Outside, no one knows that you are actually filming great stuff with such a tiny object like the pocket, do the same with a phone and the people will notice, also the mic of the pocket, is amazing when you can recreate a moment with the real sound of the moment, is amazing, cheers bro!

Very good test. I'm wondering if I should buy a pocket 2 as well. Actually, I have a oppo find X5, which has an excellent camera. But the microphone is not very good especially in windy conditions. Maybe should I buy just a usb c microphone to plug on my smartphone?

I dunno... probably not really, unless you have some very very good light.. bigger sensors would do a better job, prob the iPhone 12 / 13 would even be better in low light

For me, the Pocket delivers good quality while offering creative possibilities that no phone can equal. Not least is the ability to have the viewfinder facing one way while the lens is facing another, which makes framing high or low shots very simple. All phones have lens and screen locked together. And that's just the start of what a gimbal camera offers.

I guess all you can do is set the exposure compensation lower, and bring up the shadows in post.. maybe try d-log.. it tends to overexpose and clip the clouds

ITs not bad Michael, you have expensive taste though, I was pretty impressed with it .. and Yes, its still a phone, and it has a very nice and bright screen, I think overall the pocket is a gimbal camera so its different

For shy vloggers like me i find the pocket to be less conspicous i am not nervous at all to vlog in public, with the iphone its really obvious and for that alone id go with the pocket 2

Loved this comparison. I took a year, a while back and sold all my aging camera gear on Ebay and tried to ebrace the conept that the best camera gear is that which you have with you when there are shots to be had. Invested in a flagship smartphone.... thinking since my phone was always with me maybe I would be more apt to do more with photography if I didn't have to lug around a lot of heavy gear. As a result, I got a year of mediocre photos and video clips using smartphones (apple and android) that tried to be something they weren't meant to be, and had become worse at being what they were supposed to be.... a phone. I have spent the better part of the last year buying newer (best I can afford) single purpose camera equipment and am thankful that canon, and dji, and goPro haven't tried to turn their cameras drones and action cameras into phones.

Well said Wilson, Great comment, I have never sold off all my gear like you, but I have sold an upgraded certain things over the years.. but I did sell a lot of Drones. Interesting that you didnt really get the kind of video you wanted using a phone, I think there is something about having a camera, or even Osmo Pocket in your hand that makes you think or film differently, maybe its just the panning you can do, or the circular shots you can get around an object, hard to do with a Phone, and I hate Smartphone Gimbals !! The big win for the iPhone is dynamic range. The fact that it can do HDR in 4K without any compromise on quality / crop is great. If the Pocket 2 could do that it would be perfect.

Thanks Darcers Tech, I agree tends to handle the highlights better , but some people like the Color on the P2, but I prefered the Pocket 1 colors, not sure, the iPhone looks very Go Pro, but still very impressive for a Phone to compete so easily with a purpose built camera.. thanks for watching !

Great video, How to Guy! Image quality is important, but I like the idea of having a dedicated camera to capture content. I've had a bunch of situations where I'm trying to record videos on my phone only to be interrupted by an incoming phone call or text or some other alert that distracts from the capture. Pocket 2 for the win! Keep up these awesome videos!! :)

What sent me down the DJI Pocket 2/Osmo Action rabbit hole is that when I had my iPhone on a gimbal or selfie stick, it was *very* annoying when I needed to use my phone.

PeteTheGreek, I dont think I would be able to use a phone to Vlog / Film .. its too cumbersome, but the screen is nice and big, and I guess its got a nice Zoom.. but the pocket 2 is very practical and easy to use almost anywhere in Crowded places.

Thanks for the video. I had Pocket 2 on order, and canceled it after your review. The Pocket 2 footage looses so much detail in the highlights, all I see is white sky (1:42). I'd hate to give up the HDR processing I get with my Iphone, so I decided to get a phone gimbal instead. Cheers!

