So many poinsettia videos say "no direct sunlight." I thought I'd hurt mine by giving it so much sun. I'm glad I did! I also didn't know they dropped all they're leaves. I think mines right on track! Cross fingers!

Dyanne Avery! I just want to thank you for your tips! Every year I receive a poinsettia from a student. And it dies. It's cold where I live. This past year I said, I am going to figure out how to get this to survive! I did EVERYTHING you have said, I just brought it in tonight and it definitely grew! It doesn't fit in its original spot this year! HAHA! My leaves are small but green but are continuing to grow bigger. I will be starting the 12-hour dark treatment beginning of November. I will keep you all posted. But so far so good! Thanks again!

Thank you so much. I am in Canada and I have 2 beautiful ones that I bought last Christmas. We are almost in August and still have leaves and red flowers. People can’t believe it, they say they never saw that. I just give a glass of water everyday and let God be life in my plants. Should I trim it to be on a tree like your beautiful one? I will put them outside tomorow , they will feel the sun. I will need to water them more. Thank you for all the information and God Bless you dear!

This is probably the best video I have seen on the topic of keeping poinsettias. Thank you. I would also like to add that it is possible to keep poinsettias alive even if you don't have good southern exposure. My apartment faces north-east so I only ever have morning sun and, in the winter, my poor poinsettia never sees the sun. But I keep it near a window and it manages. During the summer I can put it outside but it still only gets morning sun-- and it thrives! This is its 4th winter. And, despite this, it has even gotten color sporadically, more in the spring than fall, but that's because I haven't tried to force it. I only mention this because, if you don't have direct sunlight, it may still color and survive. Also, a heat lamp can help provide light, too, even if it's only on for a few hours a day. I did that one year (may pull it out again). But it's good to know it can come back after losing all its leaves. It usually keeps a few leaves until spring so I wasn't sure. This year it was so lush and gorgeous in September and I was determined to keep it going well. But now that I know what I've done wrong, I can relax. Ah. Next fall I think I might try to force the color. I was thinking I'll just get a 30-gallon black garbage bag and cover it each afternoon to ensure complete darkness. ?? That would be easier than moving it into a closet each day.

Great advice, thank you! I followed the advice after Christmas 2021, kept my plant indoors throughout, trimmed it as shown, placed on a South facing windowsill as I live in Scotland, UK. Delighted and surprised to get beautiful scarlet blooms developing by Oct 2022 and still scarlet now in late Feb 2023. Definitely dying back, losing lower leaves and now red ones are going too. I will try to keep it going again, repot it around May/June this year, and hope to enjoy it for years to come. 🙂👏

perfect information, i grabbed a bunch of these in pots that someone put at curb, cleaned them up, they were in rough shape, put them all together in a BIG pot and they grew bigger and filled out again, ive noticed that their green is looking weak, the soil is too moist, and most importantly, it was in the shade, i now know to put it in the sun, thankyou so much.

I'm a little confused about my "coming out of dormant" Pointsettia. I clipped all the red leaves off about 6 weeks ago and she starting growing very nicely again (new green leaves all over the place). I just looked at her yesterday and I noticed some of the top leaves have "red" color in the leaves already. Its confusing me because I thought the leaves will only turn red when its starting to bloom. I understand a poinsettia starts to bloom when the light schedule gets to around 12/12, (I hope someone sees this and can help) but is it possible for a pointsettia to start having red leaves when it is in its vegetative state growing stems and leaves? I'm wondering if it is having red leaves already because I dont have it in enough light for at least 18 hours a day? Please someone help...🥴🤓🥺
@ooohlaa13
@ooohlaa13 4 жыл бұрын
@@nateellenberger6043 I watched another channel and they said when you cut it back you have to take off the red and then go one leaf below the red when you clip it, so technically you would be taking off one of the green leaves with the cut. You do this to prevent the plant from putting out the energy to make the colored leaf which takes a lot of power.

