Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers sat down with me to talk all things POE2 gameplay and development. It was an absolute blast speaking with Jonathan and I learned a lot. Of note are item tier drops, campaign randomization, and lessons GGG learns from new game releases in the ARPG.
Apologies for the audio issues during the beginning, the echo is fixed by minute 2.5. As for my affirmative interjections, well, I've learned for next time.

A quick feedback, please let the other guy finish his sentences before saying something. Like, you were saying "Yeah" and what not while Jonathan was talking, which muffled his voice and some words he was saying. It's understandable you were excited but, the random "Yeahs" while Jonathan was talking made listening to the VOD really hard. Except that everything else was great dude

@@airidasmarcinkus6101 i think the audio balancing gets better at a certain point, so the feedback was less jarring (and I agree it was a bit annoying at first). I was in the livestream for the first half and had to leave for work. Jon's audio was a bit lower before that I think, or maybe I got used to the Yeahs lol. We got some more tidbits and insights in this, incase you change your mind 👍

Nice first big interview Tri. Don't take the feedback in a bad way. I used to work as a sports journalist interviewing world known footballers (soccer players) and my first one was about the same. You learn when to pause. Jonathan obviously understand this and that he is having a discussion with a hugely passionate fan.

Yeah it’s one of the nuanced differences between an interview and a conversation. It’s not as though the “yeah,” “right,” “exactly,” is rude or disruptive to the interviewee, it’s just disruptive to the listener. Jonathan himself did it too, multiple times. He’s just quieter with his affirmations.

Solid interview. I agree with the feedback about the affirmations, but I think you did a lot right, and I wouldn't give yourself too hard of a time about that. You were very clearly well prepared; the questions were excellent, they flowed well, and you had good follow-ups. That is so much more important than anything else, and I enjoyed watching it. Congrats on the opportunity.

Friendly advice from someone (me) who wants to see you succeed for your hard work. I read the criticisms about positive affirmations and am reminded of advice given to of all people Emmitt Smith (all time leading rusher in the NFL played for the Dallas Cowboys) and how when scoring a touchdown, someone told him, "act like you've been there before". Ironically, this being Tri's FIRST big interview, that's basically saying "fake it till you make it". Something to ponder (in the sense that you can say as much with a head nod without triggering those who are tuned into your subject's words rather than your own at that time). Overall, the content and questions were REALLY well done. I learned a lot of cool new things about the game and some I hadn't even pondered. Personally, I find people in everday conversation far more intrusive during conversation than anything i noticed here. I attributed the small interjections as the trademark excitement that I'm used to seeing from Tri. Someone said that it's more jarring to people outside the US, which i found interesting...like a cultural difference. Jonathan, whether he wants to be or not, has BECOME the PR guy for POE2 and has to deal with it (not necessarily a fair ask from a game developer, but people give him crap all the time for saying "like" which he's gotten much better at WITH PRACTICE. I anticipate that'll come with time. Overall I hope you view this as it should be. That being a job well done in my opinion. Naturally there's always room for improvement, but great first dip into this realm. Keep it up Tri. Edit: Final thought, I just remembered how much i tampered with the volume in the early morning watching this interview because the difference in output volume was STARK, and maybe THAT is a factor in why people found some of Tri's words jarring. Jonathan was almost inaudible to the point I had to turn it up, then I had to often turn it back down when Tri spoke because he sounded 5x as loud due to microphone or audio differences. Something to refine in future interviews anyway, good luck!

Man, an advice from me, you should never interupt someone speaking saying "yeah, exactly or makes sence" over the other person. With your head signal your agreement/disagreement or when you want to add something or ask question, just say "sorry to interrupt" or "just a question regarding this". I was like you before but then I started listening to recordings of my meetings and I was like @deamn, this does not sound good " so I tried really hard to stop doing this, it is not easy, I completely understand. Really nice they are listening to feedback, GJ.

@@chupasaurusI am 5 minutes in and its really disruptive if you just want to listen to Jonathans explenations. Because he regularly has to stop is natural talking flow for these little commentaries. I can completly understand him, its Jonathan, its PoE2, he is nervous, but nonetheless its great feedback he should take to heart for his next interviews.I mean for a normal one to one talk its great because its conveying his attention and that he really listens, but for an interview its just not the best habbit. And this was his first great interview, wasnt it? So there should be some feedback on here that really helps him for the next few ones. Edit: If he cant change that habit, then maybe just he just has to backoff off the microphone a bit or do it way more muted. My biggest problem is, that his remarks are way louder than Jonathans voice. I think thats why it feels so disruptive to me.

