of your material. Heating it up to fiery red makes sure that the silver is at the start of its melting road and starts to bind together while evaporating the fluids. P.s. please don't you plastic cups with hot stuff. Just use an old pickle jar with more water. Gives my heart an easier time

Safety note: It's generally a bad idea to wear gloves near any rapidly spinning tool! The fabric can get easily hooked and wrap on the spinning shaft, leading to injury and possibly appendage loss! Thick all-leather gloves near a low-torque dremel are probably going to be okay, but there are so many other solutions to this problem -- wooden ring clamps are useful for this exact purpose, but there are plenty of solutions that don't require specialized tools from clothes pins, small woodworking clamps, pliers with a bit of padding. Be safe out there kids and and keep the fabric away from the spinny things!

I've used it before and it's great stuff. However you have to account for shrinkage as each clay type has a different percentage if you're blending it with different metals. There is a copper version of this stuff too. Oh, and you could use glazes as well instead of paint to colour any models.

When using a rotary tool (or drill press) you'll want to avoid using gloves. If the glove gets caught in the tool, you could easily lose a finger.

Fun Fact: When you were polishing the ring and said it was generating a lot of heat. Out of all metals, silver has the highest thermal conductivity. No wonder why it was getting so hot

Suggestion for anyone wanting to try out Precious Metal Clay, instead of using a regular craft mat, use a glass craft mat/work surface. The clean up is so much easier, and the fact that you can use a razor blade to scrape together all of the excess means you'll have next to no loss. The same holds true for polymer clay, though the drastically lower cost doesn't make it as important as it is for PMCs.

Have you considered using the acylic uv cured nail art powders to do 2D art on an acrylic panel. Or even trying it for a 3D sculpture?

I collect fountain pens and I was absolutely crying laughing at that commercial. Terrible CGI and needlessly expensive indeed. 😂 I would spend £40,000 on your pen before I even considered the chaos pen! Way more character for sure.

You need a buffing wheel and a buffing compound not a grinding wheel which will grind it away.

Oh, now you’ve done it - once you start with jewellery making / working with silver you’ve just opened a door to a whole new world of tools and equipment. To really shine up your silver pieces you need to get some rouge and one of those cotton buffing wheels. Working with silver is so satisfying. And soldering your board to the wave is fairly straightforward. Though you need some flux and silver solder. The main issue with silver clay is that you get a fine silver (99.9%) piece which is very soft - so it scratches easily and would be better used on something that won’t be exposed to a lot of wear and tear. Never get into a sword fight carrying a fine silver sword!

pmc3 is a clay compound that contains sterling silver and is "activated" in a sense when exposed to heat/energy. PMC stands for precious metal clays and has silver in a fine powder form which are all bounded together by something known as organic binders, once it is heated, it dehydrates and basically dissintegrates leaving the clay behind. You have to be careful with this clay or it'll become silver and you'll be unable to make it into clay again.

It was fun watching you work with a medium that I’ve been working with for years. Personally I prefer bronze and copper metal clay and the kind I use requires a kiln but they do have brands that can be torch fired just like the silver clay. It’s also cheaper than silver.

Hi Jazz! As a fan and follower of the channel for years, I'm glad you didn't set the studio on fire with this video... As a jeweler and goldsmith, I can tell you that you did something amazing! I have some suggestions for you: using an oxidizer instead of paint, in pieces with engravings or textures, it has an incredible effect; you can easily solder the board to the wave using silver solder; if you want to keep the silver shiny, without darkening, have it bathed in rhodium.

that PMC clay stuff is really cool! My mom makes a lot of jewelry, and I've seen her use it a few times before. She made these really cool looking silver leaves out of it, and a few crosses. I believe you can also get it in other metals as well?

I'm actually training to be a jeweller and silver clay is something I've wanted to try out but it's a bit expensive for just experimentation right now so I was glad that you did it for me! You need polishing compounds, like rouge and Tripoli, to get that final mirror finish, but still, great first play around with the medium. Welcome to the world of sintered metal. Now discover the awesomeness that is metal 3D printing filament. Also if you have some fire-grade bricks you can stack them into a small calcinator chamber, which works a bit better. Burning the clay from the outside does alright, but evenly sintering it through and through in an oven is even better. Also don't be afraid if it catches on fire--that's what you actually want! You're burning off filler material so the metal is all that's left.

I feel like Jazza could rock an earring like that, he probably did when he was younger, maybe he should try it out again.

You need to use silver solder to connect the surfboard to the wave. I recommend looking at either northernmudlarks (they turn their finds into jewelry/sculptures using metal) or Jodie boo who uses it in her art and jewellery

Awesome video jazza!! I am a blacksmith and this is a really cool and unique medium. I would have liked to see you move to a figner grit of sandpaper or stone just to get those grind marks out of the silver. If that doesn't work try going against the grain and you should get a really nice shiny finish. I must say I love the colors and the concept it really is a beautiful pen!

Goldsmith here, and while I've heard of the metal clay I've never really messed with it. Fascinating stuff all the same! And yeah, metal gets really dang hot when polishing. Sometimes its useful to have water nearby that you can dip it into in order to cool it off quickly, or I just put it on a cool steel block if it gets a bit too hot. Should look into doing freeform casting at sometime(stuff like cuttlebone casting, water casting, broom/spaghetti casting, or bean casting) and experiment what you can make by just pouring molten silver onto various things. (:
