As a judge I wouldnt allow her to continue if a doctor doesnt check her before. Health is way more important than performance. Head injuries can be fatal and there are times you dont see the damage right immediately. You can allow contestants to restart their rutine and discount all their previous faults.

I agree, if someone hits their head during a performance, they shouldn't be allowed to continue. The risk of a another fall is not worth further injury. Imagine if she had sustained even a small skull fracture or brain bleed continues to perform and ends up losing her balance hitting her head yet again causing severe trauma 😬 Time is of the essence when it comes to head trauma. That being said their performance was beautiful

I agree. This is such a dangerous sport. I started following figure skating in the 60s when the famous Soviet (Union) skaters Belousova and Protopopov were the best in the world. The difference in the level of danger between then and now is enormous. They were greatly adored around the world - and didn’t really take their lives in their hands every practice session or every performance. Perhaps we should consider initiating some safety guidelines. They’re trying to reduce traumatic brain injury in other sports.

priscilla crow i agree that her landings weren't perfect, but they were definitely not "horrible". In singles those would be weird, i agree, but in pairs, such landings are totally normal, except for the one were she fell, but the jump was right there, she just had a weird and silly fall.
@andreadeagon2301
@andreadeagon2301 5 жыл бұрын
priscilla crow Yeah, I remember someone commenting that a skater was wobbling on a spin when actually they were going to an inside edge. Watching skating only gets you so far. Sloppy is a loaded word, implying that the skater has bad technique. She does not have bad technique. Go look at the protocols and see how much the judges dinged her landings, and it doesn’t add up to much. Not horrible, and sloppy is the wrong word to describe the landings you object to. Wonky is the informal term :-). Shaky works, though only one or at most 2 is that. No deep outside edge would be another complaint for a couple. But horrible? Pejorative and vague isn’t a good look.
@andreadeagon2301
@andreadeagon2301 5 жыл бұрын
priscilla crow I agree, she was off her game. I think what I objected to was a tone I saw in your comment which was not what you meant, and is probably the internet communication problem. I admit I don’t like the term sloppy, as there are terms that are more specific to what happened and sound less judgmental. To me, sloppy refers to technique, whereas “she is off her game; she was already having a hard time maintaining her landing, holding her edge, etc., I would have understood your respectful position. Terminology, type, the internet. 😀

I was ice skating one time, and I’m horrible at it... I slipped and fell and the metal blade slit my lower leg, above the angle below the knee. It’s been a few months and it’s never gonna fade. It looks exactly the same as the day after the cut. It hurt so painfully. And I was just skating for fun and only go a few times a year. I wonder how athletes and ice skaters handle so many cuts like these for years practicing.

This whole "she's so strong for continuing" rhetoric I'm seeing in the comments completely disregards that being knocked out like that can be quite dangerous and someone should've stepped in for her own safety instead of letting her continue. Head injuries are no joke, and what happens after getting knocked out (preventing the head from moving and going to the hospital for observation and treatment vs. shaking it off and getting right back up) can have an impact on the severity of the damage from the concussion. So yeah it was brave and whatnot, but it was also very dangerous, even more dangerous than, say, continuing with a broken bone.

At that moment a lot of thoughts go through your head and I’m sure if it was up to him he wouldn’t have continued but she was “professional” about it and told him it was ok to keep going. So please don’t put the blame on him, you can tell that he was worried about her and obviously would’ve rather her not finish the performance and get some medical attention as soon as possible

He actually got her up. She was out cold and he moved her head n she woke. Then he helped her up. She was still clearly dazed when she began skating again. And to have a neck brace in the end shows she really did jam her neck in the fall. He should have let her lay there and call for help. That fall again near the end didn't help her neck any either......

In figure skating you cannot stop in the middle of a program or else you'll lose a good amount of points, if they had stopped to check for any bad injuries they would have had to probably forfeit. As an ex skater myself the biggest thing to do after having a fall or anything is to finish the program and that's what we are taught to do as skater from our coach. It may not sound right but that's the reality of figure skating.
@amyc5437
@amyc5437 5 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Clemente I think they meant that the skater should have stopped completely, doesn’t matter if you have to forfeit, safety in ANY sport is priority and she looked pretty dazed by the fall and she may even have lost consciousness for a second or two. Sure they may only get a handful of opportunities to skate at big comps but getting to the top or being the best is NEVER worth risking your safety after have a fall, especially when it is a serious head injury.

@@amyc5437but what I'm trying to say is that I know it was a bad fall we could all see, but as figure skaters we were always taught to finish the program. Yes it was a bad fall and yes she should seek medical attention but no one knows how much effort skaters put into the sport. Skaters have probably experienced worse in everyday training. It may not seem worth from an outside perspective but as a skater that's what we have to go through. Coaches have always taught us to finish the program. I remember my coach telling me that he doesn't care if I sprain my ankle or get a concussion in the middle of competition, just do your best and finish the skate which I agree for many reasons. It may not seem right but that's how much athletes want it. Plus they were already almost done the program with a really good skate besides that fall and a couple others.

@@gabrielj.clemente6240 are you sure that's not just your coach? From the way you talk about them, they sound a bit harsh. My coach always values my health and constantly checks if I'm okay even if I only tripped over my toe pick. But at the same time I can see the other point of yes generally we are trained to keep going and finish the program. We also don't know what was going on in her head but clearly she decided to keep going, the reason behind that we may never know.

Just a guess but I'm thinking there was something perhaps going on with her blood sugar. There are multiple moments before that fall where you can tell she is shaky and wobbly, especially in some landings. The women in pairs skating try to keep their weight under a certain number so that they can be lifted and tossed etc. It would not surprise me if that were a key factor and this incident, and that she didn't have sufficient fuel before going out onto the ice. My heart really went out to them watching this. You can see how concerned her partner is, and you can also see how determined she is to get through the routine. We ask a lot of athletes that represent us. Much respect to them!!

