Normally, franchise categories get ignored because the contestants are scholars, not TV junkies. Most times, the contestants have never seen the show/franchise/etc. Very evident in the Star Trek categories, where nobody would even try answering the questions even when anyone that's seen even a parody would be able to get at least one of them right.

I find it hilarious that they know the largest country that doesn’t touch the sea that was part of the Soviet Union, but not even the title character for anything besides maybe Pokemon.

@@coleallen8425 Yeah, Pythagoras was a philosopher from Greece who had moved to southeast Italy. He's known for his contributions to math, as in the Pythagorean theorem, but also for starting a math-cult, whose followers were notably forbidden from eating beans, which Pythagoras believed could be lethal. Presumably he also went fishing sometimes, as there were a number of lakes nearby. Besides the beans detail, where it's as far opposite as you can get, you're surprisingly spot-on. I was going to mention all this in the original comment, but it was all so close to the truth I thought you had intended it. Maybe it's some half-remembered thing your unconscious threw up? Anyway, you could actually find the answer to this question if you had a map of the area around Cumae, where he lived, at the time. Currently it's Lake Sant'Anna, I think, but it might've been different two thousand years ago.

It's funny because, just like the Tony Stark category they put up a clip from recently, the answers aren't even really related to the category. The only one here was the final one, which they didn't even get to. Remove the Pokemon element and the rest stay the same, and are super easy for anyone.

I can't believe that the last question was worth a thousand dollars. It's literally asking you "what is the protagonist of this very big anime that's been airing since the late 90s?" like they legitimately looked at this question and said "man, this is definitely the hardest thing we've got."

@Pentex Sucks You're both wrong. While used in English to refer to Japanese-styled animation, アニメ (anime) in Japanese refers to any kind of animation, including western cartoons. My wife is Japanese and calls Avatar, Spongebob, etc. anime just like she would call Naruto or Death Note anime.

While I appreciate my Millennial sensibilities being pandered to, these require almost no subject knowledge. You only needed to have known about the franchise for the unaired question about Ash and pikachu. The first one isn't even a question about Pokémon, second one anyone who wasn't under a rock in 2016 could answer ("Pokémon GO-to-the-polls" for proof even your grandma could answer), then three and four just define the word without the need for Poké knowledge. I bet none of these scrubs can even tell you what Pokémon is a portmanteau of.

There actually was a $500,000 clue back in 1999 where the contestant had to identify one of the four choices as not a Pokemon. The options were Pikachu, Squirtle, Frodo, and Jigglypuff. He walked away without guessing.