Etischer .. Fair enough, nice thing is you can make your own choice about what you like / cant deal with.. The clipping in the sky is weird, sometimes it can be fixed with exposure compensation :)

Wish I'd come across your channel sooner, you've got a new sub! Maybe you could answer this question: would the Pocket 2 be useable for real estate videos? I'm running a full gimbal with a Nikon z6 for the more premium video's, but I need something easy but with good quality for the more standard walkthrough video's. Could you recommend the Pocket 2 for this? Or do your think it would just not cut it? Thanks anyway!

Nando.. I don't see why not.. You can get 20mm shots and 15mm... Make art now did it with the pocket 1.. Its not awesome in low light, but its good enough with well lit rooms.. I think that's every people do in your industry anyway.. Its good enough for that.. Even as a b cam

Which is fine, but obviously realtors can't expect the best quality if they won't pay. So the Pocket 2 seem like that nice middleground. Good quality in an easy to use (and carry) package. Because I use an iPhone 7, I was going to upgrade before Christmas to an iPhone Pro Max, mainly for the 1" censor. I ended up decided to wait to see what comes out at the end of this year. I use LumaFusion on an iPad for editing so it's also a convenience thing. I just find I like iphones since my daughter give me her old iPhone 5, still works great tbh. I have had different camera's over the years but hey, I find I actual do more video recording and taking photographs with my phone, it's simple and it works for me enough that I'm pleased. 👍

Hello Martini, I dont thinnk the Pro Max has a 1 inch sensor at all, I agree with you though the iPhone is a good phone, Also I find it hard to get the files off onto my comptuter, its much easier to get the files off the Pocket or my Sony camera onto the PC... I dont know if Im doing it wrong via the USB-C port, its very slow, it doesnt allow me to copy multiple files, its very slow.. maybe you know a trick. Thanks for watching, Im hoping we see a 1 inch Gimbal or we will probably see a 1 inch smartphone coming out soon !

@@HowToGuyChannel I move them easily to my ipad for editing in LumaFusion then move them using USB to my PC by opening up the files in the iPad and transfer simple and quickly, no iTunes or anything like that. You can use software ( free depending on what you want ) called send anywhere on your PC and app for the iPhone, if you use the cloud to transfer it's pretty quick. The iPhone 12 Pro max you reckon doesn't have a 1" censor? I think it only works with the main camera and one lens.

Very nice comparisons. I shot alot of mobile films and I tried the pocket2. I love it. It has everything that I wanted in a compact setup. Though the iphone isn't a slack either. Thanks for sharing. Nicely done!

Thanks Ron, Yeah... the pocket 2 is much easier to use as a Film Making tool, but Yeah the IPhone did pretty well, but I get annoyed with getting files off the iPhone onto PC.. takes too long so its not practical for filming videos

What do you suggest if I want to buy iPhone 13 pro for real estate indoor videography compared to pocket 2, is there any major difference because iPhone is too much expansive is it worth it ?

Good question, I havent tested the 13.. I would say the low light on the IPhone is pretty impressive, and in some ways I think better than the Pocket 2, I think the sensors are the same , so in theory they are going to be the same, I think the iPhone has better algorithms for noise reduction and brightening up things... so probably better for dark real estate... Just buy the sony a7siii instead ;)

I actually like the iPhone video and there are some spectacular filming apps that make it a much better experience than with the default app. I have a 12 Pro Max. That said, I HATE the usability of filming with a phone. It’s better with a phone gimbal, getting the files off of the phone is a pain compared to taking out a micro SD, editing on the phone is a pain, And finally, occupying your phone with filming while doing other things gets tedious quite quickly. The perfect camera to be now would be the 1” camera from the DJI Air 2S in a similar form factor to the Pocket 2. I have tried filming with it at ground level and it’s quite nice!

