Rules:
1. If a Pokemon faints it cannot be used again and must be permanently boxed.
2. I can only catch the first Pokemon encountered in each location.
3. No items in battle
4. No over-leveling
5. I must use the set battle-style
6. No gift Pokemon / Legendaries
7. I can only catch the first Pokemon encountered on each route.
- Except, no duplicate evolutionary lines - I can continue encountering until I find a Pokemon I haven't obtained yet.

I love Scott but his choices lately have been very... suspect. I was literally screaming at this video every time he wasn't at the level cap. So basically the entire half. Easily could have been deathless. But I guess for me the added challenge doesn't make the video more interesting. I personally would have loved to see Scott absolutely dominate a deathless run with ease. But that's just me. And his over lays are getting excessive. I barely look at them and when I do it's usually to see what the base stats are but they're not listed, just the dynamic in game stats. They kinda take some guess work out and, assuming he can see the dynamic stats, change the way he would play considering in game that information isn't available. And also why hack in rare candies if you aren't gonna even hit level caps lol

I don't understand how Scott made this mistake. He's done dozens of solo runs before and I swear he's mentioned it before, I know jrose has. Did he just completely forget about it? Is it possible he could have done this many runs and not known this extremely basic and well-known mechanic? He's pretty knowledgeable about the generation as a whole.

Scott, I have a bunch of feedback for you and hope it helps with future nuzlockes: 1. NEVER get cocky in a nuzlocke. Thinking you can take risks will cost lifes. Always go to at least near the level cap. 2. Never rely on inaccurate moves. In solo challenges you can reset until your strategy works, but in a nuzlocke it means death and unnecessary risks. Hypnosis, Sing and the likes are to be avoided. The lowest accuracy you should use is the 75% of sleep powder. Throw everything below that into the trash. 3. Play around the crit. Even your own. Lets face it: in this challenge you knew it was coming. I do like myself an interesting nuzlocke, but not at the cost of the mons. Losses caused by cockyness or poor preparation only stirr exasperation directed at the trainer in me. You can do better and - even more important - you can treat your pokemon better, since they are the reason why nuzlockes exist. Its not about "oh, these IVs are soo bad", its about "yeah, he is weak. But together, we WILL win this!" Love your team, scott. These specific mons only live once.
@Spudmay

Idk, the loss of a Mon and the struggle is more entertaining to me than a clean sweep. I get your opinions though. And this is a "competition" channel, so I understand wanting to strive for excellence in your approach, not a C tier run

@@Spudmay you get me wrong. I do not like when someone plays bad ON PURPOSE. It doesnt do the Pokemon justice. Not everything has to be a setup one shot sweep. Its about getting the most out of the pokemon you have. I would rather ban boxing pokemon to get another team (like he did with mankey) so he has to work with what he has right then and there.
@InfernosReaper
@InfernosReaper Жыл бұрын
@@grundgutigertv6170 That bit about banning boxing pokemon just seems kinda silly when you can only get 1 mon per area. Selection is already restricted enough. I 100 % understand your choose with the rare candies, but for me the training is probably the part where I'm losing the most Pokemons. Either because I get critted and OHKd by a stay Rattata or simply that I level up to few times because the training is a pain so I'm underleveled.
@HighPriestFuneral
@HighPriestFuneral Жыл бұрын
On top of that, economizing the training is, for me, part of the joy of Nuzlockes. Gen 1 is a broken mess and with a team of properly leveled (to reach the story trainer's Ace) the game isn't that much of a challenge. But choosing not to train and using the trainers and wild Pokemon you get along the way, is where the fun is for me and makes it into a grueling survival game at times.

Tbh in gen 1 games the Nidos kind of fall off. It's tough to waste your good TMs on them IMO. I don't wanna put my tbolt or Ice beam TMs on Nidoqueen/Nidoking when I could give them gyarados. I love gen 1, but unless you put some kind of rule/limit on encounters, it's hard for every run not to just turn into Kadabra + Gyarados + Snorlax vs The World, as all three are guaranteed encounters (kadabra from the game corner).

I really like that you don't calc every battle and didn't always go to the level cap. It feels like a lot of nuzlocke videos these days are more showing off solved puzzles than adventures. My favorite play throughs of Pokemon games are Marriland's Diamon playthrough from when that was new and he made it feel like an anime, slowly building an interesting team of six, and ProJared's FireRed nuzlocke where he hardly knew anything about the game, made goofy names and then made personalities based on those names.

I have thoughts for Scott! 1. You're right about the rules. There are a lot of differences between a true Nuzlocke and the "hardcore nuzlocke": a true nuzlocke starts at Power On and doesn't allow glitch candies, and you can't manipulate encounters because there's no duplicates clause. I think hardcore nuzlocke runs make better content. 2. You killed me when you taught nido body slam two levels before it learns it naturally 😂 I absolutely LOVE the raw Scott! Your recent stuff is so polished on the final playthrough, which I do love, but it's nice to get the mistakes that we all fell in love with. 3. Your proposed rules are fun! I can't wait. 4.Idea on rare candies: How about you can use them only four times all playthrough (but as many as you want at that time). So, prior to Brock, prior to Misty, after Erika, and before the penultimate rival battle, for instance. That eliminates most grinding but allows for some drama. 3.

