In 1966 Pocher models of Italy released their first 1:8 scale model car, the 1907 Fiat, which has won the Grand Prix de France.
Arnaldo Pocher was a well know modeler who was best known for train models which were released and sold in America as Rivarossi and AHM. But Pocher wanted to develop the worlds most detailed automotive models in the large 1:8 scale. Monogram Models in the US had had great success with their 1:8 scale models proving there was a market for these huge models. The Fiat is about 18" long.
This was Pochers first kit, and very successful. Pocher went on to release several more models in this size, their next project being 2 Alpha Romero 2300cc sport-racing cars.
In in 1970s TYCO took over distribution in the US, but soon found model kits that sold for between 100-200 dollars difficult to sell and dumped all the inventory into K Mart stores, selling them for 20 cents on the dollar. This crippled US sales for a time, but also introduced many to these models, and soon Pocher sales in the US were better than ever. In later years they developed 25 cars before moving in a new direction, offering a truck and a line of modern super cars.

Great story and somewhat mirrors mine! I lived in Clearwater Florida in the 70s and had previously purchased and built this model for around $125.00. I happened to be in a K-Mart one day and couldn't believe what I was seeing - this kit for around $35.00. I thought it must be priced wrong, but bought it anyway. I gave my original one to one of my insurance agents as I liked him and he was a good agent for my company. Well, I built the second one from K-Mart and did an even better job finishing and detailing it. I think that was around 1975 or so, and it is sitting right here next to me as I post this, 46 years later! I had to replace the leather straps as they dried out and fell apart! It was a few years before I found out what happened to the importer, Tyco. Sure wish I had done what you did and buy a whole bunch of them, but, as they say, hindsight is 20/20! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. As a sidebar, I always pronounced it Po-Sure and never was corrected. I hear you say 'Poach-er'. According to a good Italian friend, I find that the correct pronunciation in Italian is just like the card game, Po-ker! I recall building the Alfa Romeo Spider Touring kit and either lost or was short a small part, and took a chance at writing to them asking if I could purchase the missing part. A few weeks later I get a small package in the mail from Italy with 2 of the parts enclosed, and a business card from the owner that said "with our compliments!" That was from the original founding family, and I have to say, I was very impressed.

I was working at Kmart '66 to '67 as a stock boy while a senior in high school and freshman in college. The store put these models out on a end aisle for about $20 each. I couldn't afford them but I bought the four models they had; K70, K71, K72, and K73. I traded the K72 with a friend but I still have the other three that I plan to assemble not that I'm retired. Enjoyed your video.

Oh my! Now I know the rest of the story. 45 plus years ago, I was at the Kmart store on N. Grand St. in Springfield Illinois and found both the Fiat and the Alfa kits in the hobby department for an unbelievable price and I just figured that it was a mistake. I'd seen the Rolls kit featured in a magazine several months earlier and the price for that kit was in the hundreds but here were these two kits for 20-something bucks each. Anyway, I snatched up one of each and I still have them today. Thank you so much for posting this video - I never knew until now why these kits were sold so cheaply. I'd love to have the Rolls.

Hi Karen and Dale, I really enjoyed this video as always you shared some very interesting information. I was wondering if you have any Of Reveille’s Aircraft Model Kits in your collection? My home was about a quarter of mile from the factory and my Aunt worked for them for many years. I would sure enjoy seeing some of their model kits again. Anyway lets all keep screwing around and having fun. My best to you both!

Hi! I don’t think so. Oddly I have some stuff up and I’m not sure what it is. Hasagawa (not sure of spelling) made some WW I aircrafts in 1:8 scale the we will cover. Super early comet models in both wood and plastic. Reveille made some huge 1:48 bombers and I built 2 of them as a kid. So hum.. don’t have any (I don’t think) but it would be cool.

I do love a turbine!! Have 4 here. The 3 unit coal, an 8500 HP gas a steam turbine and a 6500 HP Veranda. Only the steam is 100% finished. The coal has no lights or windows and no green. So till in need of some finishing paint. The 8500 need lights and electronics. BUt otherwise finished. The Veranda is in real need! Hate the color, so want to repaint the armor yellow, remoter and al new drive shafts, (it has 4) and electronics and sound..... HUM.... Big projects.

