Pochisensei we can't judge other country for using it differently because we use their words differently (and likely) wrong, too.

tbf, you can differentiate between Japanese words that actually have wholesale been adopted into English, namely umami, karoshi and more recently isekai, and the words that are pretty much only used and understood by the weeb-community or are used as slang, like senpai, doujin... and until recently isekai. Not like most normal english-speakers would understand either kind, but there is a difference. Most of the Japanese phrases used by weebs also have more of a meme-meaning rather than seeing actual use, see her description of "senpai", pretty sure most anime-fans somewhat get the original meaning, but the main way they themselves would use it is just for "notice me, senpai"-memes.

It does make me wonder though. With how connected everyone is globally now and humans naturally wanting to be able to communicate with eachother will we see a collective language form out of the internet, taking aspects from all languages and merging into one mass of words that everyone speaks after 100 or 200 years

I don't see a problem with that. I mean Japan uses English words more often in anime without it being the stereotype American character saying it. Just keep it to joke fun and nothing serious people

It's different. Japan uses English words for what they are because they don't have an equivalent for it though there's nothing wrong with languages borrowing from others as it helps communicating a lot easier.
@andrewli6606
@andrewli6606 20 күн бұрын
@@RejectHumanityReturn2Monkea ton of Japanese loan words already had native Japanese equivalents. Like there was a native word for soup before suupu and juice before juusu. And it’s not like their language is incapable of making up new words. Baseball isn’t beesubooru; it’s yakyuu.

To add on to this, there are also foreign loan words that take on a new meaning in Japanese. The Japanese word for part-time job is "arubaito". It's a German word, "arbeit", which means job and not part-time job. @@andrewli6606

3:23 reminds me of the time that my aunt hung a giant tapestry that said "Yaoi" with two guys on it above her living room and she just had no idea what the hell it meant 😅 Once I told her to search it for herself the tapestry _vanished_ 🤣🤣 In the same vein you can't blame Pochi for your own lack of research on what it is you're tagging/boosting...but it wouldn't be the first time that kinda thing has happened...

0:11 Tbf, with the growth of VTubers and whatnot (plus some forms of media translating "senpai" as "senior"), I feel like the meaning of "senpai" in English is slowly merging back with the original meaning to an extent lol 0:19 I feel like with "hentai", the original meaning of "pervert" hasn't fully come across yet. It's mostly still used to mean "erotic anime" in English afaik 0:33 I honestly wonder how "umami" was borrowed into English, especially since it didn't seem to come directly from the anime community. I first learned about it when education systems across the world were shifting from the traditional 4 basic tastes (sweetness, saltiness, sourness, and bitterness) into the modern 5 basic tastes (the previous 4 + umami, although "savoriness" is sometimes used instead)

right...here in Indonesia too, when the word "Doujin" appeared many people straight up think it is about Hentai Manga. Like imagine there's an announcement about a convention with Doujin Festival as a name, the comment section will be "Now they sell & will display lewd things & segs comic publicly?!" Then there always will be people reply them with the meaning of Doujin, lol

For someone who is on the internet a lot, she doesn't seem to understand meme culture. People will use and misuse images or videos for any purpose really. They will use some Hitler quote to relay a message (whatever it may be). They don't really care about the backstory of a meme. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense.

In the past few years, there are more fans in the west thanks to the Vtubing industry, but also big anime studios bringing out big manga hits in to streaming platforms. All happend because we had this epidemic problem. Also the gaming industry is somehow going east with the theme.

like another commenter said, she probably got that from the "notice me senpai" meme, and assumed thats the main context in which its used in english even with the mass availability of the internet in the year of our lord 2024, japs often still have a hilariously bad understanding of how jp pop culture is received over here
