I can totally relate to Pete. I'm 48 and I did the whole box, stick and string to catch birds. I definitely did the rubbish tip rat bashing. We had bats with nails sticking through them. The rats didn't like that too much. I was probably about 12 when we did that with my mates uncle. He had a shotgun so not many rats would escape. Back in day when you could actually do that. So that's how I started. Then bought myself a slug gun pistol, then slug gun rifle and then traveled the world and lived overseas. Moved to Australia from London (I'm a Kiwi) and the first thing I did is get my firearms license. Plenty of deer here. Its out of control.

Hot tip based on what you said don t need to be on full focus if you're not in the zone

Im 63 now but at about 11-13 i borrowed my older brothers sluggun without him knowing ,went to Kihikihi dump during a rat tail competition and shot 530 rats one friday night .I won comp and the prize was $50 i bought a single barreled shotgun then used my ferrets i raised to get rabbits ,back then you got 1 12 guage shell or 3 .22 got enough rabbits to have 12 guage for my first duck shoot at 13 .My ferrets even ended up on TV as one of them got out at the yearly Royal A&P show in Hamilton , a albino one and he killed shit loads of pedigree chooks and bantams lol yep those were the days lol.Keep it up you two its cool listening to storys .

Your not wrong joking about needing a youtube channel to support ya hunting! I have two young boys we love hunting have 2 pig dogs and try get out every weekend but its sad to say im being forced or squeezed out of a dream! financially it just isnt viable to be hunting atm with the costs of everything, its quite sad to be giving up on a dream to be completly honest! But i feel more sorry for young people trying to start out, why? Because theyl need to spend a house deposit on gear to get them going! An what for? It seems its just a dream to be able to hunt every weekend now, you got carbon farms killing everything prosocuting everyone, trips anywhere away from home cost to much its just abit shit out there for some kiwi hunters its fricken hard work and i think the effort is starting to out weigh the reward unfortunatly unless your lucky enough to have it on your back doorstep

It'd be interesting to hear how Pete got into farming. Sounds like your background is definitely not farming, so I'm guessing one wasn't handed down to you. Also the future of family owned farms, where do you think that is headed?
