I like the "Overbuilt Bucklers" for building shields. Buying good Shield Bosses is surprisingly difficult, and I've seen salad bowls! Ironically, a lot of reproduction Bucklers are either hydraulically formed bubbles, which are too thin, or over-built to shield boss weight. Which makes them pretty ideal for shield bosses, they already have rivet-holes for the grip split, you just have to screw the ends into the shield itself. (Yes, I use modern wood-working screws, because they're easy to replace. I'm going for Beaters here, not Historical Accuracy.)

I wouldn't be surprised if shield bosses were heavier because Center grip shield were more military items than bucklers were. Being to withstand a polearm, calvary sword strike, battle axe is more rigorous than civilian fencing punishment.

@@PJDAltamirus0425 You also have to support the weight of the shield.

Good to know! I picked up a 12” buckler on Amazon and immediately gave up on sword and buckler. Thinking: why bother with something so heavy...

I love poker. Their production quality for the price is stunning. I have one of their revised Matthaus Messers and it is easily my favorite piece of HEMA Gear

I'd like to see bucklers with a 16ga boss and 18ga rolled rim. I reckon that would be perfect for me.

I have one like that. It handles amazingly, but it gets beaten up really badly. Have to stand on it to straigten it out every session and it always looks battered. Heat treatment might help, but I suspect that thin it might encourage cracking as mine gets really bad crease lines around the boss rim.

Remember a place that sold bucklers called Shields Plus? Seems like they had some nice ones. Are they still around?

We bought shields and bucklers from them years ago, but unfortunately about 6-7 years ago they stopped putting rawhide on the edging of their wood shields/bucklers, and this was a problem. They swapped to leather and durability was shot as a result. All of the last batch of bucklers we had from them had a short life, whereas I still have a Viking shield and heater of their older batches from about 12-14 years ago.

@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing , Oh ok, I was wondering. Thanks for the reply, Nick! I also left a comment/question on your earlier spadroon video.😁

Any update on this buckler's durability since you had a chance to test it in sparring?
