There are many reasons why it's difficult for some dancers to get over en pointe. One of the most common reasons is achilles tendonitis. See what our solution is to help Megan get over on her pointe shoes.

Joyful Jordan I don’t think anyone would think that unless they had never seen a pointe shoe in their life. However, if you will allow me to play the devils advocate here it goes. As someone who has worked as a pointe shoe fitter for a tiny local dance store sometimes we don’t have a lot of options. For someone who has an injury or non ideal feet for pointe sometimes we have to go with the least of all the evils. If you live in a smaller town I definitely recommend going to your nearest “Big City” every few pairs of shoes so you can get refitted with all the options! 🤗

When I was 10 and got my first pair (yes I was strong, no my bones had not had a chance to ossify) our teacher measured our foot length and width, had us try this one random shoe and then decided what size from there and placed an order with Capizio. All 20 of us got the same make and model, none of us tried them on before buying. It was awful. I had constant blisters, lost toenails, and one epic dress rehearsal I bled through my shoe. It's no wonder I have so much damage and pain as an adult. At my next company I was told to go into the pro shop and pick out a pair that felt good. So I got a pair of Freed's that were mostly ok, but because my 4x wide foot is extremely compressible? I just sunk in and it only got worse as they were broken in, but I couldn't really afford another pair, so I just dealt. In college I went into the big city and to a certified fitting specialist. I got a pair of Bloch shoes that she promised I would love in a week....I hated those most. They were also too wide, too low profile, and the wings were useless in a matter of days, but I wore them for the entire semester. It wasn't until I needed a pair for one scene in a musical and I didn't want to spend a ton. I did a bunch of research, measured carefully, sent in a traced outline if my foot, and got a pair of $25 Fuzi shoes where I finally found my holy grail shoe. I'd wear them for 4 hour rehearsals, and they were so comfy they had me wear them for every scene..... I hadn't been in the studio in over a decade, and I didn't get a single blister. Part of the difference is finally knowing what I needed for my foot, but a lot of it is that technology has changed a TON since I got my first pair in 1991. My first teacher only allowed lambswool, or these shitty foam pads. In college I just used paper towels and duct tape. With my last pair I got spacers and gel pads. Night and day.

Dancers absolutely need to see a doctor to see if the tendonitis is not caused by some mechanical problem. I had a small bonespur on my heel that was directly responsible for creating a tendonitis condition and it took doctors over 30 years to discover! It took a Sports Doctor (rheumatologist) when tendonitis flared up on my right achilles tendon for no reason about 5 years ago to discover the source of the problem! The doctor told me, "I'm not surprised, you have a small bone spur that rubs the tendon!" I wish someone had figured this out back in the mid-1970's I might have been able to have a career in Dance, my career cut short because of this problem! And here I was a SAB student at the time!

I agree with this. A condition which is very common for ballet dancers is something called Os Trigonum which is the growth of a small accessory bone at the back of the ankle as a result of the repetitive load in the pointed position. That itself can cause discomfort as well as cause tendinitis or a tenosynovitis. Most commonly will need improvements to the mechanics around the ankle through exercises (Physiotherapy) and/or change in shoe.

Hi, please respond, I think I have a bone spur as well, causing tendinitis. I dance en pointe many hours a week and I'm very scared for the worst. Could you tell me how to fix it? I'm only fourteen and my career hasn't even started yet and I don't want it to end so soon.

I had this exact problem of not getting over the box due to the incorrect box shape. After 5 years in the wrong shoes, I spent hours at Gaynor in the NYC to get the correct shoes and I am now very happy with them so many thanks to their staff lol. I also witnessed two of my classmates having this problem. They are severely not over the box all the time and I don't even know how they possibly do double pirouettes in those horrendous shoes that seem to be gravely ill-fitted. One of them also appears to be sickling a lot. It was so bad that the back/inner side of the platform (that is closer to the bottom of the shoe) is severely more worn out than the top side of the platform all the time, and that's what's killing her shoes, not a dying shank, which never really dies because she is never correctly pushing down on the 3/4 point of the shank since she is so not over the box! I even noticed one day she got a brand new pair of shoes presumably having gone to the fitter again, and it was just as badly not over the box. Again, this is a relatively advanced dancer for an adult amateur since she can do double pirouette en pointe. I can't even imagine. All in all, I just want to thank you for posting this video. We really seem to need more good fitters. I was so painful in those old shoes and just wobbled a lot, and now I am having so much more fun en pointe than ever in those ill-fitted shoes. Please know that pointe shoe fitters make such a difference in a dancer's joy!!!!!! If you could, please make a video commenting on the latest popular Perfect Fit Pointe shoe insert. I see a lot of profs using them and would love to hear your take on it. Again many thanks for these great videos/instructions/comments!

I wish I had known this when I was younger. When I got my point shoes the fitting staff was not AT ALL as competent as you are. Just from watching your videos I now know that I got really ill-fitted shoes back then. I had such difficulties to get over en pointe, and the shoes were the main reason. Back then I only blamed my feet and kept stretching them for years because I thought they weren't flexible enough.... Eventually it was that that made me stop dancing altogether, even thought it was such a big passion of mine.

I’m really shy and I think I might have the wrong size pointe shoes. The girl who was fitting me kept asking if it felt “right” but I didn’t know what “right” was supposed to feel like, so after a while I just said it felt right and she gave me my pointe shoes and let me go. I can’t really get over the box when I’m standing in them the front feels like it smushing on my toes. And the sides also kinda smush my toes. I don’t know what to do cuz it’s my first pair and it was really expensive not to mention I’ve had the for only a bit and I don’t want to make my mom spend more money on a new pair.

