Leatherman Replacement
My leatherman Rebar is not UK legal carry as it has two locking knife blades. I looked at the tools it offers and tried to replace most of them - plus some extras - trying to match the weight and in a similar compact format. I used the Knipex pouch and a range of individual tools.
A big shoutout to @BenVallack and @todd.parker . Their videos gave me a lot of inspiration for this solution. Apologies for not putting the shoutout in the video itself - here are the links to their videos:

I lived in the UK, and I love it. London feels like my second home. When I was there, around 2001-2007, the knife paranoia was really ramping up. Signs on the tube urging people to rat out their mate if he's got a knife, etc. As much as I adore Britain, and the British, I'm grateful I live in a country that codified my right to carry the means to defend myself and my family. Having said all that, I really enjoyed this video. Very well done and thoughtful.

Thanks. I think due to our different histories and cultures we look at personal protection differently. Not having many guns in circulation makes life a lot safer here.

We don't have that many home invasions, assaults and kidnappings here in the Uk. The great myth of the gun lobby in the US - is that having guns freely available does not make people safer. Guns are needed for protection because guns are freely available. Fewer people are shot on purpose ( criminal activity) in the UK than children are shot by accident in the UK. I am not judging the US - or US citizens wanting guns. It is a different historical context and culture. Even if guns were banned - they would never be turned in.... We started from a differnt place in UK. I feel safer in the UK than when travelling in the US.

I have the same knipex pouch, and agree it is perfect for an EDC. One difference is that instead of using up one of the side bands to hold a pen, I have put a Wera 813R bit holder in there. It fits in the side of the pouch perfectly. And is just big enough to be an actually useful screwdriver.

I own most of those tools and use them in a variety of kits, from biking to motorcycle to camping, hiking and hunting. For EDC, I have carried so many different tools and knives since the 80's. I got my first Letherman (original PST) in 1990. I've since purchased many others, and other brands from Gerber to SOG. They all have homes in kits and vehicles because other than the original PST, they are more than I'm willing to carry. Today my regular EDC is the Leatherman Skeletool CX and Victorinox Alox Bantam. I need a knife, and the blade lock is often essential for safety. I also need screwdrivers and pliers. The Skeletool is light and small, the 154CM blade is tough and razor sharp. I have the Bantam for very light tasks and I do love the Alox series. I'm in the US, the blade lock ban for such a small (2.6 inch) blade would be frustrating. It's not much of a weapon and the lock offers the user a level of safety from injury. You've done well with this; I don't carry illegally either. For me the issue isn't only the weight, it's also the size.

Great choice. The Cobra XS steer very small. SAKs are all quality and you can pick the one that suits you for the day ahead. Always scissors for me and sometimes a saw.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 10 ай бұрын
Similar to what I've being doing since I discovered the utility of the Knipex Cobra, mine are the XS. I don't do pouches in general and just carry my ''toolkit'' in my pocket. As to SAKs you don't really need to worry about recommending a specific one, they're all good and people choose which one to carry depending on what they need, I often carry my Climber with the Knipex, sometimes Farmer X. Both have clips. Other times I carry an actual folder like the Spyderco Urban, and add the Vic Moneyclip for scissors, but any folder plus a 58mm Vic with scissors will do the job. If you want the file and woodsaw as well as scissors, blades, openers, awl etc. there is the Ranger but I rarely need a file. I tried a variety of drivers and perused a number of pricey EDC specific drivers but all have their shortcomings. Ratchets with the bit holder in the end of the handle so you can use it as an inline driver are the way to go if you want a range of capability. I bought the Sealey mini ratchet (also sold under the brand Sabrecut). But more often I carry the smallest Wera bit driver (813) which is about the size of a Clipper lighter, and not expensive at around £10. Sits nicely in the 5th pocket of my jeans with a 2 in bit extender and a couple of bits so I can use it as a regular driver or a stubby. If I want torque, the hex end of the extender slots in the jaw adjustment slot on the Knipex.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC 10 ай бұрын
Thanks - I wanted to give the saw option to match the Leatherman. but of course you are right - it depends on what sort of day you have planned as to what SAK you need. My pioneer X Alox is a great option and I always have the Midnite manager on me. Plus I have just discovered the somplicity of the Alox Bantam!
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 10 ай бұрын
@@MB_EDC Of course that's the great thing about Victorinox, they have lots of choices and make quality tools, and the price is very reasonable so many of us can afford to have a variety to carry according to what we are doing on a specific day or in a specific scenario e.g. city, home, work, camping, travelling etc. For the price of a Leatherman Wave which at present is £110 if you shop around, normally more, and the Charge, Surge, Free P4 cost more, you can buy a Pioneer or Farmer, plus a Huntsman, Super TInker, and a Manager, for example, and rotate or mix & mathch according to your needs.