Dale I know you did this video a while back. But today I recently acquired this a fiat 130 grand prix de France 1907. It’s in yellow box with a picture of the finished car on it. It seems to made by UPC side label says: UPC construction kit N. 6090 , Turin - made in Italy. Problem is the car is not complete. It’s missing the main frames parts and wheels and tires as I far as I can tell. Question is any idea of the value of it. I also acquired a 1/12 Mercedes ssk in box it’s unbuilt as this time. What is the approximate value of these. If I could post a picture I would Thanks Hmsjr

Some more background on the early years of Pocher that confirms some of my memories of them as a train maker of note until around 1970. Likely more outside the USA. www.rivarossi-memory.it/POCHER/Pocher_Storia.htm (translate option helps). They actually started in 1952 exclusively making model trains in Turin. Some were very high end and expensive. eg the first loco announcement in 1958 was the CC7107 Mistral locomotive at two weeks wages or so for the average Italian. Fresh from the real SNCF CC7107 205mph high speed record run stunt in March 1955. So complicated it took until 1962 or 63 to get to market it seems. Cars started only in 1961 when Fiat asked Pocher to make the 1:13 scale model of the new FIAT 1300 car. Fiat being another Turin company of note. However Pocher continued making model trains. One aimed at the US market was the 1964 release of the Pocher Genoa. Some discussion on boards of early Pocher USA models being sold in the US. Many later produced by Rivarossi, but the Lincoln funeral car seems rare. However the demand for other non train models was seen and catered for. From 1963 Rivarossi, from far away Como, brought a share of the company but not controlling. This was due to a Pocher partner pulling out and selling his interest. Pocher continued with ambitious production increasingly mainly of cars. A fire in 1972, and soon after the death at 39 by stroke of a key Pocher man, was a hard to take blow and in 1975 Rivarossi took over the entire company. This era post the Rivarossi takeover seems to be the period that many are most familiar with. In about 1965, as a young kid, I would look longingly at the expensive Pocher Wild West range of locomotives and rolling stock on display in the main model train in Melbourne Australia, the Model Dockyard. Could not afford them or any from the display cases of brass from Japan. Tri-ang from England and Australia was a stretch for me let alone Pocher or Tenshodo. There is some KZfaq coverage of the early Pocher only trains eg the CC7107 Mistral record breaker, that I could find and post if you wish. A very high specification model for 1958 that would impress many today. Hope this helps and is of interest to you and may prompt some more additions to your always interesting channel. John D

Hi. Gee wow thanks. Sooo much history there. It seem Pocher was part of the huge post war build out of Italy and really all of Europe. Italy was unique in that they were part of the axis yet not seen as the same at all as Germany. Post war Italy was a horrible place. And the scramble to get back on their feet opened the door to new products. New companies. No real money around but lots of skill. Lots of ideas. Pocher himself seems to have been quite the craftsman. Did much of the machine work on the HO models himself. That the early models don’t work well is mostly, I think, because of the technology of the day but also the lack of resources in Italy at the time. Today Rivarossi is respected and great models.

The big ones all had good “hobby shops”. And a pet department with tropical fish and birds.. every one had a macaw parrot for about $500!! A base model mustang was 2400. So like almost $6,000 today. They almost never sold one. Or K Mart’s had Mac and Captain. Became more like store mascots. But they were for sale.

Ahhh!!!!! The ole K Mart shrink wrap!! Years ago, people were inclined to go to stores, like Kmart and Grand Central, and open up boxes and packages, to see if the contents pleased them... that held true for their children as well.. LOL! I suppose it came with the territory, when stores like Kmart and Grand Central, did not have a sales clerk hovering over the customer like a newly hatched fly. "CAN I HELP YOU??????" "HERE! LET ME HELP YOU TRY THAT ON!!!" ..............No. Seriously. I have been putting on pants for years now... Go away. It could be a circus at Kmart.. especially around Christmas time! The toy isle resembled someones living room, shortly after opening presents on Christmas Eve/ Morning. However... It was rumored that those little mirrors located near the celling, had security people and cameras behind them.. So... The store manager would "Know" if you opened a package in the store.. or took a five-finger-discount of the merchandise! REALLY??? O-M-G! I got into sooo much trouble when I was around 9 years old.. In Kmart... In the toy isle.. My dad lost track of where I was, and knew that I would be in either: The Toy Isle.. or.. The Pet/Bird Department. Busted.... There I was, standing within view of one of those little mirrors, pulling faces, sticking out my tongue, wiggling my behind, and doing the Hokie-Pokie! I can just see some Kmart security person, behind that mirror, or watching the video monitor... eating a sandwich... while shaking their head. My dad was not amused. Those were the "daze"! ............ And Kmart.......... And shrink wrap!

Remember the TJ Max incident? Some kids had taken ALL the pillows, dog beds, throws, anything soft, and tossed in in one isle. And were using it as a "ball pit" So we pointed it out to a store employee. OH THE LOOK ON HER FACE!! Better than being run over by a pack of kids on bikes while shopping for produce. AH KIDS!!! ARUGGGGG!!! Parents...
