In this video we run a Patriot Ordnance Factory P416 until it fails, or doesn't. The P416 is a factory machine gun for military and LE use, however POF offers the P415 which is a standard semi-automatic rifle built to the exact same specifications as what is shown here. Lets just say you are going to want to stick around and see the results, we set the bar pretty high with this one for future meltdowns.

Picked one up last year. Fit and finish is just a cut above, never a stoppage outside of a bad 10 round PMAG out of the plastic that was immediately retired. I've put about 500 rounds of M80 ball and a few boxes of match ammo through it and have been blown away by the light recoil and accuracy (even M80 is acceptable within 400 yards!). Highly, highly recommend

+ROBINSON4942 By the numbers 50 million (conservatively) in the US own 1 or more of 300 million+ firearms in the US. There is not enough Law Enforcement Officers, Military, Prison Space, or Budget to enforce even a partial "ban." What we the shooting public need to do is encourage people to take up shooting as a fun and practical activity that is also important to essential Liberty. The less insular and backbiting we act the more broad acceptance will force politicians to accept the realities. Like it or not Abortion, Gay Marriage, and Firearms are here to stay.

Agreed. But remember...the point of the meltdown is to shoot the gun until it explodes or stops or has a major failure that renders it completely inoperable. We never achieved that...the gun still works. Actually I did test the accuracy at 100 yards after this test when it cooled down and it was literally shooting a 15 foot group at 100 yards. BUT...if your position was being overran and they were right in top of you, you could still defend yourself

I first watched this video during the ammo crisis and literally couldn't get through it. "OH! THATS NOT FAIR! IT'S....JUST WASTEFUL!" But then I watched it again a year or two later and now its AWESOME. Surprised how much abuse that barrel took given the temperatures, I would have expected the metal to swell with heat and then with burnt powder build-up, I would have figured the tight tolerances in the barrel and around the BCG to get "jammy" once the lubricant was gone. I'm guessing that is probably why it refused to cycle there at the end.

Well, given the extreme continued heat from firing and unreal high round count. That rife has really performed extremely well. It's very dirty from all the burnt gunpowder, lacquer ammo case coating buildup, and lack of liberation. Yet the rifle still continues to operate. That's a real torture test that only a select few gun manufacturer's would survive. You can definitely expect some wear and tare to happen on the barrel, extractor, bolt, and other etc parts. Would definitely clean and luberate the rifle as soon as it safely cools down.

ANY gun with that continuous fire would likely have WORSE problems than this POF did. That is why machine guns designed for continuous fire have quick-change barrel setups. I am honestly pretty impressed. I did not expect this gun to perform as it did. I will admit to never giving POF a second look although I have owned a couple that were acquired through trades and then traded again without putting enough rounds through them to have an opinion. I think this proves POF to be a viable option for a SHTF weapon. Nice work POF! Nice test IV8888!

2 things would be cool to see with another POF 416. At the end of this test, if the rifle is select fire, to flip it to semi and see how long it would run until it broke broke, and to see how it’d operate. Second, do a full test in semi to see if the round increase before minor and major failure.

+krombopulous michael Not really. this is way beyond combat shooting. Most soldiers or contractors (at least on stationary position) look at rifles as the last line of defense. The rifle is a supplement to belt fed, mortars, and in some cases, air support. Otherwise the rifle is meant to help fill in the gaps and is a PDW. Most soldiers and some contractors only carry a basic combat load. This showed the rifle capable of sustained fire where sheer numbers can overrun an attack and still handle a combat load out in semi auto fire. Maybe not as accurate because the barrel is shot but, just the fact it worked says a hell of a lot. That being said, I completely see your point. Unless you're in E&E mode under extreme circumstances, (and even then) rifles aren't shot like this. This is better performance than a M4 by a long shot.

I think a good portion of that “failure to feed/failure to extract/failure to lock back” part of the test may have actually had a lot to do with the lubrication breaking down due to the heat. I bet dropping a a few drops of oil into the mag well would’ve made it run better for a lot longer.

Well, here's the issue - The M4 Carbine has an average cost (for the US Government) of around $700 USD. The POF P415 costs over $2100 USD (At retail). At minimum, even if the government gets a 1/3rd cost reduction in the P415, that's still double of what the US GOV pays for new M4 Carbines. If our M4's/M16's/AR15's are maintained at just a basic level, they prove themselves very reliable. Add on top of this, the fact that no US Soldier will ever fire this volume of ammo in this short a time (at least not in a standard issue carbine/rifle), and there really is no reason for the US GOV to adopt the P415 over the M16/M4. Not to mention, it means they would have to replace the current rifles with them - Assuming we replace them all with P415's, that means they would have to replace over 8 million rifles. That would cost the US GOV some $16,800,000,000 USD - Even reducing the price by 1/3rd still costs over 11.2 Billion USD. 11.2 Billion to 16.8 Billion USD just to replace what already works perfectly well if there is at least a half assed attempt to maintain the rifle. I mean I'd be all fine with our troops getting these things if they're more reliable, but our current ones work just fine for a much lower cost.
