I'm a teacher (16 years strong) and I'm so inspired by all your energy and dedication to your class. It broke my heart when you started crying. Don't worry about the observation. It happens. I cried a lot my first years of teaching and still have some observations that don't sit well with me. Admins only see a small glimpse into your classroom. You know what you do. Carry that with you. Next year, invite your admin to your transformation days. I respect your honesty and showing the real side of teaching.

Girl.... in my 13 yrs of teaching, the pop in observation has happened several times at the worst moments!!! But the best ones always outweigh the worst. I have learned to invite the admin in my room when there is something I want them to see. It may seem like a brown noser but it is not. That is the only way to make sure they see it.... even if they cannot make it in, they know it is going on! Also, if a parent loves you and keeps mentioning it, ask them to write you a letter of reference. I have done that a few times... especially with students w specific needs!

I'm a first year teacher, and I just wanted to tell you that I think you are an AWESOME teacher. I totally understand the frustration you're feeling. Just remember that your students are the ones that you should be doing all of the extra stuff for, not administration. If you keep doing what you're doing, administration will know. I just think you're great and keep up the awesome videos!

You are definitely not the only one that feels this way. Many of us put our whole hearts into teaching and do everything in the interest of our students. Then for it do go unnoticed and especially to feel like we got "caught off guard" sucks!! I have been there many times. But just seeing how much you care and the passion you put into your teaching on a daily basis, it definitely shows. Even in a moment when you don't feel like your best teaching self, your principal knows you are awesome. Keep up the great work and all will be fine.

Thank you so much for keeping it real. As a first year, full time teacher (para jobs 2 years after degree), this year has been beyond a struggle. When I first found your vlog I thought "wow, I should not even watch this because I know I won't be there." I teach 5th grade which is intermediate in my district in DE and content specific. The area I work in is very similar to yours demographic wise. Seeing your frustration, as well as redirections honestly has helped me more than you will ever know. I cannot thank you enough.

Hi, first year 1st grade teacher here. I had a bad observation today from my principal and I haven't known what to do with myself. I decided to hop on youtube to see if there was any videos under "bad teacher observation" that might make me feel better (weird, I know). I came across this video and when I got to the part when you cried, I started bawling with you. That is EXACTLY how I feel. I am a perfectionist, but for whatever reason (just life, I guess) the lesson flopped. It KILLED me to have admin see that. I put so much work into my classroom. Thank you so much for making me feel like I'm not alone. Please never quit posting videos. You are changing so many peoples lives. Thanks again

I find myself smiling while watching your videos. I am a retired elementary teacher, and your days are so much like I remember. Your organizational skills are amazing. Another thing I admire is you do not attempt to reinvent the wheel by producing all of your own templates and charts. You have taken the time to find things others have designed and edit them to work for you. Bravo! Don't be ashamed or embarrassed when the frustration overwhelms you. It shows that you care about what you do, and you are absolutely justified in being disappointed when your efforts are not recognized. Continue your high expectations for your students, but just like you give them grace when they fall short, do the same for yourself. Some days it's taco salad, and some days it's chocolate cupcakes!! You need both in your life.

In Puerto Rico we have a holiday to celebrate when the wise men visited Jesus, it's called "Three Kings day" and its on January 6th. So teachers don't return to work from Christmas vacation till after January 6th. Usually around the 8th, and students start a day or two later. Our holidays are one of the reasons why I don't think I'd want to be a teacher in the states. I complain about my job as a teacher a lot, but when I hear teachers from the states talk about what is expected of them, I realize I should be thankful. I leave the school after 5:00 but that's because I tutor. Once my work hours are over they are OVER! I can't imagine leaving and then coming back at night to fix things up in the classroom.

I have been binge watching all of your videos and you are so inspiring.. I have been texting for 15 years and you have made me excited for another year to start.. you are one to the teachers that goes above and beyond for your students and it broke my heart for you to feel like your administration doesn’t see all your time and effort! Observations can be so nerve wrecking and especially an unannounced one on the 2nd day back from break is awful. Give yourself grace and know that is only a small glimpse into your day and relationship with your students. Sometimes we do things and no one even notices but God does.

