Pohoiki is the newest black sand beach. It was created by the 2018 Leilani lava flow. The sand that was created continues to fill in a once surfable bay where boats were launched to fish the verdant waters of Hawai'i island's south east coast. Residents miss what was there before but appreciate that all was not lost in the flow.

Aloha Jeremiah__ Amazing to see new black sand still being deposited at Pohoiki. I went back and checked your New Year's beach party video and the one you did of Unko Boogie's surf contest this past June and it's evident that a lot of sand is still filling into the area. Also the water in the land-locked pools look really clear so I'm suspecting circulating brackish water, maybe you can check to see if the tiny, transparent red "wai opae" shrimp are turning up. Lastly, at the very end of your video, I can still see offerings placed on top of one of the concrete pilings that used to be the breakwater. Next time you're down there can you check to see if it's a tribute to Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale. On the side facing the ocean there should be a metal cross and a photograph. Great video as always.

Wow. The beach is huge. There looks to be no end to the volcanic debris being carved off the northern edge and deposited at Pohoiki. Over time, I imagine winds will eventually blow black sand into the remaining ponds and those will disappear. Nature is a tough task master.

Was there this summer. A wave caught me on the beach by surprise. It knocked my ray bans off broke the lens. It took two + days for my hiking boots to dry.

I was going to ask about the iron content because magnetite sand is also known as "black sand" but from the description its obsidian sand from volcano magma. which obsidian is 65-80% silica. there could be some presence of iron from hematite but not as much as magnetite black sand you would get from something like gold panning/dredging. still cool, just harder to separate the iron and not as lucrative to process.

I remember back in 1967 when meeting my husband for R&R from Vietnam we were approached by people in Waikiki trying to interest us in buying some black sand beach property on the Big Island. We passed and I guess we were smart to do so because 50 years later it looks like nothing much has been built.

Wonderful video Jeremiah! The wave work is fantastic! It's so beautiful there and you showcase it so well! ~~ I wonder if that will be a permanent beach since it filled in a bay area and is so close to the edge of such a large lava flow area? I understand that people want the boat ramp back but I figure it would be nearly impossible to keep it open at that location. Perhaps another ramp can be built before too long at another location? I hope so for the sake of all the boaters.

Lava took secrets, bowls, shacks and dead trees, but spared 1st 2nd and 3rd bay. Sand took the boat ramp and 1st and 2nd bay and the county of Hawaii, due to their usuall fear of acting,do nothing to alleviate the problem, nothing! Had dredges been going and bull dozers dozing the fisherman's boat ramp might be back!

The waves/beach interface seems to have changed. When I was there in december '18, you couldn't safely enter the water to swim because of waves breaking on rocks. The area now seems to be much more sandy. Does the sand now extend into the water? The little ponds appears to be fantastic and clear water with people in them. I guess there is enough rain to keep them from becoming stale water? What about the water at boatr ramp? Does that also get enough new water from rain to keep it from becoming unfit for humans to be in? BTW, loved the part of video where you are ahead of a wave and follow it as it progresses.