Andrew... sorry for the slow Reply :) Longer comments, I leave till last :) You have that phone, so you know its pretty good :) but I agree, Its hard to film with a phone, I CANT believe how hard it was to get the files onto my PC, biggest fail by Apple, I dont know if there is an easier method. I agree the Air 2S is what we have been campaigning on this channel for, if they can get that right (and they have the Technology) .... they would create a very popular product

I’ma videographer and I’ve always thought iPhone video looks “shallow”. It’s hard to explain but the lens flares are also awful. I much prefer the Pocket 2, It’s a great camera for such a tiny thing

Never met a real videographer before, so do you actually do that for a living.. 😊 pocket 1 and 2 did a petty good job for their size.. Image almost looks like an apsc sized camera sensor

@@HowToGuyChannel i’m a videographer/editor by trade and have worked for large broadcasting companies as well as independent productions and freelance. Was never a fan of iPhone videos, there’s lagging issues, flares and judder that’s annoying to professionals. Plus I hate using phones to shoot with haha. Not to mention the selfie camera is horrible on the iPhone - with the Pocket 2 I can finally vlog with good quality. I love my bigger cameras but I like having the choice of using the pocket 2 for travel and hiking as well. Image quality is fantastic for such a small footprint

Those flagship phones do so much image manipulation and tone mapping that basic consumer grade devices like Pocket 2 simply can't keep up. It is evident in difficult lighting conditions where Pocket 2 simply blows up the sky in order to keep the foreground properly exposed. The only way to amend this is to record in log and colorgrade in post. And still iPhone footage will look better regarding the dynamic range

@@HowToGuyChannel oh, I thought you do record in those fancy LOG profiles on Sony A7sIII, as well as on Pocket 2. I don't have those devices anyway. Neither do I have an iPhone. But this is what an average consumer probably notices immediately - video recorded with a modern smartphone usually has sky (highlights) kept from getting blown out, while on dedicated devices like Pocket the sky is blown every time the subject is in the shadows. So the average consumer will choose a smartphone over a dedicated device if it is the only thing which influences his choice (image quality/dynamic range). So I hope that DJI and other manufacturers will work on postprocessing algorhytms and what not to make the image look more akin to flagship smartphones. The technology is there, what they need is proper software...

you need to shoot the cine flat profile on the pocket and fix it on post. Without that the hdr on the iphone will appear better at managing highlights and shadows.

Sullenday, I would have to test that.. Iv never been a huge color grading expert on the Pocket, I do it on the Sony, not sure the pocket offers much better dynamic range in cinelike, but I COULD BE WRONG !!!

I have and iPhone 11 Pro Max and a Pocket 2 and I definitely prefer the Pocket 2 for vlogging. I do not use the Pocket 2 for photography. I find it a little awkward to use for that purpose.

Thanks for the comparison, hopefully this video gets a lot more views. I made a few videos with an iphone 8 and a dji osmo gimbal, but it didn't perform the way that I was expecting. When walking it would cause a weird translation/shift with each step. That's what brought me to your channel. It's also a pain to get filters for the iphone - gotta have a special case. It looks like some of that stuff has been sorted out in the 12 and probably is better with the osmo 3 or 4. The iphone has great software and I think that the colors are better than normal color profile on the pocket 2. But in the end, the Pocket 2 is for a slightly different audience.

I think someone mentioned the phone is a great viewfinder for the Pocket 2, but leave it at that.. I think the Pocket 2 does better, we potentially have a new camera coming up so stay tuned, Im not allowed to speak about it, but I think you might find it interesting ! I agree, the colors are better, and its more practical to use

@@HowToGuyChannel I've had heating with the 11 pro max but actually never had any issues like that with the 12 PM. I think all iPhones overheat sometimes if overused but It's usually easily fixed by closing out all the apps and letting it cool down.