Unfortunately the general anti-knife feelings and draconian laws are based on knife crime which is predominantly between young males. As a 60 year old grandfather I should be trusted to carry a locking knife without hurting anyone. It is the law so I stick to it. I have that same Victorinox driver/bit set. I find the L shaped adapter to be really, really slippery though making it difficult to use. I’ve replaced it with the 711L EDC ratchet. Intended for the bit adaptor on Leatherman tools, combined with the extender from that Draper kit. It fits perfectly in that little red bit holder along with all the bits I need. I have that in my EDC pouch for if I need it but could easily slip it into a little holster or have it loose in my pocket. I have a Rovyvon Aurora (I forget which) but it’s an older one that I’ve stuck some neodymium magnets too. This way it’s more usable for me, polycarbonate body so it’s very lightweight whilst still giving me what I need from a torch. In my pockets I’ve got a Victorinox Compact, I almost never use the knife but use every other tool (even the parcel hook!) as well as a rotation of non locking, sub 3” knives and a pair of XS Cobras.

Great video. On the Knipex case, the regular or 84mm? Swiss Army knife will fit in the red elastic side and a flashlight will fit on the other side and with the top closed they are 100% secure. That being said, IMHO, the path forward is the knifeleas rebar (with a separate knife) or bond or original PST or swisstool X other UK compliant multitool. I tried doing what you are trying and I went back. Though the voice is a tad tedious, the content is relevant if one is looking for a compact EDC that is UK Legal to carry. I personally include the Alox Victorinox - a) 'cos I have one and b) for the beefier blade & excellent awl. Fisher Space Pens are smaller than the Zebra, so that is a better option and a spare AAA Lithium (energizer) battery for whichever flashlight is chosen would be wise. Both O-Lite and LED Lenser make fine AAA-cell lights which fit the side pockets on a Knipex pouch. Finally - and most essential in such a kit - you should ditch the Knipex mini-Cobras and replace with another Knipex - who make the best pliers in the world - but in this case, a small Plier-Wrench. Expensive, but parallel, smooth jaws, immense grip, no surface marring and a great range of sizes. Their ONLY fault is - just like Leathermans - you Cannot buy just one...

Who needs a torch- there is one on your 'phone. Who travels without their 'phone?
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC 7 ай бұрын
True. But what if your phone battery is dead, or worse your phone is dead and it’s dark and you have dropped it somewhere? If there is a post you will want to not use your phone battery for light, but save it for essential calls. Try carrying a small torch on your keyring for a few weeks. I’m sure you’ll use it more than you think
@Tensquaremetreworkshop
@Tensquaremetreworkshop 7 ай бұрын
@@MB_EDC One can make the case (or at least a case) for a wide range of items to carry. However, what you are arguing for here is for a duplicate item. Surely that has a higher hurdle? Given that the smart 'phone has effectively replaced (as a 'must carry') the wallet, loyalty cards, compass, notepad, camera, map, tickets, travel card and a host of other things, is not battery management already a key to normal life? It is difficult to drain a battery in a single day (mine rarely gets below 88% when I put it on my night charger) and EDC is exactly that- the D stands for day. If travelling for longer, one is normally carrying luggage for other needs, and the inclusion of a backup battery is, for me, standard. You should rejoice- elimination of all the above from your pocket expands the other things you can carry- just in case.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC 7 ай бұрын
@@Tensquaremetreworkshop I think that some duplication is good. Reliance on one device for so many things is a risky strategy. Risk assessment and strategy is a personal preference. For me - I choose to carry an additional torch, wallet with minimal cards and some cash, knife/scissors (when not flying) and a couple of other items. When I fly I print my tickets and make sure I have additional ID. Small duplications which generally ensure that my day and trip go smoothly.
@Tensquaremetreworkshop
@Tensquaremetreworkshop 7 ай бұрын
@@MB_EDC Duplication displaces primary. Do you keep a log of when/how you use EDC items? And when you did not have an item that you could have had? And occurrence of failure that required the duplicate? You say that you do risk assessment - that requires data. More likely you carry what makes you emotionally comfortable- and that is fine, but not the basis of a logical analysis of need. You have expended the effort to produce a number of videos on the subject, how logical to base that on established record rather than guesswork and surmise. Yes, when you are travelling the additional weight/space of a ticket is trivial to the rest of your luggage. (They are actually a thing of the past- I have not been issued a paper ticket for years. They know you are coming.)That is NOT everyday ( I assume...) and the subject is EDC.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC 7 ай бұрын
@@Tensquaremetreworkshop Duplicate displaces primary is a minimalist view that is not applicable in all cases. EDC is a personal choice and mine changes daily depending on what I am doing. My EDC is different when flying compared with when working from home, being in the office or at weekends. I have not fully monitored how often I use each item but for the key items I can estimate: Midnite Manager 1-2 uses per day. Keychain torch 2-3 times per week, Gerber Shard (keychain tool) 1 per week (more often when flying as leave MM at home) other tools I carry as needed depending on my day.

I'll be honest; mini saws are useless unless you need a very clean cut on something. Anything small enough to be cut by a victorinox saw is small enough to be placed at an angle and snapped with a good stomp. If you need something to process small wood you're better off looking at dedicated saws like a silky or a hatchet.
@MB_EDC

@@Xtopher822 sometimes the best tool is the one you have with you. Only just started using this saw. The one on the Hercules - which I have used a lot is brilliant. Because the Victorinox saws cut on the pull and the push they work really well. Better than you would think for their size.

"If you carry a knife it needs the ability to close on your finger." I don't agree with the laws, but I understand the reasoning, except for locking blades. How are those worst than nonlocking?
@MB_EDC
