Exactly! Because they use motion capture the dancing looks so much more real than when animators just replicate dance moves. I've always found the dancing in Ballerina (this movie, it's Leap in the US) is in uncanny valley, it's like they almost have bendy bones, while the Barbie movies have the control and strength of real dancing.

I remember back then when I first watched the movie in the cinema, I was mesmerized because they looked so cool, doing ballet (obviously better) like me and also being about the same age. But now that I'm seeing that particular scene again together with Josephine's accurate expressions, I realize how extra and unrealistic it was. Still a good movie tho. Very inspirational (not just because I think that we should invent dance battles in ballet).

The most ridiculous part I can't get past is the initial training scene, when the main character learns how to land quietly and how to turn without getting dizzy... All her instructor-friend needed to tell her was, "land gradually from toe to heel," and "there's this technique called spotting." I understand they wanted to make this all dramatic, which was absolutely fun to watch, but having been a dancer myself, the way that was approached was WAY over-complicated. The writers should've chosen to do that dramatic scene with different moves...maybe I could've learned something new.

@@NightWink129I think the target audience is really young, like barely starting dance classes if that old. My daughter LOVED this movie, and she watched it often from around 18 months until 3 years old. At that age, it's about the impression of ballet with some feelings mixed in to tell the story. It's also why they went so over the top with the "bad guy" mom. It's not supposed to be realistic at all. It was perfect for the super young kids, not so much for anyone with more than a couple years of training.
@chewbuggy528
@chewbuggy528 Жыл бұрын
My favorite and close to accurate part is where she is trying to touch the bell without making ripples in the water. It is very hard. During ballet we would spend a large portion of each class just jumping up and down trying not to sound like a herd of elephants jumping but to be as silent as possible. I haven't been in dance for a few years but even now I can't jump and make a sound with my feet, no matter how hard I try. Also I'm sneaky because between ballet and marching band I learned how to walk silently, gracefully, and quickly.

@dandelionrain
@dandelionrain 2 жыл бұрын
honestly, while i agree and hate the trope, i cant deny its a bit accurate, though very over-exaggerated. ive met a lot of petty dancers. the best example i can give is the time my friend and i competed in YAGP. now, we were the first competitors, on the first day of the 3 day competition and it was our first competition ever. i am also NOT a morning person, so this was already a stressful experience. at yagp, you get something called open stage. a 15-20 minute period, where all the dancers from your 'block' (which is a lotttt of dancers), all just get lumped together on the small stage, and attempt to space their dances. the issue? well, imagine 20+ dancers, all marking ( or doing full out if you were one of _those girls_ ) different dances, spinning in opposite directions, and just general havoc. nowhere was safe, everyone hits everyone. if you want to space properly, you gotta fight for it. and two 14 year old girls at their _first ever competition,_ were not about to fight for space and get in the way. you then get told to clear the stage when the time is up and then the competition starts. however, sometimes dances are allowed 5-10 minutes, alone on stage, for spacing (mostly for group dances). my teacher asked for us to have time to space, so my friend and i, being the first competitors, and a duo, were allowed 5 minutes. so we went back out on the stage. the dancers in the wings were waving their hands around, folding their arms, rolling their eyes, shaking their heads and glaring at us. pissed off, wondering _why_ we were still on the stage when they had been told to clear. the girls all adopted this insanely smug expression when a stage helper came up onto the stage. we went to get off, thinking our time was up, but she waved her hand at us and told us "oh no sweeties! youre fine, dont worry youve got time" and then left to continue talking to my teacher. so, we continued. after we competed, we went off into the wings and these girls are those most TWO FACED girls ever. we get off and their all _ohhhh you did so beautifullll, great job :)_ and im just thinking to myself like.......ooookay. thanks... i guess. but i am not the kind of person to say anything and neither was my friend, though she didnt see them as well as i did as she face facing the opposite direction at the time. i decided to just wish them good luck and left. as we did, i heard one girl say "ugh, what a b-tch." thanks for that linda

@MissAlexisP Dude, there were so many toxic people in my old studio before I left. And many people were leaving to move onto college or move into a different place, so I nearly ended up being the only person in my level. The two girls who joined me (and their mother) had a bizarre vendetta against my family, and therefore me, for no known reason. That was hell until I quit because of an injury and never returned.

Girl it literally takes place in France 2 or 1 centuries ago, are you really expecting a “less” white character when 80% of France is white?? The girl could have been black, yeah, but there’s literally no necessity at all. And almost all of the characters are extremely thin except 2, it’s usually a type of body animation for characters that appears in many movies

@udkel jdkla if it took place 100 years ago in the 1920s, or 200 years ago in the 1820s, that still doesn’t explain the red haired character wearing shorts over leggings. The designers clearly cared little enough for historical accuracy. Of course, that’s leaving aside the fact that there were people of color in all echelons of society all over Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, and long before.

Oh boy, my two kids loved this movie which means I'vewatched it many times now, but I LOATHE it! Spoiler Alert: The mean girl (who works so hard at winning her role on-stage btw) does not get the role after all, because little miss talented here (who also worked super hard, but then decided to go out and Teenager all night instead of being responsible THE NIGHT BEFORE A BIG AUDITION) because "dancing is in my blood" or something. I honestly felt so sorry for mean girl (voiced by Maddie Ziegler) because her mother is the worst dance mom ever, a snob and a murderous psychopath. Imagine having to live with her. The teacher is snarky and horrible to the young dancers and we don't actually see him teach anything, just criticise. Miss talented is unkind to her best friend, who adores her but also needs to understand that she just wasn't that into him and no means no, for goodness sakes! The dialogue is stilted and the characters stiff. The story is so full of cliches I can't even with it, and it just does not flow. At all. And do not get me started on the "that's not a thing" moments, which are copious. Ooft, rant over before I blow a gasket.

thank you so much for this oh my god. i used to dance ballet but i ended up stopping because of inflammed bones in my feet, and it honestly pissed me off so bad that miss main character could go on pointe as soon as she got to the opera when everyone else trains years for it. i feel like the story would have been better off if it revolved around the blonde girl, because her story is way more realistic. it's much more relatable to see a girl who works hard at what she does because she's forced to and then who discovers her true passion for ballet later

I thought it was really cool that L'Atelier Animation got actual Parisian dancers Aurelie Dupont and Jeremie Belingard to choreograph and model for the film. She said they had a special connection to the story because they dance at the Opera house every day, and she remembers being the same age as the girls in the film and going on that journey. There's neat footage of scenes like the dance battle you watched showing them in person in actually dancing it side by side with the matching animation. Not dance related.. the background story of the boy working under Gustave Eiffel while building of the statue of liberty is pretty cool as well.

As a ballerina I think it’s funny how she had no experience in pointe but was like a professional in less than a week And also did pointe in just regular flats💀

That leap over the stairs move is grand jeté . A very difficult leap to do and definitely not exaggerated in irl than this movie. But the leap is a real thing