Great interview, especially after you found your rhythm:) Sidenote, affirmative injections are way more popular in the US than in most other cultures (to my knowledge), especially in some regions. Can def feel weird for the viewer for interviews (especially from those other cultures) but as long as it isn't annoying the one being interviewed it's all good imo:)

Bit of a tip Talkative Tri, is when you're giving an interview try to avoid saying a lot of "ok, ok ok,..right" because it becomes annoying and interrupts the flow of the interview for the viewer. It simply detracts from the interview and literally adds nothing. Watch good interviewers and notice how they don't interrupt or give any kind of affirmations while the other person is speaking, that way the interviewed person will listen fully to your questions and not give any interruptions (usually). I know Jonathan Rogers likes to go on for a WHILE when answering questions and to be honest he is a difficult person to interview, but that's when you have to establish as an interviewer a good pace and precise questioning. Anyway, I'm not an expert about it but it's worth giving some feedback so you can study a bit and improve your future interviews etc.

Killed it Tri, I was listening to this on the way home from work yesterday and I thought you did an excellent job with the questions you chose to ask and how you adapted on the fly to Jonathan. I didn't mind the "active listening" bit as much as others, maybe just scale that back a bit at the start of the reply and save it more for when he is about to finish and you have a follow up. The only thing I would suggest was at the very start it sounded like your mic had some feedback from Jonathan coming through your speakers (maybe it was on his end, not sure). But nVidia Broadcast can help fix that especially when you already are working with a good hyper-cardioid mic.

Watched it live yesterday and the first 30 minutes or so were a bit rough with your interruptions. The audio issues with you being much louder than Johnathan didn't help either. Once that was fixed and you got more comfortable and relaxed the interview improved a LOT though. The later part felt more like a casual conversation between buddies nerding out about their favorite thing and that was great. Keep it up man, overall that was very solid for your frist interview ever.

This was great dude. I think the feedback you're getting is warranted, but once I reframe this in my mind as "...A Conversation with Jonathan Rogers" then I stop noticing the interjections and it feels more like 2 pals talking about the game their both excited about. And I think your excitement gets him more willing to open up. "Interview" sets an expectation. I like how the first thing JRogers talks about is Schwingy's experience. I'm sure others had it too.

Everyone who spent decent time watching your videos knows how enthusiastic you can be. So it's fair criticism for interviews and such, but nothing as big as some made it out to be. It's my point of view so I get that others may find it annoying while I personally don't. I just see a passionate content creator with a passionate developer. I just love how GGG does things when it comes to game design. One other F2P game that I was into for quite some time is Warframe. The main takeaway that I had comparing the two was, that GGG build their game horizontally, while DE does it vertically. What I mean by it, is that in PoE in terms of activities it's an open field, and it all is available rather quickly, so you can go wherever and do whatever, not to mention that you can modify your gameplay experience with little to no drawbacks. In Warframe, on the other hand, it's really quite different. There I feel like I have to scale a tower of content that's piled on top of each other. If I wanted to experience what DE are releasing now, I'd have to go through weeks upon weeks of mindless grinding to get there, just because I took a long break from the game. And honestly, I don't have the time, nor desire to do that. Sure, I could just pay to, an extent, skip it, but to me that's just bad game design, intentionally or otherwise. Sometimes I think that DE lost their minds or something, with all the grinding they invite you to partake in. In the end I got so pissed that latest content is basically out of my reach, and will be for quite a while, that I just quit (I think this time for good). With PoE it's just nice, you can hop in and out whenever, and you're in the same place everyone else is, broadly speaking. There isn't anything that's unavailable because you haven't cleared a crap ton of prerequisite and grinded a buttload of materials. How far players wanna go in certain activities, how much they wanna challenge themselves, is their own personal preference, but every activity is available for everyone.

This led to checking out your channel... which was the opposite experience. There may be equally great content there, but it's obfuscated by endless derivative titles that don't describe the true topic of the video, leaving no desire to click any of them.

In diablo 2 you have items you can buy in the shop which can help you alot - such as high life armour, faster hit recovery. I think high single affix shop purchases are great.

Blight is fun for like 2 hours for me but it's biggest problem is towers turning off at a screen and a half. It's very limiting especially when it's supposed to be a tower defense.

They should add a master gemcutter NPC, that explain the skills. The problem with this is that it would cost a lot more money because new skill additions would need these videos as well. Text to speech could be an interesting solution to explore.