You are doing an amazing job and spend so much time getting everything ready for your students. You can tell that you care so much for them and want them all to succeed. I can not believe how long y'all are in school. Our school day starts at 8:40 am and dismissal is 2:10 pm and we have a recess (15 minutes) and a lunch break (30 minutes). Just remember you are doing a great job and you are appreciated :) I am still a substitute (for the past 11 years, not by choice, the way our system is there is just no jobs, declining enrollment paired with lack of retirements, I am sure you get the picture) but when I do get a class again (I have had my own in the past) I hope to be organized like you :) Chin up sweetie!! Hugs!

You are doing a fantastic job! I went to school for Elementary, but wound up in Middle & now High School and believe me your planning is unbelievable compared to the upper grades! I shake my head with how much lesson planning you have, and I give you the utmost credit for all the enthusiasm you have! I get tired just watching you! Don't worry about your observation - it happens to all of us! I am in my 17th year in an Urban District and everyone of us teachers have had the same thing happen when the principal walks in. Any good principal knows there is more to your teaching and classroom management than what they see in a 40 minute observation. Keep your head up! You are a fantastic teacher who cares about her students. Keep up the great work!

I've just discovered your channel and I'm addicted. While I'm a I/S teacher, I find I have a lot in common with you. With regards to your observation, truly I would guess that the principal surprised you in that "down" moment simply because they wanted to see how you manage when there's a last minute change. You worked off the fly and that's impressive. Don't overthink it. I bet the principal was impressed.

Oh my goodness! I got a new student right after break too and they scheduled testing for my class as soon as we came back to school also. I can't believe you have unannounced observations I've never worked at a school with unannounced observations. When I taught in MD I taught at a small Montessori private school so I didn't have to deal with that. I've taught in HI and MD and now I'm teaching in WA and I have two observations a year but they are scheduled. HI was the same way, they scheduled observations. I'm so sorry that happened to you. As if teachers don't have enough stress that made it much worse. It was almost like it was planned to cancel your testing and see if you can teach on the fly. It sounds like you did your best. I really enjoy your videos because you truly show how teaching really is. Keep your head up, you're an amazing teacher!!!

Oh girl...I feel ya! I feel like administration always walks in at the worst times 😳 My formal observation is coming up and my principal said she will be popping in here and there before then (which makes my anxiety go through the roof) I'm also a 3rd year teacher...although here in Kansas we don't have tenure anymore so technically no teacher is ever "safe." But if your administrator is understanding and you explain what happened with your schedule, they def need to cut you some slack!! When you broke down I could 100% relate. I think all great teachers have felt that way! Keep your head up...you're fabulous! We teachers need to support one another.

From a semi-outsider, I do NOT think you're doing less than your best. I know that might not mean much but when you do the math you work pretty much 15-18 hours a DAY and to feel like you're not a good teacher or doing enough just because you didn't have an amazing plan when your testing was cancelled doesn't mean anything! Honestly, what a dumb time for the VP to come observe. I feel so much for you guys and when my agency has meetings all we do is talk about how on earth we can support teachers when they're expected to work a million hours and be on 24/7 and not really engage in any self care. Anyway, I'm going to step off my soapbox but just wanted you to know how hardworking and passionate it obviously shows that you are.

On your Scholastic Reading Club website, go to the Teacher's Desk tab and you can print a letter to parents with the class code and personalized due date! it also gives them instructions. I staple it to the front every month, much easier than writing it!!

I have a quick thought/suggestion. When you have something terrific to show off (like your transformation) make sure you do show it off and invite your principal to come and see what you've done. This does a couple of things: shows your enthusiasm for your teaching and your preparedness and gets your principal to see the good stuff which is sometimes missed.

I have definitely been there myself when it comes to getting observed. We do so many amazing activities but the time that we don't have it 100% together is when administration decides to come in and observe. I think you did a wonderful job with your one word activity. You inspire me!

I am a first year teacher and it has been an adjustment to say the least. I was hired 1.5 weeks before school started and I couldn't even get into my room to prepare until 5 days before school began. Like you, I am use to being on top of things all the time. This year has completely flipped that ideal. I am learning to accept that things will not go as planned from time to time. There are days where I feel like I hit it out of the park; however, there are other days where I go home, crash, eat a quick meal, and cry as I fall asleep. I have learned so much about myself through these times. In fact, I came across your channel when I needed encouragement. I watched your video that was aimed at encouraging teachers. What I have learned from everything is to not dwell on the mishaps! We all mess up. It isn't fun, but it happens! It doesn't mean we are less of a great teacher. As long as we go to school with the aim of pouring into our students, we succeed. I am slowly starting to take that advice! Keep your chin up! You got this! :)

