The devs getting rid of Signal Beam still confuses me to this day. It was one of very few special attacking bug moves, had a decent base power, was the only bug type move that caused confusion, and provided both good coverage and stab to mons that needed it. It’s not like some of the other axed moves that were either extremely niche/situational or had very limited distribution, Signal Beam was on most fully evolved Pokémon.

This and the removal of other moves that were familiar to me back in Gen 4 days like Silver Wind, Spider Web, Feint Attack and Pursuit (just to name a few) suprised me when I found out in Gen 8. Most Bug Pokemon are already weak and when the Dark Type was introduced back in Gen 2, it had those gimmicky sinister moves that seemed weak at first but can cause some damage if you aren't prepared (e.g. Pursuit and Beat Up).
@Castersvarog
@Castersvarog Жыл бұрын
Plus it kind of just ruins midgame teams, there just isn’t any transition move between the weak Struggle bug and bug buzz anymore which would make using a special attacking bug type really suck until you get Bug buzz Plus there’s the coverage removal you mentioned, now almost all electric types just straight up have nothing but electric and normal type moves unless they terrastalize.
@shiftfire4511
@shiftfire4511 Жыл бұрын
I get removing stuff that's redunant or too specific, we had so many moves that were practically never used, but so many good moves got the axe as well... And there's a *painful* gap in SwSh's movesets for mid game, where you're mainly stuck with awful to middling moves unless you go out of your way to get the stronger end-game ones in the Wild Area.

I would argue Furfrou also falls into that category, but for a weird reason. Furfrou can change forms by getting groomed, essentially its other forms just being the Pokémon with a fancy haircut (fitting with X and Y’s theme of fashion). However, for some reason Gamefreak made it so that Furfrou reverts back to normal if it is put in the box or after two days pass. I believe this cumbersome mechanic has been the reason Furfrou has not shown up in a mainline game since X and Y, only showing up in Pokémon Go where the form change doesn’t expire (even when you transfer to Pokémon home).

6:57 While Metagross appreciated its Mega and Fairies in Gen 6, Gen 6 also made it so Steel doesn't resist Dark and Ghost anymore, and in turn, making it so Steel no longer cancels out 2 of Psychic's biggest weaknesses. This sped up regular Metagross's downfall even faster because not only did it have to be more fearful of fast Ghost and Dark sweepers, but it got much more vulnerable to priority moves such as Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch.

There's also a Pokémon I like which aged poorly : Machamp. The dude started being good in gen2 and is an OU mon in the gens 3 and 4, getting buffs after buffs : Gen 2 Special split buffs its Special Defense, Gen 3 gives it Guts, which makes burning it dangerous and Gen4 gives it No Guard which allows it to perform its famous Dynamic Punch sets. It was a serious threat back then but in Gen5, Conkledurr starts stealing its spotlight with its better bulk and offense along with the access of Drain Punch which allows it to use better its longevity. In Gen6 the Fairy type's introduction along with Assault Vest which gives Conkledurr a good enough Special bulk to completely outclass Machamp as a slow bulky Fighting type in OU Unlike Conkledurr, Machamp suffers from the lack of bulk, Drain Punch to have longevity and Mach Punch for STAB priority while the fighting type competition grows stronger each generation. We had to wait until PLA to see Machamp using those two moves for the first time (While Hariyama, its Hoenn cousin, also got robbed like Machamp and had to wait Scarlet and Violet to get Drain Punch). While it didn't end up as trash as some Mons in the video, Machamp is now a shadow of its former self. Edit : Okay so Machamp is bad in gen3 OU. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

Maybe you should do another video like this one of but unrelated to competitive, just, for example, for mons that lost the gimmick they were created for. The most obvious example of this is Chatot. Dynamaxed Hidden Power would probably have just become Max Strike, since that's how the Z move version worked (could only be used with Normalium Z to become Breakneck Blitz). I think the main reason it was removed is just because it made competitive building so much more of a pain. They've been moving toward making it easier to build competitive Pokemon in recent gens, with mints and egg move passing and removing the arbitrary limit on vitamin EVs. I think Hidden Power's typing being based on something you can't change was a little much, since in theory you should be able to turn your beloved in-game team into a competitively viable team (even if there are still some things in the game that still don't super work with that design philosophy, like Toxtricity's form and missed pre-evolution moves still being locked away forever, like Breloom's Spore if you evolved too early).

Gen 7 also added z moves that could ko Metagross very easily and metagross itself couldn't use it because it wanted its mega stone to be good in ou. And in gen 8 dmax made it even easier to beat Metagross although Metagross can use dmax effectively too. @@Castersvarog Many have suggested that. Double Iron Bash too. It needs a new physical psychic move since Zen Headbutt is only 90% accurate (or just make it 100%). Maybe the new move Psyshield Bash. It also needs a new hidden ability. But its typing is still bad these days.

Sceptile was made before the Phy/Spe split Thunder Punch, Crunch, and STAB Leaf Blade, as well as say HP Fire Now it's moveset consists of STAB Leaf Storm/Energy Ball, Focus Miss, Dragon Pulse and HP Fire, that last one of which would eventually be removed, literally nothing else after those 4 moves EDIT: it's physical movepool off of 85 Atk is much more appealing (STAB Leaf Blade, Rock Slide, Earthquake, Drain Punch, Thunder Punch, Crunch, Sword Dance, Dragon Dance)

Oh man, as an elder fan this whole video just kinda hurt my soul. I remember the glory days (or miserable ones because I never liked Talonflame) with basically all of these and have trained up versions of most. My roster of "competitive" mons reaches all the way back to my copy of Sapphire from 2002

The fact they are able to change a Pokémon's Ability between Generations really shows that they can easily buff or nerf a Pokémon for that alone. They should tweak Tinkaton's abilities and even her stats.

I was thinking to compensate for the loss of hidden power after this gen they keep tera types in not teraratilizing just tera types and tera blast and make some other moves that use either yours or your opponents tera type for attacking or even defending still thinking out how it would work

Many of the female Pokemon aged extremely poorly just like a Christmas Cake (after Christmas, it is useless) Latias went from OU in gen 3 to Untiered in gen 8. Chansey went from OU in gen 5 to PU in gen 9. Cresselia went from UU in gen 4 to untiered in gen 8-9. Zacian went from banned from Ubers to OU. Kangaskhan was Uber in Gens 6-7, but is now worse than most little cup Pokemon. Lunala is low tier Uber.

Since Jolteon is one of my top favorite pokemon and one I used ALL the time through many of the games up until recently as my main Electric Pokemon, I genuinely get angry at how badly they nerfed Jolteon in the last couple of games. I didn't even want to bench my Jolteon, but it just kept getting out classed by other mons.

Yeah, Talon’s fine now, though that’s from my VGC perspective as I believe it’s still not the best in singles. It has a niche and sticks to it, thing has seen a lot of tournament usage and has consistently seen good usage in ladder play. Honestly would say it’s just a healthier mon for the meta now.

I get that it's a thing to dump on Tom Brady but the dude was in the top 10 in almost every major statical category last year with a terrible O-line and revolving door at WR. Not to mention he was 45 and going through a divorce. He never fell off a cliff. There were still teams who were planning on pursuing him before he announced his retirement.

Tyranitar fell of really hard in just one generation. Tera doesn’t benefit Tyranitar since it likes staying a rock type for the Sp. def boost. Lots of new threats like Dondozo and Great Tusk making it weaker both offensively and defensively. The removal of pursuit also didn’t help but it still managed to hold on without it until this generation.
