There are many things to love here, but mainly it's about the atmosphere, paying respect and tribute to history but also opening itself to change and various ideas. What you say is correct. It must still progress a lot in some fields, and particularly in pollution : that is very correct. My point of view is based on its evolution during the last 2 (or 3) décades. And, from this point of view, I'm convinced that you'll hardly find other cities in Europe which had such a developement ! The pb to start the metro belongs to the past. Currently the 3rd line is on the way. Before 2012 : no bicycles in Warsaw. Now, Veturilo has a huge success. But, as I say, many progresses must still be done (too much car traffic, coal heating, what is an outdated system and creates air pollution, etc etc). In spite of all those negative points, believe me : Warsaw is just a fascinating City for many reasons (historical, mix of architecture styles which makes its specificity), evolution like no other City currently, rehabilitation of Vistula river, amazing, enhancement of real estate, etc etc). In spite of your (right) comment : be proud of your City, believe me !

and : the new generation is more sensible to environment; a huge demo will take place on friday, take part to it ! may be you should candidate as a leader of the green party, which is still too weak in Poland. My cousin remembers her childhood in Kielce (280 km on the south from Warsaw) with the main street (one of the longest in Europe) full of these fantastic, well designed neons on every building with cafe, bookshop, shop with shoes or clothes etc. The street, going up and down (Kielce are in mountains) was just magic. That was in 1960s and 1970s.- and there is a film on KZfaq made at that time by somebody, showing it a little.

In fact on the German side there was significant number of other nationalities assembled on the territory of USSR however they were obviously subject to the control of the German war machine. Hey Maciej. I made a distinction of who destroyed Warsaw between the group of political individuals and a country. It was the Nazi Germany responsible for this and not the Nazis. To a foreign person not familiar with WWII, Nazis could be understood as Poles. Kind like today we have political groups within the European Union that have alliances across the national; borders with their representatives in Brussels. Furthermore, we do not say that Irak or Afghanistan were the Republican wars or that the Republicans came or occupied or destroyed Baghdad. We call them American wars and it was the Americans that did them not the Republicans. The republicans were in charge had the majority but just as in the Nazi Germany there were other parties that also at least partially supported this.

Od trzydziestu lat wciąż się rozwija i jakos sie nie zmęczyło. Podobny rozkwit Waszawa przezywała w 14 w., potem w drugiej połowie 16 w. i na poczatku 17 w., w 18 w. (to był rozwój na miare dzisiejszych czasów) , w latach 1816-1914 (faktycznie była najładnejszym i najbardziej rozwinietym miastem Imperium Rosyjskiego, nawet jesli Rosjanie ja przesladowali i specjalnymi dekretami zabronili jej po Powstaniu Styczniowym rozrastać się wszerz). Potem nastapił wręcz niebywały rozkwit - w latach 1918-1939. Do tego trzeba doliczyć odtworzenie Starówki i wielu innych ulic w latach 1949-1954 oraz świetna architekture modernistyczną z lat 1956-1970. Chyba tylko wojny i napasci z zewnątrz sa w stanie Warszawie przeszkodzić.
