That is one of the best and most succinct poker videos I have ever seen.

10 to 1 is a better ratio than 15 or 20 to 1 because 1) set over set (1%) 2) full house vs villains turned set on turn or river (4%). In some case you raise in set mining so that an all in gets the required return. This raise pot set mining has the advantage than on a Ace high flop (22%) with a c-bet you can fold villain equality than have not hit well.

If you're set mining, you also have to play the board. You need to know what types of flops miss the preflop aggressor's range and hit your range. And you need to bluff some of those flops. Of course, when your call brings more people into the pot, you need to rethink bluffing. If you set mine and only one other person sees the flop, you have to be willing to bluff when the board hits your range. If you set mine and your call brings two other callers into the pot, you don't want to be bluffing into three other people with a low pocket pair.

I only set mine with aces or kings.

I only raise preflop with AA and need another ace on the flop to continue. Otherwise i muck.

Yeah. Not a bad strategy against these internet kids. If I get a backdoor straight flush draw with the set, I might check. Trappy trappy.

I play AA+ in position. Out of position I play only +

Seems like you're looking at this in set mining isolation. 44 vs AK off is 53% fav. You're never a huge dog to a flushing or a straighten board. A paired board is gin. There are so many outs and bluff outs that need be considered. The math problem you've shown in this video is a bit simplistic.

Yes, but that's exactly how many rec players treat small pocket pairs when playing low stakes.

But that's why it's called "poker science", just taking in the basic science/math behind simple poker.

Completely agree with jballoregon, The "professor" (LOL) is only considering the odds of flopping the set. Odds of hitting set by river are about 1 in 5 chance. Also odds of your opponent hitting a pair on the flop is only about 1 in 3. I can't believe 80 people liked this video while only one person disliked it at the time of this post. The professors analysis of 1 in 15 to 1 in 20 is insane.

John O'Connor - yep he ignored a lot of other factors . But really the point is not to be optimistic about set mining. When you set mine you assume the other person has over pair other wise it’s not really set mining since a pair vs AK is still favorite on the flop. Also if you consider all 5 community cards then the cost goes up as your percentage goes up. Still very bad odd for a small pair. These vids are too short to shows everything. A smart person will further conduct his own investigation on how to best play a hand in many situations. No free coaching or article will teach you entirely. I have a few secrets of my own with poker strategies, discovered here and there but not by any poker coach. If they know it, wouldn’t it be wise to keep to themselves!

i don't get this math at all, because most time you make a set you are not getting 15x your money out of the pot. the vast majority of the time you'll fold out your opponents at some point in the hand. if that's so, then you should simply never set mine? just don't play low pairs, ever? that can't be right, either. if they go all in, or call your all in the likelyhood that you win just went way way down, too.

John S, imo your right. Deep stacks are needed.

John S - bingo! Small pairs go in the muck 80-90% of the time! Not spare a single dime. I’ll be happy to see flop on SB or BB and occasionally button for cheap. Thank you! That said, how you play small pairs 10-20% of the time is one secret of poker I have not heard! Good luck discovering it. Remember the three rules of Fight Club!

If you're playing in a cash game and you are 100BB+ or at the start of a tournament where you can be 300BB+, that's a good time to set mine because it is definitely possible to get 15X you're money
