Point Break: What's It REALLY About?

Point Break, on the surface, is a buddy-action thriller about the most extreme game of cops and robbers that you could possibly imagine. But seeing as its influence has spanned from the iconic first instalment of the Fast and the Furious mega-franchise to the extremely disappointing 2015 remake- which I'm still recovering from- I figured there’s got to be something more to this movie that makes me and everyone else I know cherish it so much. It’s a story that packs a lot of relatable themes like friendship, love, loyalty, and sacrifice. It is indeed a real blue flame special, and what I need to know is “What’s Point Break REALLY About?”

So me and my college roommate were best friends, watched roadhouse, point break, anchorman,lethal weapon, all of the best friend classics and wld quote them often. Anyway after he got married and had kids we kind of lost touch, as it happens. So it had been 4 years since I saw him and at a friend's wedding the first thing he said to me was "still surfing?" And I replied "everyday". Then we hugged.

When Point Break came out, I was an 8yr old, living on an Army Base in Hawaii. I was surrounded by adults who were similarly if not ultimately slightly less extreme than the characters in this film... because it was real life... however the combination of surfing, football, cops and robbers of the militaristic sort was real in my life. Then seeing a movie that seemed to bein an eriely similar environment really stuck with me. That extreme death wish, that invincibility feeling, that strong mind and body attitude. In my eyes Point Break is one if the finest films ever made. No matter how much my friends and I loved T2 and even the amount of things that rang true in my life in that film as well. I gotta choose Point Break as the film I love to watch more. It was so good they ripped it off and made like 20 fast and furious films directly copying it. It made Keanu's career IMO, I did already feel comfortable with him on screen ny then because I had seen him on Bill And Ted in the theatre, I had seen Youngblood, the film that fed into Point Break with Swaye and Reeves. It set Keanu up to do Speed, which I also saw in the theater first chance I got because of this movie, it set him up for The Matrix and John Wick without a doubt. I consider something about Point Break very beautiful and cinematic with perfect action scenes and incredibly crafted in every sense, I have had a feeling that filming was heavily influenced by James Cameron, styled and finalized by Kathryn Bigelow. Wonderful movie, never gets old, I love it more than Top Gun.

Love it I think the 2 sided nature of Swayze’s performance is still underrated He is obviously magnetic as a super cool alpha male with a spiritual outlook but he is also convincing as a manipulator who backs his ability to charm people to get them to help him get what he wants. He also gives off the ruthless vibe you highlighted that underpins the Bodi character

I surfed for years, in my teens. This movie was released during that period and encapsulated that connection to the ocean. I love this movie for that realism and appreciate the amazing cast and crew to produce this gem. Katherine Bigelow is an overlooked director, and her films need to be revisited.

This movie came out when I was 12 and I snuck in to see it with a few friends. I didn't realize that it was directed by a woman until Katheryn Bigelow was nominated for Hurt Locker. I don't know if she contributed to the story but I love the relationship between Johnny and Bhodi. Some people might see homoeroticism but like you, I saw brotherhood which makes it all the more tragic that neither of them won in the end
@eme.261
@eme.261 3 ай бұрын
Those who see homo-eroticism are those who fear intimacy between those of the same sex. It's as though they can't comprehend that people are love each other and connect deeply, without it having anything to do with s e x.

I think she definitely added a level of depth to the relationships of the movie that we probably wouldn’t have seen from one of the male action directors of the era. Also I think her being a woman is why she saw the potential in Keanu Reeves when the studio wanted a more macho looking guy to play the role
@hendo337
@hendo337 3 ай бұрын
She was married to James Cameron then, he definitely aided her craft IMO, without him I don't think she could have pulled this film together, at the least he probably opened a lot of doors and helped her find the crew members that always made his films incredible as well.
@hendo337

Definitely nothing homo in the movie, I sense that in Top Gun but, not this movie. They're a couple adrenaline junkies experiencing every thrill life has too offer, that's why roach even throws out there that it's better than sex and honestly he's right because doing life threatening things causes a physiological reaction that lasts a lot longer than an orgasm. Something like being in a gunfight against an enemy with live rounds dumps adrenaline for well over 15 minutes after only a short exchange, an orgasm might have you feeling good 5-10 minutes after the initial act. I think these are the type of dudes that would all be sitting around smoking meth or something if they weren't doing extreme sports and gun play, which is also I think why they showed the other surfer gang were doing and dealing hard drugs.