I think some thought should be put into when is going into town to fill up on potions annoying, and when is it too much? I think the annoying part is when you have to go back to town for refreshment was after something "trivial" If it was like during some big bad boss, it's okay, but if you're just trying to progress regular trash combat, it's weird When is it too much...? Probably a good rate would be maybe every 30 minutes? Maybe Flasks should get WAYY more charges, so that when you run around you slowly deplete them, and whenever you decide to come back to town, it can be like an actual trip to town, not just going to the well, but it becomes a moment where you wanna get everything done all at once. Flask well -> talking to NPC -> selling -> Shopping -> maybe even get a town rested buff or so?

I think part of that balancing act is in trying to make very little of the game feel like "regular trash combat" and be more intentional and meaningful, there needs to be an element of danger. Without that, you're playing poe1 to some extent, and then a rare comes around and you're like wtf, this thing is a million times more difficult all of a sudden. I'd guess this is a very delictate balance that they probably INTEND for you to die from time to time due to this difficulty. Your "reward" for surviving being that you have to zone out to town, stop at the well, then zone back...I think some people would rather they just died and started over. That said, I don't think it's an easy fix without making everything between bosses trivial, and therefore relatively uninteresting for the most part.

lol im so glad you fixed the sound, i was like do i have to listen to the full thing like this ? xD *only like 12min in: i love the idea of the rolls from unid items, after playing last epoch for like 2 weeks i was really didding the option to show only for example exalted (t6) mods, or even only show items that rolled t7 mods, or like at least TWO t6 mods etc. while i dont think everything should always drop identifyd like in last epch but a way to at least sort most of the trash rares out is really really needed in poe (specially poe1 i hope somehting like this comes for poe 1 too) like imagine you could only show rares with at least one t1 roll and two tier 2 rolls or somehting like that. there should never be a point in poe where u dont even loot at rares anymore, not even the high ilvl / good bases, like for the most part u might wanna pick up some good bases and just keep the base for crafting or u just sell the base but the item itself is trash like 99.5% of the time once your gear starts getting kinda decent its not worth to pick up any rare items if its not something crazy like best es base / 100%base es roll / highest item lvl possible or somehting like that. *50min in: i think the instant buyout stuff has huge risks going with it, like ppl could create bots/scripts that instantly buyout stuff that has been listed for like a wrong price. poe always had this "thing" idk how to call it, but if you price somehting and u get like 20 wispers once you listed it almost any poe player will know or eventually learn that this item was waaay underpriced and will doublecheck what its really worth. i will never forget when it happend to me when i was a total noob, i found a wand with alot of physical damge on it and randomly priced it for 50c or some shit because it didnt seem that good to me, got like 1-2 wispers almost instantly, sold it because 50c was alot for me back then and like than i prolly got like 10 more wispers and started to think hmmm... was this too cheap ??? asked my friend and he was like duuuude this was and 50ex wand or somehting like that, it had crazy high phys damage on it and you could still craft attack speed on it, and it was already almost as good as all the suuuper expensives ones without it. so tldr ppl gonna write scripts, create bots to snipe very specific things that can be online 24/7 instantly buying these things the moment your able to buy them. this could get abused like crazy, like not alot of ppl talk about this but poe1 has bots and scripts too, like literally tradebots that just buy/sell currency for small profit 24/7. the only thing thats preventing those trade bots/chaos farm bots to go crazy is how trade works atm. soo yeah im kinda scared.

Bots would still have to play the game to aquire the necessary gold for instant buyout trading but we will see how effective this will be in preventing bots from taking over the economy.

@@Daekline yea i orginally wanted to say that too but it dosnt mather, there could be a human playing 1-2hours a day to farm the "trading currency" and than let bot run the other 22h to snipe stuff, i mean it would only snipe stuff thats worth alot to snipe obviously.

The "Real choices in the passive tree" is exactly my biggest problem with diablo 4 right now and why i love and prefer path of exile. To understand just open a d4 build planner, choose sorcerer and then filter for "burn".. D4 has a lot of obvious choices and when i played the game i didnt feel like choosing at all. It was more like choosing a build but i had very little room to diverge from it. So in short, yes please give us choices. Multiple good ones if possible and the bad choices should be great choices for different builds. Thats the balancing act but having real choices is a good thing.

Awesome job on the interview but agree with the constructive criticism given. I think my biggest takeaway from all of the interviews is POE2 is definitely not going to be released until 2026 or later. Would be interesting to know how many times and on how many different areas Jonathan states 'we still have a lot of work to do' because it seems like most of the game is still in that state. Not a criticism just an observation.
