@@rhodophobia9572 I’m not Native American, I’m not even American, but I know just how cruel people can be, regardless of gender, race and ethnicity. I also know how kind, caring and loving people can be, regardless of gender, race and ethnicity. I have known and faced discrimination. The best way to fix discrimination tho, isn’t with weapons. It is with understanding, which is what makes this song so beautiful. She doesn’t berate him, insult him or attack him, she enlightens him. The only true cure for discrimination of any form is understanding, tolerance and patience anyone who suggests otherwise is misguided. That is one of the many amazing messages within this song.

For those who think Pocahontas basically 'putting the white man in his place', I can tell you that she's doing something greater than that. She's (metaphorically) taking his hand and walking him through her world in order to show him a new perspective to the world without judgement. I can't tell you how many people I've come across with their (metaphorical) fists up in order to protect their views. As an aspiring school teacher, I've been working hard to prove to others that the most durable philosophical ideas stand strong on their own, and that teaching an individual requires a willful listener. And a willful listener is one who has experienced a caring embrace, instead of antagonism. From there, the two can "paint with the colors of the wind".

Hi it's 2020 and I think people should honestly listen to this song right now the date here is Monday June 1st, 2020. My sister thinks this song is not going to help anyone right now. I think otherwise. We are all the same. We are humans. In the end there is nothing different about us. Our color or race doesn't matter. We need to love each other an help each other. We need to be FRIENDS NOT ENEMIES. We are not better than one another we are the same. So why fight. We need answers.

The white people dont see my people as humans. Nor do they see anyone who is black or brown. They never have. They probably never will. There are allies of course but many have always hated us, they stole the land almost wiped out a whole population of people. They kidnapped many children including Matoaka who is nicknamed Pocahontas who was a child bride. The natives are barley surviving. There offspring are called illegals. A border splits a family of people. Their is a war against them. Brown and black woman are going missing at an alarming rate and no cares. The song is beautiful but we can’t gaslight the truth like how they did with Matoaka’s story.

I love how this song addresses so many problems. It’s not just about race and ethnicity but also how we interact with nature and how we affect climate change and how we abuse it. It talks about claiming something or someone as ur own, when that is now the case and how it’s more beautiful being set free. It talks about how we need more empathy for others and how we are selfish. It talks about how disconnected we are from animals and how we should learn to treat them like family instead of just destroying their homes and locking them in zoos. It’s got so much packed into such an underrated and amazing song
@sophiefilo16
@sophiefilo16 2 жыл бұрын
It also has an anti-capitalist message, saying to appreciate things they way they are instead of only valuing what profit they can bring. There's also a message about understanding, listening, and observing. That bear you wanted to shoot might have a family. This tree might grow infinitely tall if you let it. Ask the grinning bobcat, and he might have an amazing story to tell you. There are so many themes packed into this short song that can't possibly all be caught on just the first or second listen. Every song in this movie has a deep message, but Disney really went all out with this one in particular...
@yelloe
@yelloe 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree thank you! But for some reason only the racism is what speaks to most people and get them riled up, instead of the other messages of the song. And this beautiful song isn't about racism at all either.. it's more about empathy and putting yourself in someone else's shoes so you'd get a different perspective. It's not only empathy towards other humans from different culture either, also with animals and the Earth as well. 🌎 Pocahontas is showing John her world so he'd see it in her eyes and have a new perspective.
@19cosmo91
@19cosmo91 Жыл бұрын
@@yelloe It isn't about racism at all? It's definitely not the only message but it is the 1st she refers to. "People that look and think like you," & "white or copper skinned," for example. It's negligent that people fail to hear the other problems addressed, but it's both negligent AND suspicious that you'd choose to negate that 1 specifically. 👀

@sophiefilo16 It has nothing to do with capitalism. Keep your socioeconomic garbage out of this. It's a beautiful song about unity and the beauty and wonder of nature. Leave economics and politics out of it, and just let it be a beautiful song that brings people together and gives them love for this incredible Earth we are so fortunate to live on.
@Digifan001
@Digifan001 Жыл бұрын
@@tonygalati2672 It can also mean about capitalism. Profiting from the earth and owning it as if it were just an object. When the last tree is cut and the last drop of water is gone, what is good for the rich to own money? This song captures all the problems of our modern society : racism, individualism, greed, academy stripping the beauty of nature by comparing it to numbers and complex formulas (confusing the map with the forest).

I prefer this version over the French translation (I'm French). This one is deeper, while the French one is more "poetic". But the French one has one verse that I think is a bit better. "You think people who are people, are the people who look and think like you, but if you walk in the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew." turned into something roughly translated as: "You think foreigners deserve the title of 'people' only if they look like and think like you. But when you walk in their footsteps, you're questioning yourself. Are you sure, deep inside, to be right?"

Actually, the English one has more meaning. The french one applies to foreigners and that it. However, the English one applies to anything that doesn't fit your idea of what's acceptable. it could apply to someone of another race, an animal, or simply that annoying neighbor you don't like. It's not telling you that you are wrong, but simply that you're not seeing the big picture. keep an open mind and you might see that that neighbor is not what you thought he was. It asks you to treat your fellow inhabitant of society, foreign or not, with a bit of humanity. The French version removes all subtext and subtlety from the passage.