One way I found to make HC nuzlockes more fun is no training on wild Pokémon. Makes you have to decide which Pokémon are worth leveling in battle, growth rate, and when to battle trainers / save for leveling on later. Also when you get to the e4, you definitely won’t be able to have 6 Pokémon who are leveled enough. Fun option

Not playing to the level cap really costs lives in nuzlockes, especially if you plan on doing later generations. Instead of a Dragon type monolocke, you can choose to go for a Dragon egg group instead? It'd give you a bit more variety to choose from and you could form a team out of it (Charizard, Arbok, Gyarados, Seadra and Dragonite... No Aerodactyl since it belongs to the Flying egg group).

Personal preference, but I've always thought level capping to the gym leader's ace is too easy. Afterall, as players we get to have both a full team and type advantage. When I'm trying to challenge myself, I instead prefer to set a soft level cap based on the gym leader's lowest level Pokémon. I say soft cap because my rule is only that I'm limited to that level when entering the gym. Any levels I gain while fight in the gym are fair game.

Hey Scott, nice to see your version of a hardcore nuzlocke, even if this is still the very beginning. What I enjoy most about this kind of challenge is the player creating a tactic around what pokemon they have available any executing that efficiently. So to be honest seeing you getting punished for not leveling up to the cap and then having to rely on inconsistent sleep tactics to brute force through felt like you deserved it. x) I'm looking forward to your mono-type hardcore nuzlocke runs. Mono-type runs are my favorite way to casually play through older games, so it would be nice to see content like that!

I think when it comes to the rules section, you should include the additional rules you’re using as well like Species Clause and Unlimited Rare Candies. I do like even with unlimited Rare Candies, you still wanted to make it a challenge at certain points by not being at the level cap. If you’re going to try to be at the level caps at future runs, I recommend checking learnsets of mons particularly level-up sets since that can help you with giving mons their best sets or making sure to keep a mon unevolved to get a powerful move faster. Speaking of moves, I think it’s also important for to try and save your best moves until it’s Elite 4 or at an important battle since you don’t want to risk losing it to a death. I see that you didn’t use gift mons or in-game trade mons, but I think they’re fine as long as they’re counted as an encounter in the area. All in all, I can’t wait to see what this Nuzlocke series is going to be like in future videos.

I think you're overthinking the backend stuff too much. The stats and stuff is nice and really helpful with the solo runs since they are supposed to show the best possible outcomes. I dont think it's nearly as important for nuzlockes however and they might even be more interesting in a more raw format. I think maybe you should try a later generation nuzlocke without all the bells and whistles and see how people receive it.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon - Definitely a minority then! I’m not sure why it bothers some people so much, yes you miss out the potential of being ko’d by random wild Pokémon but you lose out on that stat gain that battling gives you instead of rare candies so the gym battles and elite 4 are harder as you lose out on the boosts by using them! Here's an idea for future nuzlocks: When I play pokemon i generally do what I call "no-grind" runs, basically I don't allow myself to gain any exp () from limiteless sources (so no rebatteling trainers or knocking out wild encounters, also no daycare or limitless rare candy). [I also play on set mode without items and have an unwritten rule to use a "sensible number of pokemon" for the part of the game I'm in, so no concentrating all the exp into 2-3 mons] I did do a no-grind nuzlock in pokemon x/y and in oras. It plays quite differently form a hardcore nuzlock: 1st loosing a pokemon is even more devestating because you also loos all the exp you invested in that pokemon 2nd you basically never train more than 6 pokemon unless you loose one and have to replace it 3rd It might sometimes be necessary to use a pokemon in battles even if its not optimal because you need it to gain exp for a later challenge 4rd the optimal strat is to battle every trainer, so it ends up being more time consuming than if you use rare candy but less timeconsuming than a hardcore nuzlock without rare candy. disclaimer: I never played the original gen 1 games so I have no idea how hard or eazy that would be.

Stone evolutions unfortunately do not have level up moves any longer and Razor leaf is one of the best grass moves in gen 1. Another reason i say this is because you could give Mega drain to a different pokemon to improve your type coverage overall. Also id have switch trained abra and let it learn psychic naturally, then give the psychic tm to maybe Butterfree. But to each his/her own lol. Great video and good luck in future nuzlockes.

So interesting fact about Pokemon Generation 1 games. The Opponent does not select their move at the same time as you do as in all later generations. Instead, they choose their move, when its their turn to act in the speed order. This means if you Swap out, they will act. This is also interesting in the case of pokemon who's only psychich type move is Hypnosis. The AI knows not to use Hypnosis vs a sleeping pokemon. However it will prioritize using hypnosis for super effective pokemon. As such, if you had a poison type out, and used the Pokeflute every turn while being faster than the hypnosis user, you wake your pokemon up, it now decides since your awake, and hypnosis is super effective, to spam hypnosis. As such, when you were versing Vaporeon in the champion battle, when you swapped your Poliwhirl out, it acted before the rival, so when Haunter hit the field, it then chose its move based on haunter being on the field. TL;DR, the AI cheats.

