As a Brit, the idea that an electric kettle is some sort of rare commodity is bizarre lol
@KingBuster902 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is the first electric kettle was invented in Chicago 1891 but at the same time a Brit was inventing 1 which is the more like the version we use today & the americans just copied the British design

'And now we have electric kettles you can plug in. I used one once in an office I think'. As a Brit that cracked me up because if I haven't used a kettle at least 5 times a day both at home and at work I must be having a really bad day!

@@ToddReacts It must be our obsession with tea and also instant coffee (which is vile) that makes this sound funny. It's been so long since people used a kettle on the stove in the UK that if an electric one breaks, people wonder how the hell they can boil water.

Made me genuinely laugh out loud as well! My girl's American and it took me a while to discover electric kettle's aren't common place there; I was rather stunned. I refuse to boil water on the hob now as it takes me back to when the electric had run out and I'd spend days boiling water on the hob for tea and to wash while waiting for my wages to drop, never again 😂

It was so strange to hear you talking as though an electric kettle is a novelty, and saying you used one once! it would sound so funny to British people who've mostly use them multiple times a day for our whole lives 😃 good video. Stephen Fry is great 👏🏻

See, in the UK, public schools are private schools. The poshest, most upper class private schools are referred to as 'public schools'. What you call public schools we would call state schools. And in answer to your question I was in a pretty standard state school. We had a school uniform but it was fairly basic. Most state school have uniforms once you get to secondary school age (11) . When I was a kid it was very unusual for primary school children (4-10) to wear uniforms, it was just secondary school that had them. These days I see a lot more primary schools with uniforms.

@@ToddReacts It's designed to do several things - to level the playing field - no-one is coming to school in designer gear while another child is wearing a bin-bag; it also takes the thinking out of what to wear each day so life is easier for the parents; and it's also about a shared identity and adherence to standards or rules. That's the idea anyway. I'm sure there are some other purposes behind it that I've missed as well!

QI is well worth a look. There is an in-depth interview with Stephen by Mark Lawson that goes into his childhood, his struggles with depression. QI, as you've noticed, has been running for many years, various personalities have taken part, the regular being Alan Davies who you saw throughout this video. Stephen has since vacated the chair, to be replaced by Sandi Toksvig. The scoring system on QI is a law unto itself.

Stephen made a two part documentary on manic depression himself. While he obviously framed it with himself as an example, he interviewed lots of other people about it, too, both experts, and other people with bipolar disorder. But I remember in particular that he talked with Griff Rhys-Jones about a party, where Stephen had been really down and considering suicide. Did Griff notice anything? "No, I thought you acted like you always do, chatting away with witty banter." Which really goes to show how people with severe depression still have a way to hide it inside themselves. There was one Facebook friend of mine who took his own life. I didn't really know him, so I have no idea what might have been going on in his mind, but I did look at his last messages to see if there was anything I could have noticed. I can't say that there was. He was a movie critic, and some months earlier he'd severely trashed a movie that resulted in several angry responses from fans. I remember one to whom he just said: "Let's just agree to disagree, OK?" The outraged fan said "I hope you die." I can't believe that this stupid comment from a stranger could have affected anything, but I wish I could have seen the offending review. The movie in question was certainly no masterpiece, but I didn't think it deserved a bottom score. I kinda wonder if his depression might have expressed itself there.

Yes, we have fast electric kettles here in Britain. If you thought a kettle in the US was fast then you've not seen how fast ours are. We use 240V in UK. US is 120V. That means we can boil water twice as fast as you guys. There are some electric kettles that will boil water for a single cup of coffee and it takes less than 10 seconds. We also have super fast toasters too. I can wake up, turn on the kettle and toaster, go for me morning pee, and go back to find hot toast and a hot drink.

QI was, for many ears, one of the funniest things on television, mostly because Stephen fry was the QI Master, but also because of his verbal battles with his constant right-hand man, Alan Davies. I strongly recommend you watch more of the QI clips (with Stephen, not Sandi, as host. Nothing against Sandi, but Stepehn ran that show for 13 years, he's the best!), especially the Blue Whale Gag (series A-N) or QI Compilation Alan vs the moon(s).

At my Secondary School, ages 11 to 16, we wore a uniform. It was a very strict school and the uniform rules were very strict, also. I'd find little loop holes in the rules just to annoy the teachers. For Example You could only wear dark brown or black shoes. I wore a pair of black leather trainers, with fluro colour pink laces. The sales receipt said "Black leather shoes" and nothing in the rules said I could not have pink laces.

all schools in australia bar a few alternative schools have a uniform, public or private. i've been to both but fuck me they made BANK from us at my private school 80AUD for a dress (around 60USD) that we wore in summer and then we wore a shirt and skirt in winter with tights and a jumper. and once we were in year 10 we wore blazers, plus school hats, school socks, school backpacks. it was A Lot. while my public schools had uniforms they were often a polo shirt and bottoms ranging from pants, shorts, winter pants, skorts and skirts. (there girls could choose to wear any one they liked which only became a thing at my private school in 2018 i think? well after i graduated) also when u were like. Tiny. some schools in lower income areas just let you to wear the school colours rather than the uniform.

QI is not really a quiz show. It's a panel show, an entire genre with which Americans are mostly these days unfamiliar. Basically, the structure of the show exists mostly as a scaffolding on which to hang banter. Other notable panel shows include Would I Lie To You?, The Unbelievable Truth, Just a Minute, Eight Out of Ten Cats, Eight Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown, The News Quiz, Mock the Week, and Have I Got News for You? Some of these are on the radio. From The Technical Difficulties team on KZfaq, there's Citation Needed and Two of These People Are Lying. And from Tom Scott also on KZfaq is the one-shot Questionable.
