In this episode, we explore some of the undocumented features of the Teenage Engineering PO-33 KO! Specifically, we look at how to copy and paste samples without engaging the auto-slice. This allows you to make custom drum kits your PO-33 KO! We hope that you enjoy!

For clarity, here are the steps for the copy and paste trick discussed in the video:
1. Copy a sound by pressing Write and Sound, then select a drum sound slot.
2. Without letting go of Write and Sound, select a step from 1-16 where you want to paste your sample.
3. If you keep holding down write and sound, and keep selecting steps, it will paste the sample into each one.

There's a similar thing that happens when copying a drum bank to a melodic bank. The last drum sound you hit gets copied, then you can pitch it around like a melodic sample. Idk if you can re pitch and copy back down, but the FXs do that already, so whatever. There might be a benefit on pitch vs speed tho, if they retune things differently

Thanks! Currently there are no firmware updates for the KO. Although it may be possible, I think they develop it once and move onto other devices. At most they have come out with other editions of the KO, like the street fighter edition, etc. but they still have the same functions, just new sounds.

Is this trick different from the operation “copy slice” in the PO-33 manual? Version 1.0 of the manual on the TE website reads, “to copy the last triggered slice from one drum sound to another; hold write + sound and press any drum key 9-16 and then any key 1-16.”

hey dude awesome tips cute dog, i love you. How do you copy the pitch and the volume + filter parameters from a specific step into another step? does that make sense? i keep messing up everything accidentally deleting steps lol
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The method shown here is for copying and pasting individual sounds, not necessarily steps. You can copy and paste whole patterns which would also copy the parameters of that pattern. You can then manipulate the copied pattern, but I know that’s not exactly what you’re looking for. And you can copy and paste individual steps by pressing and holding the step to copy and pressing a step to paste it. As far as I can tell, only the sound slot and note length can be edited on an individual step. Filter, resonance and other parameters are set to the sound slot/kit not the steps of a pattern. If anyone in the community knows something more about this, please comment below. Thanks!

Looks like to avoid auto slice you need to copy the sample from melodic section (the drum sound that you copied from drum section and saved in melodic section (the one that you like)) and when pasting to the drum section you need to choose the bank 9-16 and while still pressing "paste" buttons select the exact slot 1-16. Can we call that "another Melody section with 16 slots X 8 banks" taking into consideration that the amount of memory is still total 40 seconds for anything sampled into the machine? I have a question: Can you copy and paste sounds within drum section to overwrite those that you don't like with those you like to kinda organize the space within the drum kit? My KO is still on it's way to me so I can't try all this now ... :)
@shiut555
@shiut555 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, just tried it out, if you copy a sound back into the same drum kit it overwrites the old one. So, yeah, could be used to move samples around. I imagine though the best would be to make a copy of the whole drum kit and rearrange in a new kit so you don't accidentally loose a sample by overwriting it. Edit: Maybe the drums would have to be all be pulled or went through melodic first in that drum kit so the sample copies over into the single "sample bank" inside the drumkit. Edit2: Tested it out some more, seems it transfers the single drumcuts into the same or other drum kits fine.

Awesome video, I am just learning my po-33,and will def come back to this in the future. But in the meantime I i have. Question for you, so today I sampled a loop (meant to loop, not be chopped) but when i play it, and the sequencer starts counting from 1 to 16, the loop starts again before it is finished becuase it's too long. Now in the MPC, I could set the bpm, then remedy this by making the bars longer.. is there a way to make the bars longe on the po-33? Or are we just stuck with the 16 beat pattern? The only way Ive found is to link 2 patterns, but I don't see this working if a single sample is still playing out before the second pattern would start. Have you guys ever ran into this?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think I understand what you want to do which is to extend the sample past 16 steps. Unlike the MPC, you can't change the pattern length on the KO. It's 16 steps and only 16 steps. However, you can change step lengths, but you are still limited to stay within 16 steps. You could try halving the BPM and writing the beat twice as fast, but you would loose the resolution of the step sequencer. You could also chain patterns, as you pointed out. The trick there would be to break your sample into two parts. Use half on the first pattern and half on the second pattern. But thats about it, its the limit of a 16 step sequencer. I hope that helps.

@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
So, it’s a bit complicated to explain, but I’ll try. There’s limited polyphony on the device. If you have several sounds at once, eventually you will run out of voices and they start getting cut off. Also, each sound slot can play one sound per step. But multiple sound slots can play at once until you run out of voices. Lastly, only one sample can be loaded into each sound slot ( though drum samples are divided into multiple sounds). I hope that makes sense. Good luck.

@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. And sorry that its a bit confusing. I'll do my best to explain it a little more. So the KO's drum section essentially has two layers, one layer is the kit which holds 16 steps, and the other layer is the steps themselves. A typical workflow on the KO would be to record or paste your sample directly into the kit layer, and this automatically slices your sample into the 16 steps. But the "game changer" feature is the ability to paste a sample directly to one of the 16 steps within the kit. This bypasses the slicing feature, and allows you to load any samples to each of the 16 steps within the drum kit. The drum sample section of the KO has 8 kits located on sound slots 9-16. So this copy and paste trick opens up a lot of potential to create 8 custom drum kits. To do the copy and paste method correctly, it requires you to get the button press sequence in the right order and remember to hold WRITE & SOUND throughout the entire button sequence. The order of operations is important. But the trick is not hard once you get the sequence correct. I hope that helps!

Thanks for elaborating. One thing to know about the KO is that everything is saved in real-time. If you record into a sound slot it is instantly saved to memory and whatever was there gets overwritten. Same with patterns, if you alter a pattern it is instantly saved. This can take some getting use to to, but it’s one less thing to worry about. It’s best to think about the KO as being one song at a time type of device. Make a song, record it to an external recorder and then make another song. Jumping between songs is not what this device was designed for. I hope that helps!

Mistakes, experimentation and practice are all part of making music. That’s not device specific and you will need to deal with that with this device and any other. If you approach the device as if you’re making something that’s precious, then that can impede your ability to get anything made. Instead, use it to learn, grow, practice and have fun with. If something doesn’t work out, just do it over or try something new. And nothing is permanent, you can always do a factory reset if you want to get back to how the device was out of the box. I hope that helps.