If i live in Canada's Zone 3 on the Canadian hardness chart. Would a poinsettia get enough light in the window through the window? For just under 4 months we only get around 8 hours of daylight, but it's usually overcast in our winter in my city. Would a poinsettia be a bad long term plant if I wanted to successfully grow one to a tree size?

Then with the plastic thing in a pot and put it befor the window on the diner table and water it just 2 times a week and not to much water, better to water 1 time extra then to much water at once

I would love if someone could advise!! I have a 3 year old poinsettia, which in previous years I have dark treated in October, then next year September but by Xmas it is barely reddening and right now (end Apr) it has flowers and is STILL producing bracts. I know that by rights it should be leafless and I should prune it but I am reluctant to disrupt its growth cycle . What should I do to get it to display for Christmas?!
@Misabelle
@Misabelle 4 жыл бұрын
Piggy Sister Have you been fertilizing it? I’ve read that the weeks leading to and during the period when you’re leaving it in the dark for 12+ hours, you should feed it a fertilizer that’s higher in nitrogen (5%) to help the leaves to turn red. Once the leaves have turned red, you stop fertilizing. I hope that works for you!

She seem to know a lot about Poinsettia. But one thing she said that makes me feel she needs to know one basic thing about the plant. The flower itself isn't the coloring foliage. That's called bracts. The flower(s) of the Poinsettia are the tiny flowers that are growing in the center portion of those bracts. It is similar to Bougainvillea, since it too has colored bracts that surround the actual Bougainvillea flowers.

Repot it in a larger pot and cut it all the way down to about 5 inches off the ground. The plant will basically be bald at that point but will come back. Give it LOTS of sun light. I have one I repotted for the first time and it looks like a small tree. I had to cut it all the way down to shock it into growing full and green.

@kaleoy7584
@kaleoy7584 4 жыл бұрын
Several things could be the reasoning. 1) You pruned it too late. 2) The amount of sunlight it is receiving. 3) Not using the right fertilizer. 4) May not be warm enough, since it does like humidity. At the latest one should prune the plant, is the ending part of August.

Sorry but I can't totally agree with this advice. Back Story My company had it's annual Christmas party early. The first Saturday of December. (They did that as everyone had many scheduled events/parties and celebration through December. No one has anything planned the first week in December of course! LOL) They had baby poinsettias put on all the tables. (In all my life, I've never seen baby poinsettias. I'm use to seeing the large ones.) After the party they did not want to throw them out so they wanted the employees to take them as gift. Most did not want them. (They are not plant loving people such as myself) So I couldn't take them all home with me and since it was the beginning of December I distributed them throughout the company since we needed a little festive touch. I place some in the guest area and some on the employees desk to brighten up their office and put a smile on their face! It worked and decorating with the poinsettias put mostly everyone in a Christmas holiday spirit!) (We had a couple of grinches who did not want one in their office.) I took on the responsibility to make sure the poinsettias where properly cared for. Many of them were beginning to wilt and needing water desperately! I went around and watered them all and check them the next day. All but two sprung back to life and I quickly replace them. Here's were I disagree with this advice. My poinsettias Story I did not and would not take the plant out the pot to water them. Too much extra work. I simply filled a pitcher with warm water and gave them a good soaking, only at the roots, once a week on Wednesdays. I did not take the foil wrapper off the pots as it keeps the water from leaking out onto the tables. Results Fast forward to over a month later now in January the poinsettias are 3 times as big! They want take them home fearing they will kill them. We've only had one to almost completely wilt but I've nurse the small remaining foliage back to life. It's doing good. I have it with me. A lot of them have given me praise. They are surprise that the poinsettias are still living and getting bigger beyond Christmas. They've never seen any make it beyond Christmas! Also the company has huge large windows so they plenty of indirect light but no direct sunlight. They are flourishing and I want be surprise if they last until next Christmas! This is the first time I've also seen them last and flourish beyond Christmas. I'm so proud of them. And the employees appreciate me gifting them the poinsettias and keeping them healthy and alive. The customers are surprise to see them to. It would make an interesting story if they last throughout the year! LOL
