Matthew Walker is one of the world’s leading neuroscientists and sleep experts. He’s a professor at UC Berkeley (and former professor at Harvard) who has spent decades studying why we sleep and how to, as per the sub-title of this book, unlock the power of sleep and dreams. As you know if you’ve been following along, I’m a HUGE advocate of Optimizing our sleep as a fundamental practice in Optimizing our lives. This book has made me EVEN MORE bullish about the power of sleep. The consequences of chronically depriving ourselves of the sleep we need? Well, they’re astonishingly devastating-dramatically increasing the odds of having everything from mood disorders to cancer (and everything else we don’t want). Big Ideas we explore include the fact that you're more likely to get struck by lightning than have the gene that let's you get by on less than the recommended sleep, the universality of sleep (even worms sleep!!), resetting baselines, the iPad effect (did you know how much using one before sleep messes w/your melatonin?), and some tips to Optimize your sleep TONIGHT!!

It's not just about why we sleep, but how we sleep. Put your cellphone in a lead box, have no alarm clocks at your bedside and also turn off the lights! We want our batteries fully charged in the morning!

Awesome book and PNTV thanks. That idea of the clock springing back and falling forwards being a mass global experiment and data set every year is powerful. Fascinated to see what emerges from the pandemic situation on that, which has been a global experiment on an even more staggering level. I suspect people across the the world have been getting more sleep, given the lack of work and school commutes. Just on a personal front, i know that i was getting more sleep during lockdown here. In the last two weeks, as school get up times return, i am falling asleep on the sofa come evening time once more and the afternoon energy slump is back too. Its interesting to be confronted with the changing baselines so starkly. Previously i had been used to this, and considered thats how i was to a certain extent. During lockdown though, it wasnt happening. So, very clearly that extra 40 to 60 minutes of sleep is what i need to avoid that and to return to a healthier baseline. I imagine many people will have the same experience. Of course, getting the extra sleep is harder than so clearly seeing the difference it makes, but it helps reinforce the need.