Just a few tips: 1) repel strategies can be used to help select specific pokemon in conjunction with dupe clause. 2) game corner Pokemon 3) Kanto starters? You could have added them. Fishing spots in towns can give you a Magikarp (old rod) or Krabby/Poliwag/Goldeen (good/super rod). 4) having your pokemon at level cap will allow them to level up during a gym battle giving you a slight edge. 5) sacrificial pokemon can help keep you in the battle. Especially if you have pokemon that share the same function. 6) tbh I would ban set up moves and status effects. Especially in gen one. 7) for the E4, your level cap can be Lorelei's highest level Pokemon. Once you start the E4, you can go past that level. 8) substitute and mimic are great additions. 9) Hitmonlee baby. Let's go. 10) you can restrict stone evolutions until certain checkpoints. Say - Nidoqueen can't stone evolve until > 4th gym. 11) if gen 1 is still too easy, do it deathless. A single death = reset.

Thank you so much scott! I havent been able to watch a nuzlocke like this in a long time...where pidgeys are flying normal type...or where electric is super effective vs flying types. Or where pikachu has its normal base stats. Im not evem kidding. Poketubers nowadays mess with so much of the game its barely a pokemon game anymore with extreme randomizers.

That was an intense nuzlocke! I actually enjoyed the nostalgia of yellow version. I think it would be fun to have a run dedicated to avoiding sleep/status/setup moves. I actually likes the hypnosis

Great to see a new scottlocke. These games might be getting too easy for you! Game knowledge is the best nuzlocke skill you can have and you got it down to a science. Wish people would do more gen 1 nuzlockes, these games are just so charming and nostalgic.

20/10 chefs kiss. I see you’re preparing for your Vs nuzlocke against SilphSpectre 😜 Edit: can we talk about Scott’s software honesty being a game changer for these games period? Like the detail to seeing the enemies Pokémon and their moves and stats, to seeing his Pokémon’s moves and stats. This is all beautiful information and seeing it for a nuzlocke is beyond helpful I’m sure.

an important part of the nuzlocke format, that is often forgotten, is an engaging and investing story created by the higher stakes, and by allowing yourself and us to get attached to each pokemon, since they are carefully nicknamed and could be permanently 'gone'. so just chucking in your pokes underlevelled for a bit more 'challenge' and losing them because of this, sort of tells a bad story and arguably misses the point of what can potentially make nuzlocking more interesting than just another challenge run. i think what we want to see is you giving it the best shot possible to get all your little guys through this very challenging way of playing pokemon. and while ultimately it may not challenging to defeat each game under hardcore nuzlocke rules (heavily depending on what game you are playing and what pokes you get of course), but certainly challenging in the sense of getting into the mindset of not wanting to lose any of your team at all (unless you *absolutely* have to).

Really like the Nuzlocke. The addition of the DVs in the overlay is great. It's also pretty interesting to see how you learn new things that aren't important in solo challenges. Like the AI chooses a move after yours including a switch (which obv. don't happen in a solo challenge). So Koga's good AI would've always gone for the Bug-Move against Kadabra after your switch.^^ I agree that you should ban sleep for the Nuzlockes because it's too strong. On the other hand it nerves grass type a lot. Also it would be possible to ban all boosting moves, because... yeah they are even stronger. But I don't know, if I would do it. They are just so much fun in Gen 1.^^

I like solo challenges, but I actually like nuzlockes better so I’m quite happy to see this! Same with when Jrose did some nuzlockes. Every nuzlocke video on KZfaq seems to be a monotype run, never just a regular one! I like the regular ones like this.

Scott: "I might ban sleep moves..." Audience: BASED Scott: "No rare candies before elite 4 and champion even though I've lost most of my team..." Audience: Also... BASED Also I don't know if you know this about the gen 1 AI, but the AI makes its move choices retroactively to the player. Thats why Blue's Vaporeon chose Hydro Pump instead of Quick Attack against Haunter. The AI saw that quick attack didn't effect the ghost type and went for its highest damaging move instead.

Water type Pokemon and Ice type moves are really good in Gen 1. Water is probably the 3rd or 4th best type in Gen 1 and Ice is one of the best attacking types in Gen 1.

Here is a rule suggestion for rare candy use: only use them to get to 1 level under the cap (or set cap to opponent's 2nd highest level) and only right before the battling leader/rival. Newly caught pokemon can be immediately leveled to the previous cap. This might make the trainers between gyms at least a little more interesting. Also what ive seen other nuzlocks do for elite 4 is set cap to lance's ace (before battling Lorelei) and level naturally before champ.