My current shoes pull me back really far on my pinkie toe and even with the help of my teacher typing to put my foot in the right spot I can never get onto my big toe like I need to. The problem is definitely not helping my ankles as in the past I’ve had a major strain in the ligament in my ankle on both feet now. These shoes are decently new and I can’t get new shoes yet but I don’t know what to do about it in the mean time, or what to ask about in my next fitting.

I have a similar problem as Megan. My left ankle is weaker compared to my right because of two old injuries: I fractured my left ankle a long time ago and more recently, I had posterior tibial tendonitis on my left ankle. I also have less sensation in my left foot. I can feel if I'm flat on my box on my right side, but I can't tell if I'm on my box on my left side. If you look at my pointe shoes, you can see that the front part of the box is very clean compared to the back of the box. I wear Gaynor Mindens with the Featherflex shank (the second softest shank). They definitely work better than harder shanks that I've worn in the past, but still have difficulty getting over my box. Any suggestions?

Hi Josephine, I love your videos alot. I have a question. I'm also starting to have tendenitis and I'm still trying to get a good pair of pointe shoes for myself. I did an online fitting and I tried the grishko smart pointe (I have short and tapered toes, and wide metatarsal btw). But I can't really fully go up on pointe. I tried breaking the demi part of the shoe (if you know what I'm trying to say) cause they are a little hard for me and my feet and ankles are not that strong. But after I break them a lot, I think they are dying. My Achilles hurt too when I try to break them and when I do some rises. Do you have any advice?🙏🙏🙏

Hi Josephine. I was wondering if you could comment on what can cause serious big toe pain in pointe shoes. I've been afraid to do pointe as every pair I've had made my big toe hurt beyond words. I understand that there is some pressure to be had on the big toe, but this has gone beyond pressure. My current pair (Bloch B-Morph) had caused bruised toenails. Is it the shape of the box that needs fixing?

I don't know how useful this might be because it sounds like you've tried a lot of shoes but I was getting a ton of pressure through my big toenails and they were very bruised because I was sinking down into my box a bit, although otherwise my shoes fit quite well (they were also new so I didn't want to go and buy a new pair right away). I've started using toe spacers (the normal big spacer between my big toe and the 2nd toe on my left foot which was sinking more, and I double up on the spacers that are technically for between the 2nd and 3rd toes on my right foot to put between by big toe and my 2nd toe) and since then I've found pointe a lot more comfortable and my bruised toenails are starting to grow back healthier now. I tried it with both toe spacers in place (the larger and smaller going between my big toe and 2nd toe and then between 2nd toe and 3rd toe) and it was just way too much inside my shoe. I know that I just need to get better fitting shoes anyway but I'm reluctant to buy a new pair so close to getting this new pair and this is working as a quite good fix. But anyway, this might not be any use at all but I just thought it was worth suggesting in case it might help :)

For me, whenever I try on pointe shoes and they cause a lot of big toe pain, it’s usually because the shoes are too big or too wide which causes me to sink down into the shoes as all my weight are on my big toes (my big toes are the longest toes). You may need smaller or narrower shoes to hold you up. I would go get refitted by a professional fitter, properly fitted pointe shoes should not cause a lot of pain.

I was recommended to move to a softer shank (+low vamp) since I couldn't ever bend my old pair's shanks even once they died out (the boxes died, the shanks were almost brand new). I can bend my new shoes, but I still can't perfectly get all the platform on the floor, might I need more ankle flexibility? Maybe I need to dance more in a proper pair to get over my platform entirely? This is weird because otherwise it's a way better fit

Never had tendinitis, but my right foot is noticeably less flexible than my left, despite being a righty. My foot, ankle, and even knee is less flexible than their left counterpart

Just a random question, does rolling out your arches with a tennis ball really help arch pain?

Alignment, lack of wobbliness (totally not a technical term), balance, technique, bend of the foot etc etc etc :)

Big Al she probably won’t be en pointe for many years (unless she has danced previously), so she won’t have to worry about pointe shoes anytime soon.

I cant even imagine how bad her feet hurt bc being off your box hurts way worse than being on it does

The shoe looked a bit wide at the back, would you just handle that with elastic and the ribbon placement? The shoes she had before were clearly not right for her.

How old do you have to be to get pointe shoes my ballet teacher said 12...

Kawaii Inn it depends on the dancer and especially how strong your feet/legs are. At any age you will probably have to train your feet with elastic band and other supplies - but i'd say 12 is pretty spot on! You're technique will be good enough to handle going on pointe

Twelve is about when the bones in your feet become harder and less likely to become ruined from going en pointe. It also depends on your experience and your strength in your feet obviously

I bet those shoes were capezios.... I had donatellas for my first pair and they were absolutely horrid. Didn't help that my dance teacher made my class be fitted by her for our first pair and all she sells are capezio. Not saying capezio is bad for everyone, it may fit some people quite well, but most of the girls in my class had donatellas and they looked terrible on them and they couldn't dance properly. Not the skill level of the girls but the shoes. Now almost all of us have different brands; I have Gaynor Mindens, and everyone's arches and feet look fabulous!

Those shoes were so flat and tight to her feet, it almost looks like she's wearing soft ballet flats with ribbons. The first thing I noticed is how incredibly low profile they were. That doesn't seem like it would work for most people and I'm surprised they were in stock at a store. It seems like the type of shoe you order or keep around if you have a client with very shallow feet, but maybe that is just how they in comparison to her foot. I don't know.