Hi There! I have been teaching for 10 years in an inner city school. I can totally relate to you in so many ways. My first six to seven years of teaching I felt like I didn't have a life and I was constantly at school. I went in early and left late all the time and still I felt like I never had enough time. I have also experience the unannounced observations when I wasn't totally prepared. It's a stressful feeling for sure. Based on your videos though... you are soo organized and your room is in great condition! I think you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself. You have a lot of heart and it's obvious that you love what you do. Don't be so hard on yourself and remember to find time to relax. Also, have the students help you! Teach them to tally up the Class Dojo points or do various jobs that will help you. It's not easy to relinquish that control...I was there...but it you have students that can handle it...let them do more of these tasks. It will help you out in so many ways. Also, don't be afraid to send an email to your principal letting them know of the great things that are happening in your room. They have so many things going on too. I bet they'd love to know and see all the great things that are happening. I hope this is helpful! Keep up the great work!

so glad you kept the part in where you cried as my daughter just went through this same thing this week. I have been teaching for 22 years and I don't take it to heart that way anymore but she is a first year teacher and had a surprise evaluation and she also had an out of context experience. So I shared your video with her so she doesn't feel so alone! Thank you!

All teachers have a supervisor when you're still working on your credential or a master's. Also you'd have one if you're in an intern program. Usually it's the principal or assistant principal. Always be prepared. My target standards are always up and my objectives are always up. I don't change them until I change them so sometimes they're not always the current ones but if anyone walks in the room, they're up. When I went on break, I left everything up. I updated my target standards day by day until they were all updated. Always be prepared. Always over plan so you have something for kids to do. You could even "steal" something from the sub folder if you unexpectedly need something extra to do. Teaching is hard to do but very rewarding! You do need to find balance between work and personal life. It is essential to get enough sleep so you can be your best!

You. Are. Amazing! I start school in September to get my teaching degree (only two years on top of my business degree yay!) and I watch your videos in the morning while I get ready for work. KZfaq videos from teachers is what inspired me to FINALLY apply for school and it motivates me in the morning to do a good job at my current job and try to identify aspects of managing adults that could hopefully translate to teaching littles! I love how chipper you are even when you are stressed to the max. You are amazing!

I related to this vlog so much 💕 this has happened to me before, when I've worked so hard, went so above and beyond (in terms of both lack of sleep and money from my own pocket) to make sure I'm doing the absolute most for all my students, and it hasn't been seen. And the one day you're having an off moment - that is what is seen. I felt terrible seeing you cry, I think every teacher has felt like that! You are an incredible teacher, you are so motivated and are a total inspiration! Keep up your fantastic work 😊💕 xxx

It's only been recent years where so many young teachers feel pressured to create curriculum, etc. on TpT, vlogging, etc. I've also watched these teachers create elaborate, theme decorated learning projects, totally decorating their whole room to match whatever the project theme is. I LOVE watching these vlogs, buying the cute materials, etc., but can't imagine the pressure and time that it takes to do all this! You're probably just tired! It's hard enough to just run a classroom without all these other things, don't wear yourself out! 🙂

I love how you are so truthful. I love to see the real life of a teacher. It makes me feel like what I experience is normal and I am not alone . Although I love teaching and wouldn't trade it for any other profession it is very difficult. It requires extra hours dedication and some tears, but it's all worthwhile at the end of the year!

You're doing AMAZING! I understand your frustrations. It's hard to seem to only be noticed when your not at the top of your game. Surely administration understands and if they have concerns you'd have a chance to explain the unexpected schedule changes. I'm so glad that you show the good, the bad, the ugly. That's what teaching life is really like. It's ups and downs every day. Keep on keepin' on. I think you rock! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!

Michelle, I just wanted to say that I have recently started watching your channel in the last couple months or so and I look forward to watching you everyday. I'm 31 years old from Michigan and I decided to change careers during the pandemic ( I was a restaurant manager) and go back to school to follow my passion for teaching and will hopefully be teaching elementary education very soon. I just want to applaud you for your efforts with your classroom and your channel that you CLEARLY make each and every day. The moment when you broke down in this video was so real and honestly inspiring. I have had days like that in the restaurant so many times and I'm just like you (being a perfectionist-- when it comes to my work) and I just wanted to say thank you for including this part of being a teacher too. It's easy to make videos where everything seems like sunshine and roses, so thank you. Keep it up girl. I won't stop watching!
