Ogaga, thank you for doing this video. I have been in a PM role for over 20 years doing IT Systems Engineering related projects and programs. I am PMP Certified, twice actually. I had the certification in 1999 shortly after completing my MBA. After three or four years I let it lapse and for many years didn't really worry about it. Since I worked for a government agency it really didn't matter that much as internal job postings never included having a PMP as a requirement. That is until quite recently. I recertified and wrote the PMP certification under PMBOK 7.0 in 2021 because of Agile. Agile and Hybrid frameworks are starting to gain preeminence in IT projects today. A career is a journey completed over many years and encompasses many seasons. I work for an organization now that will sponsor me to get an MSc in Project Mangement (or a second masters in any Business-Related area like Organizational Management). Being a lifelong learner, this satisfies my need to fulfil my curiosity thought academic pursuits. Is it overkill after having PM experience and an MBA? Perhaps. Is it essential for my job? No. I agree with you 100% that if employment is your goal then certifications carry more weight and bring immediate benefits. That said I think any educational experience is valuable. Having a professional Master's degree, I think does help set you apart from your peers in ways that can yield long term benefits. Having a PMP unfortunately won't make anyone a Project Manager, only the experience of working projects and programs will do that. A PMP cannot teach anyone soft skills for example, or the ins and outs of how project finance works. Yes you get a bit of EVM to measure performance but even this is limited. I would tell anyone desiring a career as a PM that they need to inject some career design into their thought process. Think about it holistically using whatever means at their disposal to develop both a short term and long-term perspective. In the past the only way to gain serious PM knowledge was through sweat and working many projects and I would offer making many mistakes. Although this is somewhat counter intuitive as a PM you probably learn the most through failing. The term fail often and quickly is probably the best way to say it Today you have resources like MOOCs and PMI sponsored courses and events that a student of the profession can use to help gain and refine some of these critical skills. Studying and passing a PMP does set one apart as demonstrating a desire to hold to the ethics and practices of the profession. You come away with a basic understanding about the mechanics of how one goes about setting up a framework in which to manage a project. Frameworks are great but they are only guideposts, the real test is can you actually manage teams and customer expectations, using tools at your disposal to manage time budget and resources to successfully deliver something of value. I would suggest that the real value that MSc brings is giving you a safe place to practice and hone those soft skills like negotiation and team communications that are vital for a PMs success. I would also suggest if people wanted to take the MSc path choose a program with a strong research component. Working in a Cohort and doing a major team project or thesis as part of the program helps to build those soft skills that are going to really set one apart as a PM. Being able to quickly and efficiently research a problem and offer a solution is also a great skill to have because PMs often find themselves in the role of internal consultant to an organization. If you get into the Agile space, you might find yourself even acting more as a Product Owner at some point than having the traditional PM role.

I read your comment with keen interest and I must admit that you have a vast experience in the field of PM. However, I recently started my Masters in Project management. I would love to be under your tutelage even through my journey of PM. How do I connect to you aside from youtube?

Nice one........I think that was obvious already to me. I feel Nigerians were the ones that asked you. If people pay attention to job market competency requirements they would have seen all you said. Anyways I think you need to do a video between PRINCE II and PMP (which is better). Seems like American certifications have a better global edge than British qualifications. Thanks Ogaga.

Funny how I was having This same conversation with someone in church today and she is taking her MSC already and was trying to sell how MSC is better than being certified. Though I'm already taking my Google Course in PM . But the mere fact that Msc reminds me of lecturing and all that is simply not it for me. I am glad you've been consistently dishing out amazing content since you came onboard here. How do one connect with you outside YT?
