Breath. It’s the missing pillar in health. We’ve been talking about this for years and we’ve included breathing among our fundamentals since I first read Patrick McKeown’s The Oxygen Advantage. And, I just LOVE the way James captures the importance of breathing in this book. The first words on the inside flap of the book deliver the point with a sledgehammer: “No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or strong you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly.” Big Ideas we explore include how to breathe optimally and why it's so important, the #1 tip, oral posture (how's yours?) and the perfect breath (think 5.5 + 5.5 for 5.5!).

Learned this from my chiropractor in Northern CA: 1. Fresh air is brain food, clean pores out, yawn need more sleep or deeper breath 2. Water (8x) 8oz glasses a day (distilled water) 3. Sunshine (moderation) 20-30 minutes 4. Proper Nutrition: avoid preservatives and whites (bread, sugar, milk, salt). Fast 1/7 days, local honey as a sweetener. 5. Exercise; stay limber, stretch. Tone up, don't bulk up. 6. Rest; 7-8 hours a day resting. Firm mattress -- not pillow tops. 7. Positive Mental Attitude; gratitude 8. Lift properly; square up, head straight, bend knees, carry objects close to the chest. By Paul Bragg

(1) Breathing less creates more energy. (2) inhale for 5.5 seconds, exhale for 5.5 seconds, which makes 5.5 breaths per minute. Thank you!

Loved this and have been upping my practice on this as a result. Finally started with the mouthtape. Managed it for about a month without my wife noticing, having decided to spare her this latest experimentation. A "what on earth are you doing" comment a few days back finally saw me busted. Thankfully she laughed and the exercise is now much easier sans ninja'ing.

It's about optimizing the CO2 to push out the Oxygen from your hemoglobin. Inhale less frequently to live longer - Optimize resting heart rates and optimize heart rate variability! Great insights Brian, thank you!

1-Says that the perfect breath is to inhale 5.5 seconds and exhale 5.5 seconds. But then it says that your exhalations should be a little longer than your inhalations. Can someone clarify this for me? 2- Regarding the first doubt, I have two more doubts according to your answer: a) If the main goal is to get a 5,5 second breath during the whole day, how do I achieve this? b) If on the contrary your inhalations should be longer during the whole day, how can I achieve this? 3- Talk about excessive breathing and breath holding. Here it would be enough to do the Wim Hof breathing (TUMMO), wouldn't it, because in it you do both. 4- How does this apply in sports? a) weight lifting B) running/walking 5- And when sitting for several hours? because the posture complicates the breathing.