I get a lot of iPhone camera weirdness when I'm running low on memory. Aside from that, a restart might help. Although, that weird camera stutter looks like a cool special effect! haha

Got a question for you HowToGuy, it’s about the Pocket 2’s gimbal mechanism. I’ve had mine as long as you and love it dearly, but the gimbal still exhibit this strange wobble that I feel when using it. Something that I don’t experience with my older Osmo Pocket. Phillip, I must say that is weird.. I do have issues with the Roll Axis when in Follow Mode, and Correct me if Im wrong.. but Roll axis should be locked on Follow mode, mine doesnt, it drifts a little from side to side.. I cant think what could cause your issue, but I would make a short video about it, and contact DJI Live chat support, if you are able to capture it doing that, perhaps with another zoom lens or something... I guess if your recorded video looks ok, then I dunno.. I know you have probably have latest firmware, and have "reset", calibrate the thing etc

Unfortunately I dont have access to another Pocket 2 for comparison other than my trusty old Osmo Pocket. Most of the stores that sell DJI products where I live dont have a full working demo😞

The iPhone 12 pro stabilization is actually very good. I have the Pocket 2 and the Hero9 but for fast content creation the built in processing and easy uploading from the iPhone it can't be beat.

Nice comparison. I'm a fellow Android hobo. I've never been an Apple fanboy. I do use an iPad provided by my company for work. But, I don't think I'll ever buy an iPhone. I will admit the camera on that phone did a really good job. The quality was great for a phone. It did seem to be a little bit more saturated and leaning toward warmer tones than the Pocket 2. So, depending on what color profiles you prefer, it would be ok. I don't like the high price for the iPhones, however. The Pocket 2 is definitely the best bargain. Anyway, great job as usual my friend!

Kevin, thanks Chief :) Nothing wrong with android, they alot cheaper, one issues I had with iPhone was copying the files for editing onto a Windows Machine, what a mission, took forever, at least on the pocket I can do that in about 15 min, this took about 1.5 hours.. what the hell Apple ?? I agree though, I prefer the Pocket color, the iPhone looks too Go Pro sometimes.

There's a few places that the iPhone outperforms the pocket 2, however that phone is expensive as balls. The pocket 2 I think does better over all. Not bad for all that packed into a small camera :) getting mine tomorrow instead of an iPhone, I don't got that apple money lol! But great review man!

I agree with this assessment, pretty much what I found, plus the P2 is better at getting the files off, I found the iPhone painful to edit and get the files into my NLE.. The Pocket 2 is a good little tool for filming

@@HowToGuyChannel Yeah, I'm an Android guy too. iOS just seems to be the same plus a premium price on top. That said, I have an old iPhone I use for testing the Drone Pilot Canada app (I'm a co-developer and do the testing of new features), and even though it is old, it has a better 'feel' to it, and things are definitely more integrated and common, making it better for non-geeks I suppose. But is it worth it? Nah.

I Can't decide between the Pocket 2 and iphone 12 mini (they pretty close in price now). The Pocket 2 makes for great video, but you get a whole lot of extra goodies with the iphone, but... iphone lens flare and sensor reflections is something that is bugging me at the moment. BTW it's Matti 'Hapoya' and his video was a showcase of his YT skills, his editing skills, his kid... but not much use when comparing the Pocket 2 to a 2-3x expensive iphone! Your comparison much more useful!

I dunno, if you only want a phone, then Yeah, its pretty good in low light, its hard to get the files off the phone though, very slow, the pocket has that memory card, and you copy them to your harddrive, but I dunno.. I dont think the P2 is the best also, has some bugs and they havent released firmware for ages

Playing catch up on your videos. The wife's iPhone drowned while vacationing in Mexico. So we now have the iphone 12 to capture telephoto that my Pocket 1 isn't capable of. I too am waiting for the Pocket 3 with a 1" sensor.