I have to add one more thing I loved in this movie. I loved the foot chase where Utah is chasing Bohdi. The chase was very intense though garages, back yards and even going through a house. I can’t remember any movie with a foot chase like that. That is a testament to how much action they wanted to pack into the movie and the end where Utah falls off the wall, breaks his knee and points his gun straight at Bohdi then he pauses as Bohdi escapes. It leaves you wondering if Utah got sucked too far into Bohdis world. One hell of a plot twist if you ask me.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. Always have. From the moment we see Keanu in the rain at Quantico going through one of the test firing ranges, to him standing on the beach (also in the rain) deciding to let Swayze take on his final wave, there's not one dull minute. Every scene serves a purpose, every cast member brings their A-game.......I can't say enough good things about this movie. Even the brief cameo of Anthony Kiedis of TRHCP was fun to see. And yes, the remake is utter garbage. Poor Patrick Swayze is probably doing cyclones in his grave over that travesty of a movie. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ R.I.P. I was a huge fan of Patrick Swayze’s at the time (still am, by the way) and was stoked when I heard this film was coming out although I knew next to nothing about the plot and didn’t even know Swayze was playing “the bad guy.” It’s one of my favorite films and I’ve seen it many times to the point of memorizing most if not all of the script. Having said that, I will say that the bank robbery that Utah & Pappas unwittingly end up at which leads to an extended foot chase between Johnny & Bodhi really causes the film to lose all sense of reality. There’s no way Bodhi and his crew are going to treat Johnny like their friend (and go skydiving with him) after he’s revealed who he is to them and that he knows who they are. Utah & Pappas have the evidence to arrest Bodhi (even though he never takes off his mask during the chase). And even if the evidence was circumstantial, there’s no way Johnny’s going to trust these guys (nor should they be trusted). The scene after Tyler leaves and Bodhi shows up makes no sense. They know who each other are at that point and Johnny still lies to them about his injury. That in and of itself is bad writing. They should have done the skydiving before that point if they wanted to include that aspect of the story. Having them go skydiving after Utah’s revealed who he is just doesn’t add up and seems like someone wasn’t paying attention when editing the film. Either that, or the idea is that Bodhi doesn’t care that Johnny’s FBI and getting him involved with his next bank robbery is just Bodhi experiencing another rush. But I just can’t get over Johnny lying to Bodhi about his injury knowing they know what really happened. Without that scene and rearranging the skydiving to come earlier in the film would have made the story more plausible. And as I say this, I still love the film. Patrick Swayze plays a very charismatic bad guy that you can’t help but want to root for even though you know he’s a bad guy. And Keanu does an admirable job as the young FBI agent trying to crack his first case while getting in too deep with the guys he’s trying to take down. Bigelow’s direction and Donald Peterman’s cinematography are legendary. The film looks beautiful. It’s just a shame that the story falls apart when Johnny catches Bodhi and company in the act of robbing the bank.

Johnny was Definitely falling under the Spell... Bodhi stuck up for and ended up fighting and Winning against 4 bad dudes with Utah. Bodhi also recognized instantly Utah didn't get scared of "Bunker" or his motley crew. Which was unbelievably rare for Bodhi to see. There was also some 300 vibes in there.. when you can trust someone truly with your life that gets deep into TRUE Loyalty. You see it with war buddies. The movie touched something that really can't be explained. I always wondered why Bodhi decided to hit the vault.. that 1 action started his inevitable fall.. maybe Bodhi wanted to push it.. or maybe he had a premonition of his demise. Either way a classic.

Funny thing about this movie, I can't remember if I saw it in the theater or just saw the trailer in the theater. I feel like I did see it in theaters but maybe it's just a mandela thing. Like how I vividly remember seeing Pulp Fiction in the theater and swore I saw the "Elvis vs Beatles" scene there, only to find out decades later that was only on the tv edit version.

I watched it because it was the name Stark gave Thor. I didn't very much like though. I just felt it was bland. The action wasn't anything that excited me either. When I was done I was confused why people like it so much. I still don't get why he threw his badge away.

The apex of American cinema. I wish Iliff pulled a Michael Mann and released Point Break 2 as both prequel and sequel like Mann/Gardiner's excellent Heat 2

13:33 Johnny and Tyler stay together. That's a BIG win for him. I'd trade my job in any day for a spunky short haired, blue eyed, Cajun accented, athletic girl that likes wearing skin tight sporty outfits and the hottest blue dress on this side of the galaxy! 🌊😍