Perhaps they should have stopped but this means a lot to the skaters, if she didn't get up or was showing signs that she physically couldn't skate safely, they would have called it but you can see the partner asking if she was OK and she wanting to carry on, if he sensed that she couldn't do the lifts and jumps because she was too wobbly or not with it, he would have stopped but this is a long long time training and putting time and sweat into this that falling twice is bad enough, not finishing is like adding salt, so it's easy to see why they didn't automatically step in, I personally think they should have stepped in, but I also understand why they didn't.

She was off and it was clear from the start, you can see bad landings and trip ups a lot. Also ik that this is getting a lot of hate becuse thye didn’t stop, but that’s simply what they are trained to do. I don’t agree with it in this case, but that’s how this sport is.

Veronica Sendor I agree with you, in many performance sports we are taught that no matter if the stunt falls (in my case since I’m a competitive cheerleader) or if you get injured during the performance you have to keep going until the very end. You can see a moment of hesitation from the guy when he picked her up, a lot of people are saying he shouldn’t have grabbed her like that but I’m sure he was just as worried as anyone else and simply didn’t know what to do so just decided to play it off as “gracefully” as possible as if it was part of the performance all along. And I’m sure she told him to keep going because after all a lot of performers rather finish the performance and hold in the pain than get points deducted. Which I seriously do not recommend because it could be extremely dangerous (as seen in the video) but it’s the most “professional” thing to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes I noticed something was wrong with her from the start as well, a couple wobbles when landing and a fall before that. I think either she was tired, sick, or having problems with her skates.

Veronica Sendor exactly!!! I’m a majorette ( I do competitive baton ) and while competing I threw my baton too close and when I came up from my illusion I hit my face and sliced my nose from my glasses. There was quite a bit of blood but I still kept going or else in would’ve gotten disqualified and as a athlete or a performer you are always taught to finish no matter what. As much as it sucks, it happens all the time

People do not understand, how dangerous their sport is because it is also so beautiful. These athletes are strong Beyond mention. It's so heartbreaking to see such a strong athlete try to finish after a very bad injury had occurred. Bravo for their courage, their strength their artistic ability and their will to do what they needed to for their sport. I have not seen a follow up on MsCain, but there was a direct head blow. These are amazing athletes, but most importantly human beings. A C-spine injury is very, very serious.

Me that's why they don't have it. Your partner life should be put before any competition. He should have let her lay down and make sure she was really okay even if she was, then he would have still check but he only put her head up and unintentionally could have injured her even worst... This whole situation is just so wrong, I just think about the fact that human life is so fragile she was very lucky

Neï Tha she was the one that made him go on. He didn’t make her keep going. He shouldn’t have lifted her head but that was more of an impulse reaction to check if she was okay, rather than a “come on we gotta finish.”

I agree with everyone else. As soon as she fell, her coach should have been on the ice, and the music should have stopped. And her partner shoudn't have touched her. She landed on her neck, and was knocked unconscious. You would think there would be protocols about falls like this given the number of falls skaters have from lifts.

I don't understand why the partner shouldn't touch her? I'm pretty sure that everyone tries to wake up someone who is unconscious
@Prettyautumnrain
@Prettyautumnrain 5 жыл бұрын
L A rule you should always follow on sports; you NEVER touch a person that is unconscious, never try to lift their head or move their body because that can only bring more problems. Unless you are a person that knows how to deal with those situations, the best thing is to do nothing. It may sound silly to you, but a wrong move can kill a person or leave them with a problem for their whole life. Don’t forget that inside our head is our brain, in our neck there are very important veins... it’s very dangerous. NEVER move an unconscious person if they can be checked by an expert.
@Megailliterate
@Megailliterate 5 жыл бұрын
@@Prettyautumnrain didn't she stand up on her own? *well I watched it 3x now and I see what you mean. At first I thought he just tried to wake her up... I still dont think that he is the only one to blame. Even if he did touch her head/neck, she didnt stop the routine and no trainer or referee stopped it either. I do unterstand why the athletes didnt stop. A couple years ago I went skiing and broke my thumb. It didnt bother me until the next morning when I couldnt zip up my jeans. But what is a broken thumb compared to a spinal injury.

Are you a medical provider? If you watch the way she started to fall she would've landed on her back, not her neck. And do you understand the dynamics and forces it takes to brake the spine or neck? She might have had a worse concussion is all. The way she fell, the back of her head connected with the ice and he slowed her fall. You can only analyze what happened, you can't say that this or that would've happened because I've seen people take some serious falls or into situations that seemed like they were going to be really serious but the person walked away pretty much unharmed. And I've seen people get seriously injured by something that wouldn't seem that bad and might cause scrapes and bruises. She was dazed.

Deathbomb9 Its kinda common sence ;-; If you fall on your neck or back or even anything you can break it. Also yes the weight counts but you have to remember the weight from her and her partner. Having maybe 200 to 250 pounds around your neck or back is a possible crack or break of a bone! You don’t need doctor knowledge, you just have to have a brain :p
@camilaxoxo8625
@camilaxoxo8625 3 жыл бұрын
@@Deathbomb9 she would have landed on her neck and then back since it was head first. Either way, falling on your back can also paralyse you and there's no need to break your spine/ neck to get paralysed. Movement is controlled by a specific amount of parts of your spine among other things, and the littlest bump that harms them can paralyse you, whether it is just for a short time or for life. But what would I know, I have only been studying medicine for more than half of my life, dear me.