I got a puppy the week Pocahontas made its premiere, which I attended. My puppy was bronze, feminine and beautiful--as was Pocahontas, so I named her Pocahontas--Pokey for short. Pokey crossed Rainbow Bridge 15 years later, but this song reminds me of her and hearing it makes me happy and sad at the same time. But it's likely only a dog lover or animal lover would understand that.

This is the best Disney princess song hands down. She understands herself and how she’s perceived. Painting with all the colors of the wind, means trying to understand others, because you can learn something you never knew you never knew. You don’t have to travel to do this either. Talk to someone you work with, a classmate, a neighbor. You don’t have to agree with them on everything but there is something you can connect with everyone. This song is not saying do what I say, this song is asking to see where you come from. It’s probably the best song I’ve ever heard about empathy.

These lyrics are even more relevant: "paint with ALL the colours of the wind", not just one. Maybe one day, people will realise that no one should be condemned because of their skin colour or ancestry, of which neither are a choice. Yet being born white instantly associates you with every atrocity that people have ever committed against another race. "You think I'm an ignorant savage? Still I cannot see that the savage one is ME"

@@elevenz367 No one seriously condemns white people for being born, and people certainly don't associate them with atrocities they've had no hand in. You missed the point of the song so that it can fit your victim complex agenda.

That sounds very unbelievable, no offence. You ran for miles, in only bandaged feet (where do you live if you don't have shoes?), alone, going where? Why the hell would you do that? I get that arguing with someone can feel unbearable but how would you even get back? What about your hunger and thirst, needs? And why would you need to mention the "moss on the pine forest floor" and watching the sunset? Which can take an hour or so. Sounds a bit romantisized for a story about running away. Without proof it's easy to doubt it. If you get mad now, calm down, because I'm only speaking the truth. It sounds like something someone would make up to attract attention. So be careful about how you word things and what you say on the internet. Oh, and you listened to this song specifically for hours, too? How? Did you have a phone but no shoes? Sounds incredibly ridiculous. Buy shoes first, then a phone.

The only way we can truly be free is if we all take care of each other and the earth. “And we are all connected to each other, in a circle, in a hoop that never ends”

You think I'm an ignorant savage And you've been so many places I guess it must be so But still I cannot see If the savage one is me How can there be so much that you don't know You don't know You think you own whatever land you land on The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim But I know every rock and tree and creature Has a life, has a spirit, has a name You think the only people who are people Are the people who look and think like you But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains Can you paint with all the colors of the wind Can you paint with all the colors of the wind Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth Come roll in all the riches all around you And for once, never wonder what they're worth The rainstorm and the river are my brothers The heron and the otter are my friends And we are all connected to each other In a circle, in a hoop that never ends How high will the sycamore grow If you cut it down, then you'll never know And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon For whether we are white or copper skinned We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains We need to paint with all the colors of the wind You can own the Earth and still All you'll own is Earth until You can paint with all the colors of the wind

I cannot put into words the impact this movie had on me as a child. For the first time ever, the princess and the “prince” did not end up together and I? It was not sad exactly, and it confused me to say the least (I was maybe 8) and I was just sat there astounded by everything the movie tried to convey. I think this was my first real “deep in thought” moment lol

As much as Pocahauntus Disney is not historically accurate. It has some of the most beautiful and deepest meanings. The combination of this song, just around the river bend, and savages really are still so meaningful for just being from a childrens show

As a Native American girl, I don’t like the movie Pocahontas-it romanticized and ignored a lot of very painful history that still effects natives for the sake of entertaining children and didn’t aid the misinformation still widely spread about the experiences of natives. But I can still appreciate that this is a beautiful song with a good meaning behind it Still, if u love this movie it would be good to learn about the real story and some of the harms this perpetuates

"You can own the Earth and still, all you'll own is earth until." Seriously I wish sometimes that I wasn't born just so that I wouldn't have had to long for what was lost. As a British person I sometimes hate my country sometimes, because of what we did in the past and what we are not doing to change now. I hope by the time I have children that I can bring them into a world that I am proud to call my home, but I don't know if that will be possible. It's an awfully sobering thought.

I've listened to this song all my life and i still get goose bumps every time i hear. My all time favorite Disney movie and Disney song! When i was little, and went to day care, my teachers would always put this movie on and everyone HATED it except me. All the kids were like, "UGH... I want another movie!!" and i just sat there, think, "how could this kid not like this?! This is genius." Gosh i love the movie. I think it's absolutely beautiful. I cry, and laugh. It's just wonderful. The music is beautiful, and even though it's a cartoon the scenes are beautiful. The waterfall, the nature in the forest, etc. I'm strongly agents discrimination and racism and things like that. I hate it when people make fun of other people based on who they love, their religion, their race, etc. This movie is not only beautiful by it's songs and scenes, it's also beautiful by it's meaning/lesson. :)

I sang this song in my history class in junior year with my friend and he gave us a dollar to stop ALSO! Since I was an agriculture major and had no desire to pay for expensive college tuition, I told my friend that I'd just live in the woods by Cobleskill dressed up as Pocahontas and sing "Colours of the Wind" every morning before class.

How many people actually stop to watch a flower grow? Or look at the sunset cast its beauty on the mountains? Sure, jobs are important. Life is important, but we often forget what is around us. Our focus is on people, not the world we live in. Trees, birds clouds mountains... they all fade away, and we forget to live. Keep your candles on
