I really love using my leftover yarn for striped socks! I recently finished a pair where I took inspiration from one of Petite Knits striped socks (eight rows of each color and used the same color of a stripe for the heel, so the heel blended in nicely). I actually used a sewrella yarn too! It was from the sunsoaked collection!

I don’t mind reusing the same yarn so long as im gifting the second pair! I always knit my sister or daughter a pair of socks from a skein, and then myself a pair with what’s left over.😊 it works for me for now anyways

Stoll is so much fun and soft. As a sock knitting fanatic, they are so easy to take everywhere in the 50 grams and the tonals are so nice. When I first started making them, the handpainted had me in a chokehold and I am so sad they don't make the glimmer one in any color but undyed. Though it does wash and wear well, it isn't as hardwearing as hawthorne or muse opinion (muse is so good, it's like the best of both with some great colors).

So excited to see your Asopo! Such a beautiful sweater I am trying to get the courage to tackle the long version. Also, I too purchased some woolberry Rambouillet in a variegated blue pink cream tan colour and I am stummmmmmped on what to knit with it. It's such a beautiful yarn, soft and squishy! When sewing pillows you always use a pillow form larger then the finished project. That makes the pillow firmer and beautifully stuffed. If you make another pillow you might try that.

My pillow form was 20” and the knit pillow cover was only 17.5” (which matches the pattern dimensions). Should there have been an even larger size difference?

@@neknits No, that should probably have been big enough,, but since knitting stretches it doesn't seem to fit well. The other thing you could do if you can iron your yarn is cut a piece of fusible interfacing to the back of your pillow. That will stop it from stretching.

Great episode as always, thank you. You set me off on a wooden needles deep dive. Here’s what I found out: Wooden needles can sometimes give you a larger row gauge because of their surface texture. They’re typically slightly rougher and can grip the yarn slightly more, causing the stitches to be slightly larger and looser. They’re also more flexible and that can stretch the stitches slightly more. Also some knitters just find that their tension is tighter with metal needles because they hold the yarn tighter to stop it slipping. It also depends on how elastic the yarn is - the more elastic, the more variance all of these factors introduce. So useful to know this for me as my row gauge is invariably too tight.

I always use German short rows even when the pattern calls for wrap and turn. I think GSR do not show as much in the fabric. I don't have any problems when I swap these. Need to move the placement of the GSR one stitch. Another great episode. Always enjoy them.

Its very easy to sub German Short rows for W&T! I do it all the time. For example, if the pattern says "knit 5, w&t" then you will knit 6 then turn and make the DS. All you are doing is working an extra stitch before turning, its that simple! No "reworking the pattern" needed!

With your left over sock yarn, you could make 1/2 a Musselburgh and then the other 1/2 with another sock skein.

You could also use your left over sock yarn for the inside of folder over collars on sweaters (if the pattern allows for it). Since you most likely won’t see that anyways. And if it’s not itchy of course :)

I don't know if it's your style, but I've seen few people making the beekeeper's quilt out of sock yarn remnants. You could arrange the so called hexipuffs into flowers and make a cream or white border around them (it's not my idea, I shamelessly stole it from Retro Claude because it was brilliant), it could be colourful while still looking stylish. But if you would make it only out of remnants it could take you some time.

I'm also knitting something with the Patagonia Organic Merino yarn right now! I did a block after finishing the yoke and found that it grew a lot vertically. I've also seen a couple project pages where that was mentioned. So you might want to block and try it on after finishing the yoke to see if you like how it's fitting!

Always love watching your episodes- for your sock leftovers, I have very small feet so always have tons of leftovers and have started doing stripey socks with the leftovers, but I only do one row for each colour and love what they come out looking like. I also make sure that if I’m doing a pattern, it’s really different than the first one I did in that colour.

For plies and twists, I highly recommend the book "The Knitter's Book of Yarn" by Clara Parkes. It is a wonderful resource to help fiber lovers understand yarn. She talks about yarn construction and composition and how all of that affects how the yarn will knit up and how your project will turn out. She's also a great instagram follow ❤

I have the same book and I learned a lot about sheep breeds, wool, and yarn from it. It seems like you're (Amy) figuring out the qualities of non-superwash wool: loftiness and lightness because there's more air (especially if it's woolen spun) as well as structure (from not washing and removing all the lanolin) both qualities stay in the finished garment after wearing and hand washing making for light but warm garments.

Substituting GSR for W&T is very easy. I don't remember what page I read spelling it out, but you just have to remember that the W&T stitch is the DS. So, you knit to the # specified in a W&T, and then knit 1 more, which will become your DS when you turn. Glad you liked the W&T but I struggled with them so learning GSR and then how to sub it in was a great technique for me.

I recently made a pair of Skimmer Socks Revisted (by Sheila Toy Stromberg) after seeing Tash's of Mostly Knitting podcast. They use a very small quantity of sock yarn, so are very good for using up leftovers/scraps, and I'm pleasantly surprised by how well they fit and don't slip down off of my feet - even in sneakers.

I bought Summer Lee's book a few weeks ago and I have been knitting socks ever since, playing with stitch count and working on tension. I am trying to find my perfect fit and gauge for comfort and durability, as I like to wear what I make and earlier sock projects have not held up well or felt that great underfoot. I am figuring my key numbers out, am on sock #5, and have already gotten playful with color and use of stash, which is so fun. So your enthusiasm is lighting a fire under me to dive in and try! You know so much more about ply than I do. How did you become knowledgeable about what will work for a project or not? How about making a wonder ball of remnant sock yarns and making a tee. I had half of a garbage bag of remnants and turned that into 2.5 large balls of wonder balls with skeins of single yarns to do ribbings.

Totally agree! Jelly Roll Blanket is a perfect use for this yarn. I’m making one holding one strand of leftover sock/fingering and a strand of white fingering held together. Squishy goodness and the project is very ‘potato chippy’!

I’ve noticed some pillow forms are chubby in the center but have skimpy filling in the corners. My workaround is adding more loose filling in the corners/ along the edges as needed. It keeps the pillow the same size,as in measurement of the edge, but still improves the shape. Sorry that in this project you’ve already sewn it closed. 🙁 But if it really bugs you, maybe worth the effort. It’s beautiful either way. 😍

Oh my goodness I had the exact same thing happen with my Stick Season sweater, it did not block out for me. I think it might be because the shoulders definitely come lower on me and it looks like maybe on you too? I had to rip out both sleeves I couldn’t stand that bump. I reknit the sleeves without the short rows and now they fit better.

Hi Amy, fellow left handed knitter here. I’ve been knitting for about 10 months now and I have questions! Online I’m reading so many conflicting things about swapping k2tog and ssk or m1l and m1r. Some people do it, others say it’s not necessary with symmetrical patterns. The end result is just mirrored. Since you knit a lot of garments, both symmetrical and with cables and lace; do you alter patterns or read them differently?

Most of the time I do not alter patterns, especially when things are worked in the round because the symmetry leads to the same result. Only when I'm working on a portion of a pattern that is direction-specific (i.e. Left Shoulder), I will either mirror the direction of stitches, or a simpler solution is just following the Right Shoulder instructions. I hope that makes sense! It can get nuanced so when in doubt I draw out what the knitting would look like right-handed and see what I have to change for my mirrored stitches.

The two pillows are different sizes, but I used the correct pillow form sizes indicated in each pattern. I’m not too familiar with the different types of pillow forms out there, maybe I needed a puffier one!
