I've actually been to a "surströmmingssalteri", which is where they make surströmming. My parents knew the boss of the factory and we had the *absolute pleasure* of visiting. He gave me a can of it to take home, but when we opened it, it was full of sweets instead, and honestly thank God.

I loved the international hot sauce poker face video because that video truly showcases the vocal range Ebbers has 😂😂 he’s notoriously known for having a dislike for spice in general, but as the rounds went on, his voice got higher and higher, sounding prepubescent again and the best thing was he struggled with round two, so knowing he had two more rounds which were even spicier meant we’d see him struggle through even worse challenges 😂

I love both natto and century eggs, but having had them since childhood definitely helps. Having more soy sauce, wasabi and rice with the natto softens the blow for the uninitiated. For the century eggs, you shouldn't really have them alone. They're best in a pork and century egg congee as mentioned (Hong Kong style). I also really love them paired with chilled silky tofu in soy sauce and topped with green onions. I've also had my share of stinky foods (stinky tofu, very fishy fish), but even then I'm not sure about surstromming.

I discovered natto only 2 years ago and century eggs too. I love both and I didn’t grow up with them (European). Honestly I think that people are overreacting and I don’t understand why. Both are really nice. On its own natto is delicious, subtle, but a bit of mustard and soy sauce takes it to another level. Century egg is nice on its own too, but I do prefer to eat it with a little bit of garlic / chilli / soy.

I bought some natto to see if it was that horrible because they tend to be such wimps with spice that I thought maybe they were overreacting to that too....and I wouldn't say I loved it, unfortunately. Haven't been brave enough to try century eggs yet but I do eat the Last Dab hot sauce for genuine enjoyment so at least I'm mildly adventurous

Mike gets through all the rounds by digging right down to his core, summoning every ounce of rage and disgust in his body, turning it into spoken words with an underlying passive aggressive tone and by doing that he keeps his face calm and composed to keep the bluff going 😂😂 it’s actually quite scary but funny watching him suffer a disgusting food and becoming sinisterly passive aggressive yet remaining cool and calm

As an adult, I still can’t eat a Wilson’s toffee inconspicuously, they’re just too big for that. Even with growing up with it it is still to this day just a lot

So, about ten years ago I was a exchange student in Sweden and we had a celebratory lunch with the people who funded the trip. The smell hit us on the corridor, they were going to serve the beautiful delicacy of Surströmming. So there I sat in between men in their 70’s trying to have nice small talk in a foreign language and trying to decide whether the taste or the smell was the lesser of two evils. I survived and probably didn’t insult our hosts that bad, but I have to say it was the most awful food experience I’ve ever had and it almost ruined all fish for me. So if you ever get the chance to try it, I couldn’t recommend it more.

Fun fact: in Sweden people are crazy about surströmming! Some people even start salivating just from the smell. If you store the can an extra year the taste mellows out. You skin it, gut it and take small pieces on flatbread with onions, butter and boiled potatoes. Takes a while to get used to but try it with regular herring and you will notice a clear taste difference. It pretty much anchovies times two and the sour notes from kimchi times five.

I know in the video they said that century eggs are usually added to a dish as an accent to bring out the flavour, but if you mix a bit of vinegar into some sugar and put it on the century eggs it actually tastes pretty nice! (An alternative is adding a slice of pickled ginger on top of it and eating it together 😆)

@ceciljess1078 3 жыл бұрын
@@Annalovesautumn I think that the flavor is pretty mild, just kind of herbal. I think it’s the texture that might be more aversive to people. Or the color could be a bit…new. The outside is jelly, the inside can be runny and green or more solid. They’re just kind of salty. I love them, always have. My dad ate them when I was a kid, and the first time I wanted to try and he let me, I liked them. I love Sorted and have been watching them for years, but the reactions here were so extreme for a truly very gentle food. I highly recommend you try them and keep an open mind. Start with half of one! They’re pretty cheap and at every asian food store.

Honestly, as someone who actually enjoys belachan, natto and century egg... I feel you pain. Straight doses are crazy. Oh, for the century egg, if it's a side dish and not part of the congee, we usually eat it with slices of preserved ginger. Yep that helps A LOT.
