Poisoned Rook Trap - Evans Gambit

The Evan's Gambit is a favorite of many and for good reason. It aggressively attacks the center of the board and is filled with traps. In this variation, black attacks the white rook on a1 that looks free for the taking. This is a poisoned rook, and black will end up losing everything if they fall for this trap.

Thank Kevin for being more active on your channel. I learned chess from my dad before first grad. I was 11 in ‘72 Fischer vs. Spassky, followed the match through radio and played their games on newspaper the next day. In high school I was a big shot with a big head chess team leader but work and life put off my chess until two years ago when I retired. I’m back in chess heavily and follow your channel. Thanks for your time and your good material.

2:14 From what I know d5 there isn’t played very often. White is committing to d5 and giving up dark squares in the center. White usually plays Nc3 here, developing a piece. The most common trap is probably Nc3 Nf6 e5 dxe5 Ba3. There was even a Morphy game in the Nc3 Nf6 e5 dxe5 Ba3 line.

I'm currently learning Evan's Gambit, because it seems really solid and it makes the opponent play rather predictably no matter their rating. Plus, lichess stats show a ton of people who have fallen into the Evan's Gambit traps. I also find the Queen's Gambit rather appealing, however, I try to avoid the gambits which are extremely well-known because looking into the future, i'd have to learn to refute the refutations of the gambits and it seems like a pain playing against opponents who know how to play against a gambit perfectly.

After 3:10 ..Qxa1, Qd5 looks intuitively strong with the threat of Qxf7 and Qf8# next. If Qd5 is parried with Nf6/Qf6/Be3, can it be ignored since cxb7 and Queening next has even more threats. Thoughts?
@TheAnshuman1974
@TheAnshuman1974 2 жыл бұрын
After Qxa1, Qd5 is not a good move as it allows Qf6 protecting the f7 pawn. Alternatively, Be6 also protects effectively as cxb7 can be countered with Rb8. No queening in either case!

If it was white's move and they played e1 in that spot then yes it would definitely be a blunder. I was more stating that it's check right now and black's move. At some point white can get the rook involved in the game. Not necessarily saying that e1 right now is the optimal play.

My experience as a noob is that only noober people do the Be5 to counter the Italian?, I believe they call it? I mean Evan's gambit is removed as a possibility when I play with people about 1200 lichess score and above and that score corresponds to an even lower elo rating. But once black does that, Evan's will make them lose initiative and time no matter what they do, is also an experience.

1:02 isn't as bad as you make recapturing with the pawn seem. Instead interposing with Bd2 after Bb4+, White can play Kf1 and another set of mines have been laid for Black to navigate through.
@khen4966
@khen4966 2 жыл бұрын
How does it continue/go?
@SmilingIbis
@SmilingIbis 2 жыл бұрын
@@khen4966 How it often goes is they try to play d6, when you can play d5 (hitting the knight) and then Qa4+ wins the Bishop. Only thing to worry about then is if Black plays b6/a5 and then pops the B to a6 skewering the Q/K. You can get the R back into play either by f3/Kf2 OR the h4/Rh3 lift as needed. Give it a try, the worst case is if they retreat the B to b6 after Bc5. Then they are going for the "Normal Position" and best here is Bb2. Play it and see how it goes. But don't play it in blitz or bullet. Those things are too fast to plan or see anything.

5...Bc5 is in no way "the most common" move there. 5...Ba5 is the most popular followed by 5...Be7. 5...Bc5 is a distant third and seen extremely rarely at higher levels.

As I say in all Evans Gambit videos...THE EVANS GAMBIT SUCKS... DONT PLAY IT... Maybe its because Im highly rated... but why the hell would black play these terrible moves? even if you take the Bishop just move king to E7 after the queen check and you are up a ton of pieces... you should be able to get two rooks for your queen if they trap it next move... This video only shows what happens if you play the wrong line that only a dumb child would not calculate beforehand. This gambit stinks because good players will have the advantage 99% of the time... unlike the Queens gambit. These attacks are common attack patterns in the roy lopez and scholar's mate. Any player worth a grain of salt will be able to destroy the Evins Gambit as I have done with ease...