Yes, I am waiting for Pocket 3 as well! Pocket 2 is good but it needs to do more and better on dynamic range, colours and getting rid of some tradeoffs like no 4k60p video & active track in High Quality mode, etc. Would be a plus if the Pocket 3 improves a bit on battery life and heat management as it gets pretty warm and that would become a problem in my place as the average room temp is around 30C

Pocket 2 takes some beating; it did slightly blow out some of the sky highlights but that may be just the pocket settings, The i phone 12 looked really cool to apart from the frame stutter and it didn't appear to blow any of the highlights out...Keep on using your pocket 2 and if you have both Happy Days...LOVE this channel Dude...Really look forward to all your Vlogs...Take Care..

@@HowToGuyChannel If you used a pro funtion on pocket 2 and use setting with extended dynamic range properly it would do much better, also if you add a ND to that it will look just very proffesional. iphone will be good for some people who just need to do quick but artifical looking videos but Pocket 2 is for real creators who know how to shoot and use setting and filters and post processing, color grading, etc. In such case Pocket 2 will produce a waaaaay better videos very natural, with better camera movement and better stabilization.

This review really makes the iphone 12 would be a much better choice than dji p2 in terms of colour science,HDR effect,and the bokeh with main camera.Dji need to work harder and put in more efforts other than just gimbal features.

I had to revisit some of your videos lol. I never bothered to purchase an iPhone 12 Pro Max yet but am considering a Pocket or Pocket 2. The Pocket can be had for around £195.00 at the moment and I like the 26mm lens compared to the 20mm on the Pocket 2. Decisions Decisions but I do need a better camera lol. I just flew my Mavic Mini a few days ago for the First time and I only recorded in 1080p but still really good, now I need similar ground footage 😆. Would you recommend just going for the Pocket 2 over the Pocket even though there's great deals on the Pocket at the moment. This video is one of the reasons why I decided not to bother with the 12 Pro Max last year. Cheers my friend 👍

I also have a Xiaomi 4k and several other drones including FPV so too much already invested ATM lol. I think any of the DJI drones are great to be honest but I think the Mavic mini 2 for what it can do for its weight and size is outstanding, amazing actually, one of those happy purchases 👍

Pocket is better only for daylight and iphone have way better microfone . For lowlight video there is no comparacy . Dont forget Iphone have HDR in 4k . Pocket is for some1 who dont have any requirements .

On the flip side, your face on the iphone is too redish and the constant sun flaring makes it for me completely useless. Been checking tons of reviews lately, your's included. The pocket 2 has much advantages than the iPhone 12 in my opinion in terms of camera perspective but of course there are things that pocket 2 doesn’t have that iPhone 12 does have so it’s better to have both. (Pocket 2 for shooting video, iPhone 12 for editing using lumafusion).

What I think is that the advantage of the mechanical stabilization will be greater during dark when optical stabilization in phones won't get the results as good as any mechanical gimbal. I think it would be worthy to update your video and add couple of minutes in dark ;) But thank you anyway. I think your videos will go viral

Great question, so with any software based stabilization (this is my understanding of it) .. it uses a buffer around the sensor to store movement, and compensate, Im not actually sure if iPhone uses this method, but Go Pro + Osmo Action do, I think I recall Go Pro had some sensor shift technology so it wouldn't loose sensor size to do the stabilization. Osmo pocket is mechanical so your sensor remains the same size.. so it would be at its best it could in low light.. Will try do another video on this :) I think thats my understanding of iPhone, will have to look into that... reading into this, iphone uses Optical Image Stabilization.. so it shouldnt loose any of the sensor, so low light would be at its best, just like a Gimbal

64MP images are just four 16MP images stitched together. 16MP is the camera's default resolution. iPhone looks great even though it leans to the warmer color but still prefer the Pocket 2 for any video.

Pocket has more natural colors, what your eye sees. the phone is enhanced color. its good if you like that. I think you spot on with this comment Marty, couldnt agree more, but its an interesting test, if we take away the fact that the iPhone costs an arm and a leg, and just look at the camera.. I think the Pocket still did better, not too mention tracking ability, better colors, Moving timelapse in body, and even Pretty good external sound without much hassel ..
